Jack turned Lacey around to face him, she gazed up at him with teary eyes, he had no beard, his face was clean, he didn’t look like Jack. He stood in silence watching her eyes search his face. Her breathing deepened when she looked into his eyes. Lacey gasped, it was Jack!

Lacey threw her arms around him. “Jack!” She cried. “What are you doing here?”

Jack wrapped his arms around her waist and hugged her, he raised her off the floor and gently swung her from side to side. “Where’s my scruffy bitch gone?” he teased. He couldn’t believe how different Lacey looked wearing a dress, her hair was smooth and shiny, her makeup may have been smudged from her tears but she looked stunning. He smiled at her as he moved her away to sit her on a chair. “Lacey, I’ve got something to tell you.” He knelt on the floor by her and his smile started to slowly fade, he began to look uneasy. “I work here.”

Lacey suddenly felt confused. “What do you mean work here?”

Jack remained kneeling and held her hand. “When I met you, I was working undercover, we needed to find out who was bringing the fizz onto the street.”

Lacey’s head began to spin; she didn’t understand why he was telling her that. “Why are you saying that Jack, you’re my friend.” She gripped onto his hand and pulled him towards her. “We were going to leave the city together.”

Jack pulled his hand away and stood up. “No Lacey, we weren’t going to leave together. When I left you in Margret’s café the day you disappeared I was going to sort out a safe house for you to live in.”

Lacey nervously licked her lips. “Why would I need a safe house?”

Jack put his hands on his hips, lowered his head and quietly laughed, he then looked Lacey straight in the eyes. “Because you told me you saw Evan Durber in the alley with a gun the night Champ was murdered. I wanted to keep you safe in return for a statement.”

Lacey’s chest tightened, she jumped off her chair and leaned against the wall, holding her chest. “Jack.” She cried, gulping for air. “How could you do this to me, I trusted you. I loved you!”

Jack spun her around to face him. “I know you did, I had feelings for you too but couldn’t do anything about it because I’m married. Where do you think I used to go to when I wandered off for days?”

Lacey froze, tears streamed down her face, she was trying to process what Jack had just told her. Lacey slapped Jack as hard as she could around the face, as he recovered from it, she slapped him again, she went to hit him again but he grabbed her arms and pinned her against the wall.

Jack held onto her for what seemed like forever, his eyes were cold and serious, she struggled to breath as his body squashed hers against the wall. Lacey suddenly felt uncomfortable with him being so close to her and with the way he was staring at her. This wasn’t the Jack she knew, he seemed so much stronger and aggressive with her. Giving up the struggle so he would let go of her, Lacey turned her face from him and stayed still.

Jack sighed and relaxed his grip. “I know I deserved that but if you hit me again, I’ll cuff you, ok.” he said, moving away from her, he moved a chair and gestured her to sit. “Now we need to talk.”

Lacey plonked herself down on the chair and dropped her head onto her hands. Her head was reeling from seeing Jack again, she couldn’t believe she had been fooled by him.

Jack sat on a chair close to her, he gently placed his finger under her chin and raised her head to look at him. “Are you going to hear me out now?”

Lacey nodded.

He half smiled and sat back, clearing his throat, just before he began to talk, Lacey noticed him side glance a large mirror on the wall.

“Right, I need you to tell me again about what you witnessed in the alley the night Champ was murdered. We also suspect that Evan Durber and Ralph Horton are the ones behind the fizz but they cover their tracks well. While you were in his house, did you see or hear anything that can help us?” Jack paused, Lacey was fiddling with her nails, he could see she wasn’t listening to him. He banged his hand on the table. “Lacey!” he bellowed.

Lacey jumped and looked at him, smiled a little then looked down again.

Jack kicked his chair back in temper and leaned over the table. “Don’t you understand how dangerous Evan is. Help us get him off the street before he kills again!”

Lacey calmly looked up at Jack’s serious face, he looked stressed. She laughed at how funny life can be, it was only a few days ago when she was at Evans house, she had watched a film where there was a large mirror in an interview room and behind it stood more police listening and watching the interview and as soon as the person snitched, they all ran out and arrested the criminal. Lacey looked at the mirror and wondered how many police were watching and listening to them talk.

Lacey sighed and turned to face Jack. “I don’t know what you’re on about Jack, you’re talking shit. I never saw anything in an alley the night Champ was murdered.”

Jack looked at Lacey in disbelief, she wasn’t the same girl that he knew a few weeks ago, she had changed. There was no sparkle in her eyes anymore, just coldness. “Lacey please.”

“No Jack” you get nothing off me because I don’t know what you’re on about, now fuck off!” She screamed, her body shook as she turned away from him, she had trusted him and was heartbroken that a friendship she held so close to her heart was all a lie.

Anger raged through Jack, he grabbed a folder off the table and began to pull out photos and throw them at her. “I’ve been looking for you every day since you disappeared. I’ve been out of my fucking mind worried about you. As soon as I heard rumours where you were, I watched Evan’s house and followed his cars waiting for you to surface from there and look!” He pointed to the photos that were all over the floor.

Lacey shook her head and laughed, the photos were all of her, Evan, Ralph, Charlotte and some of their friends. “I don’t care how worried you’ve been.”

Jack grabbed her arms in frustration and pulled her off her chair. “I thought he’d kidnapped you but when I saw you, you looked like you were having fun. Do you care about him now Lacey, is that why you’re being like this?”

Lacey yanked away from him and turned away, she didn’t want to talk anymore to him.

Jack grabbed her arm again. “Well I’ll show you how much he cares about you, come with me.” He dragged her out of the interview room and down the corridor into his office. He pushed her onto a chair and clicked his computer on. “Here this is how much he thinks of you; I’ve been watching this waiting for your name to show up.”

Lacey didn’t understand what he was trying to show her. “I don’t understand, what I am looking at?” She asked shrugging her shoulders.

“Sicko’s like him put their wives and girlfriends online for the highest bidder to spend a night with them. What a turn on for the bidder to be spending a night with a gangster’s wife without the fear of having their heads blown off. Wives will earn them more money, your name went up two nights ago and because you’re named as Evan Durber’s woman and after your stupid antics tonight beating Racheal up in front of his friends, then sticking a gun to her head, word has already got around about you, you are now worth three hundred thousand and you’re only a girlfriend. They all want a piece of you now.” He then pointed at the screen. “Look there’s your friend Charlotte Horton, she’s a wife and is worth the same as you. If you were married to Evan, god knows how much you would be worth now and do you know what the worse thing about it is?”

Lacey shook her head.

“The bidders are anonymous so you won’t know where in the world or who you’re going to until the last minute and the wives and girlfriends agree to do this for their own personal cut of the money. Did you agree to this Lacey?” He looked at her with disgust.

Lacey stared at the computer with no reaction, her head was spinning, Charlotte new about this! Is this why she was being so friendly to her? Lacey closed her eyes, dropped her head into her hands and began to laugh, there was no use crying anymore. She was right all along, Evan didn’t give a shit about her, he was trying to sell her off like a whore.

Jack kneeled down by her. “Lacey, it’s not funny I told you before if he gets his claws into you he won’t let go. Help us get him off the street and we will keep you safe. You’re already in trouble with the assault charge on Racheal, I could get that dropped for you.”

Suddenly a large built old man wearing a smart suit who Lacey had never seen before stormed into Jack’s office. “Lacey, I’m Charles Jewel your solicitor, don’t talk to him, your free to go.” He said, slamming a pile of papers on Jack’s desk.

Jack stood up and flicked through the papers that Charles Jewel had put on his desk. “What’s going on, what about the assault charge on Racheal Lewis?”

“There’s no charges, Miss Lewis changed her statement she said Lacey didn’t beat her up, it was a punter roughing her up and she made up the gun story to get her in more trouble.” Charles replied, he took hold of Lacey’s hand and pulled her off the chair. “Come on sweetheart, you’re leaving.”

“Goodbye Jack.” She called as she began to follow Charles out of the room, she then stopped and turned to face him. “And by the way, I was never Evans girlfriend, I was just his whore.”

Jack shook his head. “He won’t let you go Lacey, he will come after you again. If you leave here, I can’t keep you safe.”

Lacey cocked her head to one side and sighed. “Oh Jack are you jealous?” She teased.

“Lacey, please.” He whispered.

Lacey thought Jack looked genuinely upset but it was too late now, she smiled and shrugged her shoulders. “Goodbye Jack.”

When Lacey left the police station, she wondered who had sent the solicitor for her, her first guess was Charlotte, she would have done that for her. Lacey looked around her, the city was quiet apart from a few vans making their early morning deliveries to the shops. Taking in a deep breath of the crisp, fresh morning air, she smiled to herself, the sun was shining and birds were singing, she loved that time of the day. It felt like a lifetime ago since she was out so early in the morning and until that moment, she hadn’t realised how much she had missed it.

Looking down at her feet, she’d got nothing on them. It didn’t bother her; it wasn’t the first time she had to walk barefoot through the city. Lacey laughed to herself, a little while ago she was worth three hundred thousand and now she had nothing, not even a pair of shoes. The first place she was going to go now, was the café to see if she could scrounge a discount breakfast off Margret and hopefully something for her feet.

When Lacey was walking across the road towards the café, she recognised a car slowly driving towards her, it was Jim’s. “Get in the car Lacey.” He laughed as he pulled up by the side of her, he knew he was going to have the usual fight with her.

Lacey felt sorry for Jim, it was always him that got the rough end of her. Grinning, she leaned through the car window. “I love you Jim.” She said, kissing him on the cheek and at the same time she slipped his wallet out of his pocket. Jim felt her take it but wasn’t fast enough to grab it off her, he got out of the car to try and take it off her.

Lacey skipped backwards laughing at him while taking his money out, then threw the empty wallet back to him. “Tell Evan from me it’s over, the debt has been paid and I know about the bidding on me, thanks for the money.” She waved it in the air and ran off laughing while she counted it, she had just taken a hundred and seventy pounds off him.

Jim laughed and shook his head as he watched Lacey run off towards the cafe with his money, he wasn’t going to chase her, he knew where she was going. He rang Evan to tell him what Lacey had just done and gave him her message.

Evan was distraught, he had turned up at the restaurant seconds after Lacey had been arrested. As soon as Charlotte had told him what had happened he rang his solicitor. The solicitor was supposed to call him as soon as he arrived at the police station so Jim could be outside waiting for her. But the solicitor didn’t call him until she had been released and now it was too late, she was back on the streets again.

Wow, this girl has some temper! Oh my word this is so good though. Jack could have approached this so much better. I mean really? He had to know she had feelings for him. He also had to know that she trusted him and all but betrayed that. Geez, men.... :D

Lacey's well know for her temper, Thank you, Jack did know how she felt for him but he couldn't tell her who he really was. It was wrong of him to get involved with her in the first place, :)
