Lacey was full of excitement when got out of Jim’s car and walked towards the café, she couldn’t wait to see her friends again and catch up on all the gossip.

When she opened the door, Alison was the first to notice her. “Lacey!” She screamed, running across the cafe and threw her arms around her. They both hugged each other and began to cry. “Where have you been?” She sniffled. “There were people here looking for you a few weeks ago, are you in trouble?”

Lacey laughed. “No I’m not in trouble, they were just making sure I was safe.”

“You do know it was.” Alison paused and looked out of the door as if she was scared to say Evans name too loud. “Evan Durber.” She whispered. “He was looking for you?”

Lacey told her friend to sit down, she bought her a coffee then told her what had happened since she left. While Lacey spoke, some of her other friends gathered around the table to listen and were shocked with what she had told them.

“Holy shit, you’re having Evan Durber’s baby and going to marry him!” Alison cried. “So why are you slumming it in here with us now?” She nudged Lacey and laughed.

Lacey sighed. “Because I’ve missed you all, we’ve been through so much together. I’m not going to forget where I came from and I’m craving one of Margret’s breakfasts.”

“Me and Sam are having a baby too.” Alison rubbed her stomach. “I’m three months.”

Lacey was shocked. “Oh my god and you are still living on the street!”

Alison nodded. “There’s no spaces in any of the hostels, we have asked for help but there’s none out there for us as a couple.” Tears welled in her eyes. “I’ve been told that maybe I can go into a mother and baby unit but that will be miles away and Sam can’t join me.” She jumped up off her chair and headed for the door. “I’ve just thought if Sam misses seeing you he won’t be happy with me.” She ran out of the café to look for him.

Lacey followed her outside and watched her disappear into the crowd of people in the open-air market and went to ask Jim for enough money to buy her and her friends something to eat. Jim gave her fifty pounds which was more than enough and told her to let Margret to keep the change so it would cover the cost of Alison and Sam’s meals for the next couple of days.

When Lacey tucked into her breakfast, she couldn’t help but think, that compared to all the fantastic food that she had eaten since she lived with Evan, Margret’s breakfast was still the best.

Margret sat talking to Lacey for a while telling her that she was trying to sell the café because she was moving to Ireland to live with her daughter who had serious health problems.

Lacey was heartbroken. “When are you leaving?”

“The end of the month.” Margret answered with tears in her eyes. “I feel so guilty, I’m hoping to find a buyer before I leave, if I don’t, where will everyone go to eat, they’re not allowed in the city?” She wiped a tear from her eye. “But I have to go because my daughter needs me.”

Lacey hugged Margret. “I’m sure they will understand.”

“I know; they have all been so nice to me about it.” Margret sighed as she walked away to serve a customer.

Lacey stayed in the café for the next three hours spending time with her friends, catching up on all the gossip. Alison eventually came back with Sam, he hugged Lacey that tight she thought she was going to pass out. Sam was the first friend she had made when she first lived on the streets, he was like a big brother to her. When it was time for her to leave, Lacey promised them that she would see them all again soon.

On the way home with Jim, Lacey was deep in thought, she was happy to return home to Evan but there were a few things that she needed to talk to him about.

When she arrived home, Evan was waiting at the front of the house with Bonnie. Bonnie excitedly jumped around Lacey’s legs as Evan hugged her. “Did you have a good time with your friends?” He asked, relieved that she had returned.

“Oh the best.” Lacey gushed. “so much has happened since I last saw them all.” She paused a little and gazed up at Evan. “Can I have a word with you about something?”

Evan looked at her curiously. “Yes, what about?”

“Follow me.” She said, picking Bonnie up and snuggling her as she walked into the living room.

Lacey sat next to Evan on the sofa and took a deep breath. “I guess Charles has already told you what happened at the station this morning.”

Evan nodded. “Yes he has, why?”

“I’m not on about Racheal stuff.” Lacey nervously licked her lips. “I’m on about Jack.”

Evan stared at Lacey and sighed. Charles had already told him what had happened in the station and already knew when Lacey returned she would have it out with him. He thought he was prepared for this but now the time had come, he didn’t know what to say.

Tears welled in Lacey’s eyes. “You lied to me, you told me Jack was going back to his wife.” Her shoulders slumped and she sighed. “Do you think I’m stupid? I knew deep down that you had killed him.”

Evan sat back and shrugged. “So what’s the problem?”

Lacey stared at him in disbelief. “The problem is you lied to me that night, just like you lied when you told me didn’t know why that man tried to rape me.”

Evan could feel himself getting wound up with Lacey calling him a liar. “So what would you have fucking done that night if I had got in the car and told you that I had just killed Jack?” He cried, throwing his arms in the air as he began pacing the room. “Would you have still come home with me?”

“I don’t know but at least I would have known the truth.” Lacey jumped up and pointed at him. “I knew what you did to Champ and kept my mouth shut about it!”

“That was different with Champ.” Evan snorted. “You were in love with Jack.”

Lacey gasped. “No, I loved Jack, I wasn’t in love with him!” She snapped.

Evan laughed and waved his finger at her. “Well when I brought you back here you knew you were pregnant with my baby and you were going to leave without telling me.”

“Oh my god Evan!” Lacey screamed, gripping her head with frustration. “Don’t turn this around to me. I only suspected I was pregnant then and yes I was going to leave you. But I think lying about murder trumps not telling you I might be pregnant!”

Evan and Lacey stared at each other in silence for what seemed like forever. Evans mobile began to ring and he reached into his jacket.

“Don’t you dare answer that!” Lacey yelled. “This needs to be sorted, now!”

Evan glared at her, gritting his teeth. “Who the hell do you think your talking to?” He growled.

Lacey began to laugh. “I don’t know who I’m talking to. Like I said this morning, I don’t know you, I don’t know anything about you. You know all about me and my life and never once have you told me anything about you and your life. Basically, I am going to be married to a stranger.”

“Oh so you still want to marry me then?”

“No, not until all these loose ends are tied up.” Lacey sat on the sofa and looked up at Evan. “I need to know who you really are. I want and need the truth about you.” She calmly said.

“For Christ’s sake Lacey.” Evan looked up and rubbed his face with both hands then looked back at her. “You wouldn’t like it if I told you.”

“Please Evan.” Lacey clasped her hands together. “I need to know who you really are.”

“Then I guess there’s not going to be a wedding.” Evan stormed out of the room punching his fist through the door and made his way to his office, slamming the door behind him.

Tears streamed down Lacey’s face, she didn’t know if was over between her and Evan.

Jim stood in the doorway. “Lacey, are you alright?” he asked.

“I don’t know.” She forced a smile. “I guess you heard everything?”

Jim nodded. “Everything will be ok, just give him time to calm down.”

Lacey spent the next hour in the garden with Bonnie, so many things were running through her mind. Evan had told her that there wasn’t going to be a wedding, and knew he wouldn’t let her go now she was having his baby. So would they just live together, still as a couple? She didn’t know. Lacey smiled to herself, thinking back to when she first went to live at his house, they argued all the time, but over the weeks the arguing had slowly died down. Now there was so much tension in the house with her being arrested, having Jacks death confirmed and her confronting him about it, it had just escalated into their biggest argument.

As Lacey walked back to the house with Bonnie she could see Evan at his office window talking on his mobile, watching her. She carried on into the house and settled the dog down then went upstairs to have a shower.

When Lacey had finished her shower, she walked back into the bedroom with a towel wrapped around her and sat on the edge of the bed. She hadn’t noticed Evan sitting on the sofa by the window.

Lacey jumped off the bed. “Shit, you scared me then!” She cried, holding onto her chest.

“Can we talk now?” He asked.

Lacey sighed. “Can I get dressed first?”

Evan walked across to her and wrapped his arms around her. “Yes, but don’t bother getting dressed up for our evening meal, just put some jeans and t-shirt on we are going out for a drive.”

Lacey looked up at him. “Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.” Evan walked to the bedroom door he stopped and turned to her. “I’m sorry too.”

“What for?” She curiously asked.

“I’ve just been talking to Jim; he tells me that you have a craving for burgers from some place in the city.”

“Yeah burger king, why are you saying sorry about that?” Lacey answered.

“It stung me inside when he told me that, I should have known that. You spend so much time with him because I am always busy and he takes you everywhere.” He stood in the doorway and stared at Lacey. “It’s like he knows you more than I do.”

Lacey changed into her jeans, t-shirt and tied her hair back, she put a little makeup on and then went downstairs.

Evan was waiting in the car for her, when she got in he leaned over and kissed her. “I love you Lacey.” He said gently stroking her face.

Lacey gazed into his eyes, he looked stressed. “I love you too Evan.”

Evan half smiled and took a deep breath. “I fucking hope you still feel the same way about me by the end of the night.” He started the car up and sped off down the driveway.

I just know he has a lot of horrible things to tell her. You would never know he's a mobster, with the way he is with Lacey. I'll have to come back soon and find out!
