Lacey’s heart thudded in her chest. “What!” she gasped. “what do they want me for?”

“Rachel has reported you to the police for assault in the shop yesterday.” Evan put his hands on her shoulders. “And she has changed her statement about what happened in the restaurant, she’s told them that it was you who beat her up that night and you did put a gun to her head.”

Lacey stepped back in shock. “Surely she can’t do that!” She cried.

Evan nodded. “She’s told them that I sent men around to her apartment threatening her into changing her statement.”

Lacey stared at Evan. “Well did you?”

“What do you think?” he asked.

Lacey had always wondered why Racheal had changed her statement, it had never crossed her mind that Evan was behind it. “I’m fucking screwed now aren’t I?” She cried, throwing her arms in the air.

Evan grabbed hold of Lacey’s arms. “Listen to me.” He said sternly. “Nothing’s going to come of this, just admit what happened in the shop, they’ve got CCTV footage and the shop assistants statement but keep your mouth shut about what happened in the restaurant. Rachael will be made to look like a vicious liar. Charles has already told me, everyone in the restaurant that was interviewed said they didn’t see you do anything.”

“Oh and I guess that was because of you too.” She snapped.

“I didn’t speak to any of them, they just knew to keep their mouths shut.”

Lacey pulled away from him, her bottom lip began to tremble as tears filled her eyes. “Who are you?” She suddenly felt scared and stepped away from him.

Evan was shocked that she had just said that, and could see she looked scared of him. It killed him inside seeing her look at him like that. “Don’t do this Lacey, you know who I am.”

Lacey nervously swallowed and shook her head. “No I don’t, I don’t know you, I don’t know anything about you.”

Evan took a step towards Lacey and she moved away from him.

“Lacey don’t be like this, you’re just panicking, everything’s going to be ok. Just go with Charles to the station and he will talk things through again with you on the way there.”

Lacey began to feel dizzy and fell back onto the stairs. “I can’t, I can’t do this, I want to go home.”

“Evan kneeled on the floor next to her. “Lacey you are home.” He said as calm as he could and went to hold her hand.

Lacey pulled away from him gasping for air. “I can’t breathe.” she whimpered, holding her chest.

Evan held her shoulders. “Look at me Lacey and calm down, look at me, breath slowly.” he said taking deep slow breaths for her to copy.

She looked into his eyes, and began to breath with him and slowly began to calm down.

Sitting on the stairs next to her, Evan wrapped his arm around her. “Lacey, I promise you, this will lead to nothing and like I’ve said already, Charles will go through everything with you. I know you are not stupid and if you get stuck on anything in the interview you will improvise.” He gently raised her face to look at him. “I know you can do this, in fact it’s not just me, we all know you can do this, ok.”

Lacey looked at Jim and Charles, who both smiled and nodded in agreement with Evan. “Ok.” she sniffled.

“Ok sweetheart.” Evan helped her up off the stairs. “Go and get yourself ready, you will go with Charles and Jim will follow because they want to speak to him too.”

While Lacey and Charles drove to the police station, he talked her through the most likely questions they would ask her and advised her how to respond. Lacey struggled to listen to him, her thoughts kept turning to the baby. A few weeks ago, she would never have panicked about being arrested, it wouldn’t have bothered her, but now, now she was going to be a mother, it had seriously changed things.

When they arrived at the station she was fingerprinted and photographed then led into an interview room. Two police officers entered the room and introduced themselves. They told Lacey that Racheal Lewis had made a complaint that she had assaulted her in the store and she had threatened to kill her.

At first when Lacey listened to the police talk about Racheal’s allegations she felt angry but the more they carried on talking, the more her survival instincts kicked in and she began to feel like her old self again. She was an ex-street kid that knew how to handle bad situations. Why was she letting herself get wound up? Evan would be there to back her up, no matter what. Ok she had had her moment of panic in the house but needed to get over it. Lacey then slapped herself hard around the face and shook her head.

The police stopped talking and stared at her.

Charles was shocked. “Are you alright Lacey?”

Lacey took a deep breath and smiled. “I’m alright, I just needed to do that.” she laughed then turned to face the police. “Yes I did pull her hair and push her over, but if you see on the CCTV, she was the one that approached me. I’m pregnant and she was telling me that the father of my baby won’t stand by me. What the hell am I supposed to do when someone is being so spiteful in my face, just walk away?”

One of the policemen sat forward. “She also claims that you threatened to kill her.”

Lacey laughed again. “Did anyone hear me say that? I just told her to keep out of my way.”

The policeman smirked. “And what did you mean by that?”

“Nothing in particular.” Lacey sat back and shrugged her shoulders. “Haven’t you ever said that before in an argument?”

The policeman stared at her for a while, chewing the inside of his mouth. “Racheal Lewis also claims that on the night of April the second, you assaulted her and threatened her with a gun.”

“She claims?” Lacey laughed. “I was arrested that night for it, so you should already know she changed her statement saying that it was a punter that beat her and claimed it was me to get me into trouble and made it up about the gun.”

“But she claims that your boyfriend.” He paused to check his notes. “A Mr Evan Durber sent several men to her apartment, threatening her to change the statement.”

“How would I know?” Lacey threw her hand in the air. “I was in the fucking station! You know what though it just doesn’t make sense, she made those claims about me to get me arrested that night. Then she gets a conscience and tells the truth and now claims she was scared into changing her statement. If she was that scared and intimidated by them why has she changed it back again saying it was me?”

The policeman tapped his pen on the desk. “We don’t know Lacey, you tell us?”

“Ok, I’ll tell you why.” Lacey sat back with her arms folded over her chest. “Rachael is a jealous bitch that is obsessed with my boyfriend, the boyfriend who was once her landlord. He evicted her for making false accusations about me and he sacked her. That’s why she’s making it all up again, to cause more trouble.”

The two officers then looked at each other.

Lacey raised her brows and smiled. “I guess she didn’t tell you that, did she?”

When the interview was over, Lacey was taken to a cell, while the police made the decision whether she was going to be charged or not. After being in the cell for a couple of hours, a policeman took a drink to her, as he was leaving he stood in the doorway and stared at her.

“What you staring at?” Lacey snapped.

“I was just wondering.” He said.

Lacey sipped her drink. “Wondering what?”

“You’ve been here a few hours now.” The policeman stepped towards her, scratching his head. “How come you haven’t asked to see Jack Winter; I know you were friends with him.”

Lacey’s heart thudded in her chest and swallowed nervously. “Why would I ask to see him, I’ve nothing to say to him after the last time I saw him.”

The officer walked closer to her. “When was the last time you saw him?”

Lacey suddenly felt sick. “In here.”

“Do you know he’s dead?”

Lacey heaved. “No.”

The policeman looked at her suspiciously. “Do you want to know how he died?”

Tears welled in Lacey’s eyes. “No.”

“He was beaten to death.” He smirked watching Lacey’s reaction. “His skull was caved in, then whoever did it, set fire to his house.”

Lacey gasped and dropped her head in her hands and began to sob.

“Do you know anything about it Lacey?” he asked.

Lacey kept her head down. “No! she screamed, shaking her head.

“What the hell’s going on in here!” Charles’s voice boomed from the doorway. He grabbed the officer and dragged him out of the cell and sat by Lacey.

“Listen to me.” Charles said trying to comfort her. “You’re going to be bailed now for two weeks, I’ll explain everything when we get out of here.”

Lacey followed Charles to the main desk and was given her bail papers. As they were about to leave, Charles pointed out that there was going to be a serious complaint made about the officer that was in the cell with Lacey.

When they left the station, Jim was waiting for Lacey to take her home. Charles explained before he left, that the police were going to re-interview everyone that were in the club on the night of the assault and gun allegation. He told her, the Police were also having trouble trying interview Racheal’s sister about the shop incident. Apparently, Rachael claims that her sister had heard Lacey had threatened to kill her and now she won’t get involved.

Lacey froze. “What have you done?”

Charles looked surprised. “I’ve done nothing to her but it’s amazing what a bit of financial help to a pregnant girl that’s got nothing will do. Maybe sell out a sister.” He chuckled. “Anyway don’t worry about it, I’ll be in touch in the next few days.”

As Charles drove away, Jim opened the car door for Lacey, “Are you ready to go home now?” he smiled.

Lacey shook her head. “No, not yet, will you ring Evan and then pass me the mobile please?”

Evan already knew that Lacey had been bailed, Charles had already rung him to let him know. He was surprised when he answered his phone to Jim and it was Lacey’s voice he heard.

“Are you on your way home now?” he asked.

“No not yet, I’m going out for a while.”

“Where are you going?”

Lacey rubbed her face with frustration, she knew Evan wouldn’t be happy when she told him where she was going. “I’m going to the café to see my friends.”

There was a long silence before Evan spoke again. “I’d rather you come straight back home.”

Lacey was fed up with all that had been going on around her. While she was in the cell she had begun to think about her friends, she had not seen any of them since she had lived with Evan. All she ever saw were Evan’s friends and staff, they were all good to her but she just needed to spend some time with hers. “No Evan, I’m going out so either Jim takes me there or I will walk across the city on my own.” Lacey waited for Evan to answer her but he was silent again. “Ok, I’ll see you when I see you.” She passed the mobile back to Jim and walked away.

A few seconds later, Jim shouted Lacey, Evan had told him to drive her to the café and wait outside for her.

Running back to the car, Lacey laughed, she knew that she would get her own way if she threatened to walk across the city on her own. She was excited now that she was going to spend some time with her friends before she returned home. A few hours away from Evan’s house was just what she needed.
