Evan stared into his glass, swirling the whiskey around, thinking about Lacey. After she’d left him on the patio the previous day, he hadn’t seen her until he’d retired to his quarters. Lacey was sleeping on his bed, still wearing her dirty clothes. After having a shower, he’d sat on the sofa watching her sleep and had spent the night again, dozing on and off, on the sofa. He still couldn’t understand why she didn’t want to stay in his home; surely, she didn’t want to be homeless for the rest of her life.

The office door opening snapped him out of his thoughts; Jim entered, placed a folder on the desk, and sat opposite him. “I’m sorry,” Jim sighed shaking his head. “Frank is having trouble finding out who the couple is, who were going to be housed in the police safe house.” He paused for a second rubbing his forehead. “But I have found out from the other homeless people, that Lacey was always with a man named Jack.”

“Is he her boyfriend?” Evan curiously asked.

“Yes, and it was a volatile relationship,” Jim choked a little laugh. “No one had a good word to say about him. He was always getting drunk, disappearing, and treating Lacey badly.”

“Ok,” Evan gazed across the office slowly nodding. “I guess Lacey told him about seeing me with the gun, and he’s snitched.”

“Or it could have been Lacey,” Jim suggested.

“No,” Evan said shaking his head. “She doesn’t come across as the type of person that would do that.” He said reaching for the folder in front of Jim and opening it. “Does anyone know where Jack is?”

“No one’s seen him since we took Lacey,” Jim answered looking at him with amusement. “He’s most probably got scared and left the area.”

“Fuck,” Evan hissed, “We need to find him.” He said glancing up from the folder and noticing how Jim was looking at him. “Have I said something wrong?” he asked.

“No” Jim choked a little laugh feeling confused at how quickly Evan defended Lacey. “Tell me again why you’re keeping Lacey here.”

“You know why I’m keeping her here.” Evan frowned.

“I do,” Jim nodded reaching into his pocket for his cigars. “But do you think that leaving her on her own all day is going to make her want to stay?” He relaxed back in his chair lighting his cigar. “She needs company.”

“You’re not suggesting I keep her company, are you?” Evan stared wide-eyed at his friend. “Because I haven’t got time for that!”

“Ok,” Jim laughed standing up. “Security has told me, she’s wandering around the house, snooping in cupboards and drawers. This morning they sent Maud to retrieve the items she’s stolen from you, and.”

“I know that!” Evan interrupted, glaring at Jim. “What do you want me to do about it!”

“Let her go,” Jim sighed shaking his head, thinking there was more to why Evan wanted Lacey living with him. “Lacey’s feral; she’s going to go stir crazy if you keep her here with nothing to do.”

“She’ll be fine,” Evan said thinking Jim was wrong.

Lacey was strolling around the house, feeling bored. After trying to figure out how to work the TV remote in Evan’s living quarters, she’d given up trying; there were too many buttons. Making her way along the hallway towards the swimming pool and gym, she wondered if Evan would be there again. Quietly opening the door to the gym and peeking in, she felt a little disappointed he wasn’t there. As she made her way along the hallway to go to the living room, she heard male voices. Quickly entering the pool room, she quietly closed the door and raised herself onto her tip toes to peek through the small window. Evan and Jim walked past, making their way towards the gym.

Giving them time to enter the gym, Lacey placed her hand on the door handle and pushed it down to open the door; it wouldn’t open. Rattling the handle, she tried to press it down again, but it still wouldn’t open. Not knowing what to do, she puffed her cheeks staring at the pool; she didn’t want to bang on the door and call for help. Feeling hot with the heat of the room, she thought she could go for a dip in the pool. Sitting on the edge of the pool, she splashed her legs in the water, thinking about a time she’d watched people on the TV, diving from the high boards. Remembering how cool she thought it would be to do that; she shuddered with excitement as she glanced across the pool at the diving board. Swinging her legs out of the pool, she felt a little nervous as she made her way towards the diving board. Not knowing how to swim, she thought, surely it can’t be that hard.

Gripping the silver poles on each side of her, she made her way up the steps. Holding her arms out to steady herself, her legs began to shake as she slowly walked along the board; not liking how it wobbled. Standing at the edge of the diving board, Lacey stared at the water below, her stomach began churning with nerves. Holding her arms out in front of her, she slightly bent her knees and went to jump. Suddenly changing her mind, she lost her balance. The board wobbled as she tried to regain her balance. Slipping, she fell onto her backside and bounced off the board. Her head hit the edge of the board as she fell towards the water. Landing with a huge splash, she began to sink into the deep end. A little dazed from hitting her head, she couldn’t find her bearings and began to struggle; her waist-length wet hair was heavy.

“Shit!” the security man cried reaching for his mobile and dialing Evan when he realized Lacey was struggling to surface.

“Yeah,” Evan said answering his mobile. “What!” he cried rushing out of the gym.

“What’s wrong?” Jim asked rushing after him.

“Security said Lacey’s struggling to get out of the pool,” He answered out of breath as he went to open the pool room door; it wouldn’t open. The door rattled as he pulled the handle up and down. “It won’t open!” he cried stepping back and taking a powerful kick on the lock. The door swung open; he could see Lacey struggling in the deep end of the pool. Kicking his trainers off, Evan dived into the pool and swam towards her. Jim’s heart painfully thudded in his chest, when Lacey’s arms stopped moving, “Jesus Christ,” he muttered rubbing his face.

Evan grabbed Lacey around the waist and surfaced, gasping for air. “Lacey!” he cried shaking her. Lacey began to choke; water flowed out of her mouth and nostrils. Keeping his arm wrapped around her as he made his way to the pool steps, Lacey continued to choke and gasp for breath. “It’s ok,” he quietly said slowly walking up the steps out of the pool. A warm feeling spread through his body when Lacey wrapped her arms and legs around him and clung to him like her life depended on him. Wrapping both arms around her, he closed his eyes and held her closer to him. “Let’s get you upstairs and get you dried off.” He quietly said making his way towards the door.

Jim stepped back shaking his head at the thought of what could have happened if it wasn’t for the CCTV in the house; Lacey could have died.

Evan entered his living quarters and tried to put Lacey down, but she wouldn’t let go of him. Entering the en-suite bathroom, he reached for a large white towel and headed for the bed. Sitting on the edge of it, he tried moving her off him, but she still wouldn’t let go of him. “Lacey,” he quietly said trying to pry her arms from around him. “You need to dry off or you’ll catch a chill.”

Lacey released him and moved back to look at him. “I thought I was going to die,” she quietly spoke. “Thank you for saving me.”

Evan stared at the petite beauty, her mascara was running down her cheeks, her wet hair was stuck to her face; for the first time since he’d met her, she looked vulnerable. “It’s ok,” he smiled wrapping the towel around her. “Now go and have a shower, it’ll warm you up,” he said moving her off him.

Lacey shivered pulling the towel tighter around her. “I guess I’m going to have to change my clothes now,” she choked a little laugh eyeing him up and down. His wet black shorts clung to his body, showing the shape of his thick penis.

“Your right,” Evan laughed, placing his hands on her shoulders, and gazing down at her. “Are you going to join me for dinner tonight or are we going to have the usual fight?”

“No fighting,” Lacey answered feeling her cheeks flush under his gaze. “I’d better go and have that shower.” She said turning to walk away. “Thank you again,” she smiled.

Evan’s heart warmed as he watched her enter the bathroom, he breathed in deep; for the first time in a long time, he felt a spark of happiness. Making his way to his walk-in wardrobe, he smiled, hoping he would have no more problems with Lacey, and she’d want to stay.

When Lacey exited the bathroom; Evan was nowhere to be seen, feeling a little disappointed, she went into her walk-in wardrobe to get ready for the evening meal. With her shorts and t-shirt being wet, she knew she had to wear something Evan had bought her. Entering the walk-in wardrobe, she was surprised to see the clothes hanging on the rail; the last time she’d seen them, they were crumpled in the box. Feeling confused when she noticed there wasn’t a crease in any of the dresses; she ran her hand along them wondering who had ironed them. A deep blue silky dress caught her eye. Taking it from the rail and holding it up, a little wave of excitement ran through her body when she remembered how sexy she felt dressing up at the restaurant.

Hanging the dress on the back of the door, she sorted through the underwear drawer and found a matching thong and bra. Her stomach swirled with excitement as she blow-dried her hair. After applying her makeup, she slipped on the blue figure-hugging dress and black high-heeled shoes.

Standing in front of the mirror, checking herself from all angles, she was shocked at how sexy she felt again. Noticing movement in the doorway, she jumped a little; Evan was standing in the doorway watching her. Her heart began to race as he walked towards her; she thought he looked gorgeous in his black trousers, a white shirt with the top two buttons open, and sleeves rolled up. Placing his hands on her shoulders, he turned her around to face the mirror and smiled as he placed his hands on her waist. “You look stunning.” He smiled.

Shuddering at the warmth of his hands resting on her waist; their eyes met in the mirror. Feeling her cheeks flush, she nervously swallowed and looked down at the floor. Evan gently placed his finger under her chin and raised her face. “Keep your chin up, it shows confidence, and you should always thank a compliment.”

Lacey took a deep breath. “Thank you, Evan.” She said turning to face him.

Evan laughed, shaking his head, she sounded more sarcastic than genuine with her thank you. “Come on,” he smiled. “Dinner is ready.”
