After having something to eat and sleeping for a short while, Lacey felt a little better. Yawning, she rolled onto her back and smiled to herself when she remembered Evan was going to take her away for the night. Her stomach fluttered with excitement, she had never been taken away before apart from moving around the country with her mother but she couldn’t really class that as a holiday. Hearing shuffling sounds coming from Evan’s walk-in wardrobe, she climbed off the bed to go to see what he was doing. Just as she got to the door, Evan walked out with a small suitcase. Lacey shook her head and stared at him in shock, for the first time since they had met, he was wearing jeans. The grey t-shirt he wore with them showed off his muscly arms. Lacey’s eyes lit up. “Oh my god, you look different!” Her heart skipped a beat as she eyed him up and down.

Evan grinned. “In a good or bad way?”

“Definitely in a good way.” She giggled.

“It’s a good job you said that.” He laughed. “Now go and get packed, I want us to get away from here as soon as.”

Lacey’s mind suddenly went blank, she didn’t know what to do, “I’ve never been away before, what shall I pack?”

Evan was surprised. “You’ve never been away?”

“Never.” Lacey shook her head. “I’ve never been on holiday and I haven’t got a suitcase.” She felt stupid now asking him what to do.

Evan sorted Lacey a suitcase and helped her pack what she needed to take with her. He stood in the doorway of her walk-in watching her sort some makeup to take with her. His heart went out to her, because of the life she had lived with her mother, Lacey had missed out on so many things in life. His thoughts turned to his own mother, she couldn’t afford to take him and his five brothers on holidays but would always find the money to take them on a day trip to the seaside once a year.

Evan stood behind Lacey and wrapped his arms around her waist, he leaned his head on her shoulder and rocked her from side to side, watching her through her mirror, giggling at him. Hearing her giggle made him want to delay going away for the next couple of hours, he just wanted to throw her on the bed and make love to her. He began to kiss her around her neck and stroked his hands around her waist and hips.

Lacey turned around and playfully slapped him on his arm. “Oh no you don’t, there’s nothing until the forty-eight hours are up.” She ran her hands up his chest and tilted her head to one side. “Have you forgot what you said earlier on Mr Gentleman?”

Evan grinned. “Yes dammit.”

When Evan and Lacey got in the car to leave, Evan switched his mobile off and threw it in her bag to keep until they returned home. As they drove away, Lacey leaned back in her seat and relaxed, just for a while she wanted to forget about being pregnant and enjoy her time with Evan with no stress. But she knew that she would have to tell him soon.

It took nearly two hours to get to the hotel where they were staying and when they arrived, Lacey was in awe of it. Leaning against the car gazing up at the white four storey building, that had crisp white net curtains gently blowing through the open windows, Lacey’s stomach swirled with excitement.

Evan waved his hand in front of her face. “Are you ok?”

“I’ll just go and get my suitcase.” She mumbled.

Evan took hold of her hand. “You don’t need to do anything; it’ll all be taken care of for us.” He led her up several stairs towards the entrance. A man in a blue suit with gold buttons on stood by the glass doors, he greeted them and held the door open for them while they walked through.

While Evan spoke to the manager of the hotel, Lacey watched people walking around the lobby, they were all well dressed, she looked down at her peach summer dress and felt a little shabby compared to them. The manager laughing caught her attention, she turned to see Evan shaking his hand and patting him on the shoulder, it looked like they knew each other.

When they finally entered their room, Lacey was speechless, she felt like a little girl in a fairy tale. Her feet sunk in the plush red carpet, on clean white walls hung large paintings, the dark wood four poster bed stood proudly against the main wall draped with white lace with red trimmings and vases of colourful fresh flowers were placed around the room.

Evan nudged her back to earth. “Lacey are you ok?”

Lacey just nodded, she couldn’t speak.

“You know what Lacey?” Evan picked her up and threw her on the bed. “If this is what it takes to keep you quiet, I think we’ll stay here forever.” he laughed.

Lacey giggled as she bounced over the bed. “This place is beautiful.” She whispered, running her hands over the white silk duvet cover.

Evan lay by the side of her. “Shall we dress up and go out for a meal somewhere or do you want to order room service.”

Lacey gazed around the beautiful room, she didn’t want to leave it. “Can we just stay here?”

“We’ll do whatever you want.” He climbed off the bed to go and find the menu.

Lacey lay on the bed watching Evan look for the menu she still couldn’t believe how different he looked wearing jeans and t-shirt. She knew men half his age that didn’t look as good as him. When Evan found the menu, they cuddled into each other on the bed and decided what to order. They both ordered steak but Lacey couldn’t make her mind up what to have for dessert so Evan ordered her several different ones to try.

After their meal, they searched through the channels on the huge television that was set in the wall and found a film to watch. Settling down and snuggled up on the bed together they didn’t watch much of it, they spent most of the time talking and kissing. They had never felt so relaxed and happy as they did right then. By the time the film finished, they had both fallen asleep in each other’s arms.

When Lacey woke up, she raised her head to see what time it was on the digital clock it was, just past eight in the evening, she turned around to see if Evan was still asleep. He was lying on his side looking at her, she smiled and pushed his face away. “What are you staring at?” She laughed. Dropping her head back on the pillow then shuddered as Evan slowly ran his hand underneath her dress and kissed the back of her neck.

“I was wondering if you wanted a bath or shower.” he whispered in her ear.

Lacey’s body tingled all over. “Shower.” She giggled.

“Ok.” Evan climbed off the bed laughing. “I’ll take the bath.”

“Aarggh Evan!” Lacey cried, throwing a pillow at him.

Evan caught the pillow and threw it back at her. “Remember Mr Gentleman?” He laughed walking into the bathroom.

Lacey rolled off the bed cussing Evan under her breath. Evan left his bath running and came back into the bedroom to get his shaving kit. Lacey sneaked in the bathroom and turned the hot tap off and turned the cold one on, then run into the shower unit laughing.

Getting undressed and stepping under the hot shower, Lacey was still laughing to herself about Evans cold bath running, he shouldn’t have teased her in the bed then left her. A few minutes later the shower unit door opened, Evan had used the bathroom bin as a bucket and threw cold water over her.

Lacey screamed while Evan doubled over, laughing at her. “That’s for sabotaging my bath, are we quits now?”

Lacey stood frozen to the spot trying to catch her breath, “Y Yes q quits.” She stammered.

Evan wrapped a towel around her shivering body and rubbed his hands over her, trying to get her warm. He raised Lacey’s face and smiled. “I love you Lacey Jackson.” He picked her up and carried her back to the bedroom and lay down on the bed with her. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s ok.” Lacey slyly smiled. “My revenge will be sweet.”

Evan laughed, rolled onto his back and stared at the ceiling, deep in thought. Lacey noticed his breathing began to deepen. “Evan, what’s wrong?” She asked feeling a little concerned.

“I don’t think you realise how scared I was when I realised that you’d been taken.” He rolled on his side to face her. “I didn’t know who had you or if they had hurt you, I didn’t know if I was going to see you alive again.”

Lacey didn’t know what to do, she had never seen Evan emotional before.

Evan sat up and rubbed his face, he was trying to hold himself together. “Do you know how hard it was for me to stop myself from falling apart in front of every one?” He held his hand on his chest. “Me, Evan fucking Durber doesn’t do that sort of thing, you don’t know what I’ve had to face in my life and never once I’ve been scared. I’ve fought my way to the top with a grin on my face, not giving a shit about anything or anyone that’s tried to get in my way.”

Tears began to roll down Lacey’s face. “Evan please, you’re scaring me.”

Evan took a few deep breaths to calm himself. “Don’t say that, don’t you ever be scared of me.”  He held her hands and kissed them. “Lacey you are my world, I might not have shown it the way I should have but believe me I’ve never done this before with any woman. Being in love is all new to me and I promise I will do my best for you. I will get it wrong and if I do, you just must tell me and I will make it right. Does that make sense?”

Lacey could feel Evan’s hand shaking as he gently wiped the tears rolling down her face. He coughed a little to clear his throat. “I’ve had so much fun today with you, you make me feel alive but we need to sort ourselves out because it’s killing me.” Evan sighed then stood up. “I’m going for a shower.” He gently stroked her face, smiled and walked away.

Lacey watched Evan leave the room, her head was spinning. That was the Evan Durber she needed to see, those were the words she needed to hear. She raised her knees and lay her head on them, gulping for air then burst into tears. Now Evan had been honest with his feelings she needed to be honest too and tell him about the baby.

Lacey went to the shower room and opened the door, Evan was standing with his hands against the wall with his head down. “Evan.”

He jumped a little, snapping out of his thoughts. “Yes.”

“Can you come back to the room please?”

Evan stared at her before he moved, by the worried look on her face, he felt it wasn’t going to be good news. He wrapped a towel around himself and followed her back into the bedroom and sat on the bed next to her.

Lacey felt like she was going to be sick and struggled to find the right words to tell Evan about the baby, her mouth kept moving but no words came out.

Evan’s heart pounded in his chest, he was worried now. “Are you trying to tell me that you are going to leave?”

Lacey gasped. “Oh no, I’m not leaving you!”

Evan sat up straight and smiled. “So you’re going to stay?”

“Yes, I’m going to stay.”

Evan grabbed Lacey and kissed her. “Stay there.” He said, jumping off the bed.

Lacey watched him rummaged through his suitcase and wondered what he was doing. He took something out of it but she couldn’t see what it was. He held it tight in his hand then sat back on the bed.

“Evan, I’ve got something to tell you.”

Evan raised his finger. “Shush let me speak.”

Lacey began to panic, she had to tell Evan. “No, listen to me.”

“No, you listen to me first.”

Lacey bit her lip and went quiet, Evan looked serious now, she thought she’d let him have his say then she would tell him about the baby.

Evan leaned across and held her hand. “Lacey, I think after what I said tonight, you should know how I feel about you. And I told you before we came here that I’m going to prove how much I love you, didn’t I?”

Lacey smiled. “Yes you did.”

Evan shuffled closer to her. “Lacey Jackson.” He shuffled a little closer. “Will you marry me?” He opened his hand and held up an engagement ring.

Lacey sat back in shock, that was the last thing she expected him to say.

Evan laughed at the look of surprise on her face. “Well, are you going to answer me?”

Lacey stared at the gold ring crowned with a cluster of diamonds and nodded.

Evan didn’t know what was going through her mind as she stared at the ring. Maybe he should ask her again, he raised her face to look at her. “Lacey, will you marry me?”

Lacey took a deep breath. “I’m pregnant!”
