When Lacey woke up in the morning, Evan was lying next to her with his arm wrapped around her, she tried to move out of bed but his grip tightened. Lacey sighed, he always did that when she moved around in the bed when he was sleeping and had often wondered how he did it. Even though he was sleeping it was like he was still aware of what was going on around him. Her thoughts turned to the previous night, after hearing Evans conversation she had returned to the bedroom and lay in bed waiting for him and had fallen asleep so she had no idea what time he had joined her. The smell of stale alcohol on his breath was making her feel sick, she gently moved his arm off her and climbed out of bed to go to the bathroom.

When she came out of the bathroom, she heard a car pull up outside the house, she walked to the window and looked out to see who it was, it was Charlotte and Ralph, they had stayed out all night. Lacey glanced at the clock on the wall, it was just gone six in the morning, she then noticed that Evan was now awake, watching her.

When she walked back to the bed, Evan smiled and raised his arms out to her, she climbed in and he wrapped his arms around her. As she cuddled into him she thought it was strange because they never cuddled in the morning, he was always out of bed before she woke up.

“Are you alright after last night?” He asked.

“Yes, I’m ok now.” She shuddered at the thought of it. “I was so scared.”

“I know, but at least I got to you on time.” He pulled her closer to him and kissed her on the top of her head.

Lacey gazed up at him, the previous night’s events were still playing on her mind. “Evan, that man said he wanted a free sample of me before he made a bid on me, do you know what he meant by that?”

Evan didn’t look at her when he answered, he stared straight ahead. “No, I haven’t got a clue.”

Lacey felt his body tense when he answered her. Again, thinking about the conversation she overheard the previous night, she knew that he was going to tell her to leave. Lacey decided she would tell him that she was leaving before he could tell her to go. She took a deep breath and sat up. “Evan when Ralph and Charlotte leave tomorrow, I’ll be leaving too, my debt will be paid in full then.” She said as she moved off the bed.

Evan jumped up and grabbed her arm. “What, you’re not going anywhere, you’re staying here!” he cried.

Lacey yanked her arm away. “I’m not staying here any longer, don’t you think I’ve paid you back more than enough now?”

Evan was confused. “Lacey, where’s all this come from?”

“I heard you talking on the phone last night, I know you want me to leave.”

Evan sat back in disbelief. “So you sneak about listening to my conversations now?”

“No I don’t but I’m glad I heard you talking last night, so tonight will be my last night. I’ll put the show on again for your friends, then that’s it.” she said and turned to walk away.

Evan climbed out of the bed to follow her. “I was fucking drunk and stressed last night, I didn’t mean it!”

Lacey half smiled at him and shook her head. “It’s time for me to leave, I need to get on with my life.”

“What life Lacey!” He shouted, throwing his arms in the air. “Do you really think you can go back to living on the streets after living this way with me?”

Anger boiling inside her. “You only want me to stay here with you because you’re lonely.” She began to prod her finger into his chest. “You think you can buy anyone or anything because of who you are. Well Mr. Durber you’ve failed this time, because this whore doesn’t want to know!” She yelled.

Evan slapped her across the face. “You’re not a fucking whore!” he bellowed.

Lacey held her face, she was a shocked that he had just hit her. “Then what am I?” She asked as tears filled her eyes.

Evan just stood there shaking his head, he was mortified with what he had just done, he couldn’t speak.

“Do you know what Evan?” Lacey calmly spoke. “When I leave here, I won’t give you or any of this around me a second thought. But I don’t want to live behind the city hall and wash dishes for the rest of my life, maybe I could become someone else’s whore.”

Evan lunged forward to grab her, but Lacey was too quick for him and moved away and glared at him. “Tomorrow, I’m gone.” She ran into the bathroom and wedged the door shut so he couldn’t follow her in. Evan kicked and banged on the door shouting her to let him in but she ignored him, she heard him leave the bedroom slamming the door behind him.

Waiting for a while before she left the bathroom, Lacey went into her wardrobe and sorted out her last dress to wear for that night. The jeans, t-shirt and pumps she was wearing the day she was taken to his house were in a draw neatly folded and clean, she set them aside ready to leave. Lacey sighed and sat down in front of the dressing table and began to cry, she suddenly felt sad but didn’t know why. Evan may have been good to her but all he saw her as was someone he could use for company and sex but she wasn’t going to play his little game anymore. And she still didn’t understand why he had chosen her to live with him when he could have had any girl he wanted.

Lacey got herself dressed and put her make up on trying to cover the red mark on her face the best she could. She brushed her hair and stared at herself in the mirror, she didn’t feel good about herself like she usually did, she felt sad.

Evan eventually returned to the bedroom and stood by the door in silence, staring at her. Lacey fought to control her temper, she knew if she opened her mouth and said anything to him, it would explode between them again. He asked her if she was going to join everyone for breakfast, she just nodded and followed him downstairs. There was an uneasy atmosphere at the table that morning, everyone had heard Evan and Lacey arguing.

After breakfast, Evan and Ralph and the two other men that had stayed overnight went into his office while Lacey stayed outside on the patio with Charlotte. Lacey told Charlotte that she was leaving Evans house the following day and asked her for a lift into the city. Charlotte didn’t know what had gone on between them that morning and kept telling Lacey that everything would be ok, her and Evan would soon sort it out between them. But Lacey knew that it wouldn’t be sorted, the debt was paid now and she was going to leave.

For the rest of the day, Lacey found it hard to focus on what Charlotte was talking to her about, she kept drifting off into a world of her own. Charlotte kept nudging her, asking what she was thinking about but Lacey didn’t know, her mind was blank, all she knew is that she just felt sad when really, she should have been excited to leave.

Throughout the day when she briefly saw Evan about the house, he didn’t speak, he would just stare at her. The atmosphere in the house was choking her.

When it was time to get ready for their evening meal, Lacey went upstairs to change. With not eating since breakfast she felt sick, she lay on the bed and burst into tears. She didn’t know why she was crying but had felt it building up inside her all day.

All she could think about was Evan, she hated him! But if she hated him, why had she missed his company throughout the day? If she hated him, why did she get butterflies in her stomach when he looked at her? Why when he touched her, did he always make her tingle all over? She loved his touch. She loved how he made her feel when they had sex even if he was rough with her, she loved it. She loved arguing with him. Then suddenly something dawned on her, she loved him! She was in love with a man that only wanted her for sex to pay off a debt.

Lacey’s head was spinning when she dressed for the evening meal, she felt like a fool waiting for him come up to get her like he always did, but he didn’t come for her. It hurt inside that he wasn’t around to give her his usual compliment on how she looked.

Dinner with everyone was difficult, Evan spoke to his friends like nothing was wrong, while Lacey sat in silence pushing the food around on the plate. She just wanted the day to end so she could go to bed out of the way. But then a conversation she had with Charlotte after their meal, changed everything.

Lacey and Charlotte had taken a bottle of wine into the living room with them. The men had started to smoke cigars and they both didn’t like the smell off them so left them in the dining room. They were both getting a bit drunk when Charlotte began to tell Lacey about the previous night when her and Evan had left the club. Charlotte and Ralph had gone to Evan’s restaurant and she had been talking to Racheal.

Lacey’s heart began to race at the sound of Racheal’s name, she hated her. “Did she say anything about me?” she asked.

“Oh yes she had a lot to say about you.” Charlotte giggled. “She says you’re a homeless dog that Evan picked up off the street.”

Lacey’s chest began to tighten. “So I take it she knows that I’ve been living here then?”

Charlotte giggled all the more. “Yes, she says he keeps you in his kennel. I told her don’t be stupid Evan wouldn’t take someone off the street when he could have any woman he wanted.”

This was now the final straw for Lacey, the anger inside her was now beginning to boil over. She was angry about Evan and the debt. Angry with herself for being in love with Evan. And the anger she felt towards her shit life mixed with the hate she felt towards Racheal for talking about her to Evans friends raged through her body like a volcano wanting to erupt. Everything around her went silent, once again she felt like her life was spiralling out of control.

Charlotte suddenly stopped talking when she saw the look on Lacey’s face. “Oh my god, it’s true isn’t it.”

Lacey’s body began to shake and she couldn’t breathe properly, she glared at Charlotte. “Ring your driver and tell him to come to the front, then ring security and tell them you and Ralph are leaving.”

Charlotte was confused. “But we’re not.”

“Shut up Charlotte!” Lacey snapped. “You’ve said enough already; security is going to think you and Ralph are leaving but you and me are instead.”

Charlotte’s eyes widened with excitement. “You’re going to Racheal, aren’t you?”

Lacey grinned. “We sure are.” Lacey knew that Jim wasn’t about that night, so hopefully it would be easier getting out of the house.

While Charlotte called her driver and security, Lacey calmly went up to Evan’s bedroom, she took her necklace off that he had bought her for her birthday and put it on the small table next to where he always sat. She then took the gun she found a few weeks ago and put it in her handbag.

Taking bottle of wine with them, Lacey and Charlotte got in the car that was waiting for them at the front of the house. When Charlotte told the driver to take them to the restaurant, he didn’t ask where Ralph was, he just presumed the girls were going out on their own for some fun.

As the car drove down the driveway towards the gates, both girls sat in silence waiting for the driver to get a call to take them back. Lacey’s heart pounded through her chest when the large gates ahead began to slowly open, she couldn’t believe how easy it was for her to get out. They drove through the gates and the car began to speed up.

Lacey sighed with relief and looked at Charlotte. “I’m gonna get arrested tonight, so will you tell Evan I’m sorry.”

“Whatever for?” Charlotte giggled. “You can tell him your sorry yourself when go home?”

Lacey put her hand on Charlotte’s arm. “That’s Evans home, not mine and after tonight none of you are going to see me for a very long time.”

Seeing the look in Lacey’s eyes, Charlotte suddenly felt scared. “What are you going to do?” she whispered.

“Oh you’ll soon find out.” Lacey laughed and took a swig out of the bottle of wine.

“Lacey, what about Evan?”

Lacey gazed out of the window and sighed, tears slowly welled in her eyes. “What about him, he doesn’t give a shit about me.”

As they drove towards the city, Lacey began to tell Charlotte all about the debt.
