EARLIER THAT DAY

As Lacey walked closer to the café, she looked behind her a couple of times to see if Jim was following her to try and get his money back. He wasn’t, he had his back to her and was on his mobile, she guessed that he was talking to Evan. Lacey laughed to herself wondering if he would come after her again, she didn’t care anymore though, she was hungry and all she wanted was a breakfast. When she got closer to the café she heard someone shout her from the side of it and went to see who it was and it was Jack.

“What do you want?” She snapped.

“Please Lacey can we just talk; I need to know you’re going to be ok?”

Lacey couldn’t believe what he was saying. “What do you care, you’ve done nothing but lie to me?”

Jack put his hands on his head and paced around the side of the building. “I never lied, I couldn’t tell you I was undercover, could I?”

Lacey sighed. “I know you couldn’t but you’re married and we messed around with each other all the time!”

“I know, but I didn’t sleep with you. How would you have felt if we had slept together and when my job here was finished I would have left you and never come back? That would have been hard on you and I love you too much to hurt you like that.”

Lacey’s temper began to rise. “Don’t you dare tell me you love me.” She pointed her finger at him. “You have a fucking wife!” She cried.

“Yes I have a wife but I don’t love her.” He laughed. “We were already on the rocks and we split up the week after you disappeared. I spent all my waking time looking for you, you were more important to me than anything else.”

Lacey stared at him in shock. “You never mentioned you and your wife had split up at the station.”

“I’m not going to broadcast my personal life in front of everyone, am I?” Jack cried, throwing his hands in the air.

“Oh so there were other pigs listening to us then, I fucking knew it!” she cried.

“That doesn’t matter now.” Jack held his hands together like he was praying. “For Christ’s sake Lacey, I just want you to know how much I’ve missed you, I love you.”

Lacey rubbed her head with frustration. “Why are you telling me this now, it’s too late?”

“Please Lacey just come and talk to me. Look at you, it’s not very warm out here and you’ve got no shoes on your feet. My car’s around the back, just come and have a coffee with me somewhere and we can talk.”

Lacey was suspicious. “Why’s it parked around the back?”

Jack laughed. “Come on Lacey, you know I can’t be seen around here now.” he looked at her with pleading eyes and held his hand out to her.

Lacey felt sorry for him, he looked sad, she thought that she would go and talk to him for a while. She walked towards Jack and took his hand and got in his car.

Jack drove them into the city and parked in a coffee shop car park and went in and bought a drink for them. Lacey watched him from inside the car as he put the coffees on the tables outside and put the sugar in the cups and stirred them. When he got back in the car with her, he passed her the drink and sat in silence just staring at her.

Lacey sipped her coffee and rolled her eyes. “What’s up with you now?”

Jack sighed. “Do you know how much its killing me, knowing that you have slept with that man?”

Lacey laughed. “I don’t know how you can say that, you’re married!”

Jack went silent again and Lacey began to feel uncomfortable. “If your just gonna sit and stare at me Jack, you may as well take me back to the cafe, I’ve got things to do?”

“What, like going back to him?” He shouted.

“No, I’m not going back to him!” Lacey rubbed her face, she was beginning to feel sleepy, she’d had no sleep all night. “I’m tired and need to sort some clothes and stuff out.” She calmly said.

“Ok,” he turned his body on the seat so he could face her. “Just finish your drink and I’ll take you back, this was a bad idea wasn’t it.”

“Yes it was.” She mumbled.

Lacey drank her coffee in silence, she didn’t know what to say to him anymore, things felt different with him now. It was like they were both different people. She was so tired now her eyes felt heavy, she hoped Margret would let her have a sleep on her sofa for a few hours when she returned to the café.

Jack put his hand on Lacey’s shoulder and began to gently massage it. “What happened to you while you were in his house, did he hurt you?”

Lacey relaxed and lay her head back on the car seat and looked at him. “No.” She whispered.

Jack leaned forward and took her empty cup off her and wrapped his arm around her waist, he pulled her closer to him and began to kiss her. For a few seconds Lacey enjoyed the warmth of him so being so close to her and kissed him back, she then pulled away. Her head began to spin and was struggling to keep her eyes open she just wanted to sleep.

“Don’t you love me anymore Lacey?” Jack asked, gently stroking her face.

Lacey suddenly felt something was wrong. “What have you done to me?” she whispered, her head dropped to one side and she fell asleep.

While Lacey slept, Jack got out of his car and pulled her over to the back seat then drove to his house. Making sure there was no one about, he carried her inside and lay her on his bed.

When Lacey had left the police station that morning, Jack had stormed out and gone to his house which was only two streets away. He had got some sleeping tablets recently from the doctor, he wasn’t sleeping well because of the stress he was under searching for Lacey. Crushing four of them into a fine powder, he drove to the café to wait for Lacey, he knew that she would go thee when she left the station.

Jack was telling the truth about him and his wife splitting up. Things had not been going well with them for a long time and it had all come to an end when his wife couldn’t take any more of his obsession with Lacey’s disappearance.

When Jack found out that Lacey was living at Evan’s house he was genuinely frightened for her but when he first saw her out shopping with Charlotte, she looked happy. The night he saw her out with Evan at the club, he raged inside with jealousy and when she made him look a fool in the station by saying she had never seen Evan with a gun, something snapped inside him.

Jack lay Lacey on his bed then panicked a little because he didn’t know what to do now he had got her. He tied her up and went back to the station to write his reports and give himself time to think. But the more he thought about Lacey sleeping with Evan the more wound up and jealous he became.

Lacey woke up with her hands tied above her head, her ankles were tied together and she had been gagged. Lying in silence she couldn’t hear anyone in the building, she was on her own. Looking around the bedroom, it wasn’t decorated, there was men’s deodorant on the dressing table, a jacket hanging on the door and a large suitcase with men’s clothes piled on top of it. She didn’t know what time it was but it was just starting to get dark outside. She was cold and thirsty; her mouth was dry from the material tied inside her mouth.

Her thoughts turned to Evan, why did he send Jim for her when she had behaved so badly the night before. Was it just to pay off another debt for his losses again or to sell her online? Lacey knew Jim would have told Evan what she had said to him that morning and about her stealing his money. Would Evan have been angry enough to send him back out for her or washed his hand off her? If he had sent Jim out again, she knew he would have gone to the cafe for her, when he realised she wasn’t there, would he have bothered to look further out for her?

That last night in Evan’s house when she realised that she was in love with him. She could have told him but didn’t want to make a fool of herself. Maybe she could have stayed with him longer and he would have learned to love her back. Now she will never know now, it was too late. She was on her own again now and no one would notice that she had been taken. As for Jack, well he was a shocker, she never saw what was coming with him, all the time he was undercover police and married. Tears slowly fell down the sides of Lacey’s face, she stared at the ceiling, she didn’t know how the hell she was going to get out of this now.

Jack returned later into the evening, he didn’t check on her straight away, she could hear him in the kitchen moving plates about then she could smell food.

He didn’t speak when he entered the bedroom, he placed two plates of food on the chair and he untied her legs, took the gag out of her mouth, as soon as he untied her arms he handcuffed one to the headboard.

Lacey glared at him. “I need the toilet.”

Jack smiled and unlocked the handcuff off the headboard and quickly locked it onto his wrist.

“What are you doing!” She cried. “I need the fucking toilet!”

“Come on then.” he laughed pulling her up off the bed. “I promise I won’t look.”

Lacey yanked him hard and he nearly fell on the floor, she was about to shout but he recovered his balance and slammed her against the wall with his hand over her mouth. “I’m warning you Lacey, don’t fucking wind me up, if you don’t want to be gagged again, you’d best be quiet.” he growled.

Lacey struggled from him and yanked him hard again across the room with her. She was desperate to go to the toilet.

After the awkward moment of going to the toiled being handcuffed to Jack, he took her back to the bedroom and handcuffed her to the headboard again. He passed her a plate of chow mein that he had got from the takeaway. Lacey was tempted to throw it in his face but hadn’t eaten all day and was starving.

They both sat in silence on the bed eating, all Lacey could thing about was Evan, the pain that she felt inside knowing that she was never going to see him again was killing her. But she had to try and keep herself together, she now had to deal with Jack, she didn’t know why he had taken her or what he wanted from her. Tears slowly rolled down her face, her thoughts had turned to Evan again.

When they had both finished eating, Jack took the plates downstairs and came back in the bedroom with a bottle of wine and no glasses. “Look what I’ve got.” He said with a big grin on his face. “Our favourite.”

Jack drank from the bottle and passed it Lacey, it was the same cheap brand they used to drink when he was on the street with her. Lacey drank some and passed it him back. “Jack what’s going on, why are you doing this to me?”

Jack swigged some more of the wine, he lit two cigarettes and passed her one. “I’m doing this because I want you to tell the truth about Evan Durber and what you saw that night.”

Lacey’s heart began to pound through her chest, she looked him straight in the eyes and shook her head, “Then you’ll have to keep me here forever because I didn’t see anything.”

Jack lunged at her, pinned her down on the bed and sat on top of her. “You fucking did.” He roared.

Lacey didn’t struggle she just lay motionless looking up at him and tried to stay cool. “No I didn’t.” She calmly said.

Jack leaned over her, his face was close to hers. “Do you love him Lacey, is that why you won’t say anything, because if that’s what it is, forget him he doesn’t love you.” He sniggered.

Lacey half smiled. “I know he doesn’t.” She whispered, trying to fight back her tears.

“So why are you protecting him.”

Looking into Jack’s eyes, she could see how hurt he was about her and Evan. She then realised she had to switch off and play the game. Lacey sighed. “Because if I snitch on him, his men will come after me then how can we live in peace with that over our heads?”

Jack was confused. “What do you mean, we?”

Lacy wrapped her arm around his neck, she pulled him closer to her and kissed him gently on the lips. “You know what I mean Jack, we can leave here together and start again without the fear of Evan or his men coming after us. I’m not saying anything because I want to protect us.”

Jack gazed into Lacey’s eyes, he loved her and that is all he wanted to hear from her, he wrapped his arms around her and they began to passionately kiss. Lacey cringed inside but she knew she had to do it to somehow gain his trust.

Lying together on the bed that night, they talked and laughed about their time on the street. Even though she was still handcuffed to the bed, Lacey knew she was Jack’s weakness. All she had to do was get him to trust her then she could escape.
