Over the next few days before Ralph and Charlotte’s visit, Lacey tried her hardest to behave but her temper always got the better of her. Even though she did what Evan asked of her she would still argue with him about everything and he would smash things up around the house in temper. The staff in the house were shocked with what was going on around them, it had always been quiet in Evans house until Lacey moved in. They would listen to their constant arguing and would laugh when Lacey got the better of him, they didn’t know how she dare behave like that with him but he seemed to let her get away with it. They put their bets on Mr. Durber being in love with her. But, no matter how much they argued, they would always end up in the bedroom for hours after and each time Evan checked Lacey’s wardrobe he could see that more of the clothes he had bought her were slowly beginning to be unpacked and hung up.

The day came when Ralph and Charlotte were due to arrive and Lacey was getting a little nervous to meet them. She agreed with what Evan had said, that she needed female company so she was willing to behave and hoped that her and Charlotte would have fun together.

Late morning, security rung through to the house to let Evan know they had arrived. Lacey stood next to Evan in the doorway waiting for them. When the car with blacked out windows parked outside, Evan could see Lacey was nervous. “Are you ok?” he asked, wrapping his arm around her waist, he could feel her body shaking.

Lacey smiled and nodded. When Ralph and Charlotte climbed out of their car she thought what an odd couple they were. Ralph was a tall, thin older man with greying hair, Charlotte was tall too and very slim, Lacey couldn’t take her eyes off her, she looked stunning with her long auburn wavy hair falling loosely over her shoulders, she looked years younger than Ralph.

Evan shook hands with Ralph and kissed Charlotte on her cheek, he gently placed his hand on Lacey’s back and moved her forward to introduce her to his guests. He was about to speak but didn’t have a chance to, Charlotte excitedly threw her arms around Lacey. “It’s so good to finally meet you.” She giggled. “Evans told us so much about you.”

Lacey wobbled forward into Charlotte’s grip and nearly choked on the strong smell of her perfume. She wasn’t much of a hugger and Charlotte had taken her by surprise, she looked towards Evan for help but he was already walking back into the house with Ralph.

Charlotte linked her arm into Lacey’s. “We’re going to have so much fun getting to know each other.” She giggled again and began to walk Lacey into the house.

Lacey glanced behind her and wondered if Ralph had left his keys in his car. She couldn’t drive but was prepared to have a bloody good try at it to get away from the giggling freak next to her.

After sitting in the living room for a while getting to know them a little better, Lacey’s head was aching with the constant talking and giggling coming from Charlotte. Lacey glared at Evan when he told her that he and Ralph were going to his office to discuss business, she didn’t want to be left on her own with her.

Charlotte went silent and leaned back against the sofa, watching Evan and Ralph walk into the office. When the door closed, her whole demeanour changed. She turned to Lacey. “Do you smoke?” she asked.

“Yeah, why?”

Charlotte grabbed her handbag off the floor and stood up. “Let’s go outside for one but don’t tell Ralph, he thinks I’ve given up.” she giggled.

Lacey led her to the patio and they sat there for the rest of the afternoon talking and drinking wine. Lacey slowly began to enjoy Charlottes company; apart from her constant giggling, she seemed different when Ralph wasn’t around.

Charlotte told Lacey that she was twenty-eight and Ralph was fifty-one. They had been happily married for ten years and she couldn’t wish for a better husband, she spoke with so much love for him. Lacey felt a bit jealous of them, she wished that she could find love like theirs. It was awkward for her when Charlotte asked her about her relationship with Evan, she didn’t know what to say, and didn’t want to tell her about the debt she owed and was only with him to pay it off so she just changed the subject.

By late afternoon Evan and Ralph were still talking in his office and few other men had joined them. Charlotte wanted to go shopping to pass some time away, Lacey said she didn’t want to go but Charlotte insisted. When Charlotte went to tell Ralph that they were going out so needed their driver, Lacey sat outside on her own thinking of ways to get out of going. She began to panic and jumped up out of her chair when she saw Evan walking onto the patio. “Evan it wasn’t my idea to go shopping, Charlotte won’t take no for an answer.”

Evan wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her close to him. “If I trust you go, will you come back?”

Lacey stared at him with surprise, she thought he wouldn’t be happy with her going out. She suddenly felt excited. “I promise I will come back.” She eagerly nodded.

Evan took his wallet out of his jacket pocket and gave her a card. “Get whatever you want and don’t let Charlotte out do you, you need to spend more than her if that’s possible.” He laughed.

Lacey stared at the gold card in her hand, she was confused, why he would give it to her. She then realised she couldn’t go shopping with no money so Evan giving her his card was just an act in front of his friends.

Evan wrapped his arms around her again and kissed her. “Is something wrong?”

Lacey snapped out of her thoughts. “Oh, nothing’s wrong. Thank you for the card but.” She paused and took a deep breath. “Can I ask you something?”

“Yes, what is it?” Evan curiously asked.

Lacey sighed. “Well, Charlotte has been telling me all about Ralph but I don’t know anything about you, there’s one thing that’s bugging me though?”

Evan tilted his head to one side. “And what’s that?”

“How old are you?”

Evan laughed. “How old do you think I am?”

Lacey nervously smiled, she was scared of getting it wrong. She hunched her shoulders and grimaced. “I worked it out to be about thirty-eight?”

Evan slowly nodded. “Close, but I’m forty-two, does that bother you?”

“No, why would it?” She looked up at him feeling confused. “It’s not as if we’re a couple?”

Evan sighed and gazed into her eyes. Once again Lacey’s stomach fluttered. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he pulled her closer to him and they began to passionately kiss.

“Hey put her down.” Charlotte shouted, standing in the doorway. “Us girls have got some serious shopping to do.”

Sill holding onto each other Evan and Lacey both turned to her and laughed.

Charlotte put her hand on her heart. “Aww look at you two.” She cooed. “What a beautiful couple you make.”

Lacey felt her cheeks burn and moved away from Evan. “I I’m just going to get a bag.” She stuttered, walking swiftly into the house with her head down.

While Lacey was in the bedroom searching through the boxes that were still in the walk-in wardrobe, for a handbag. She didn’t understand why Evan had asked her if his age bothered her, they weren’t a couple so why would it. She worried about using his card too, it was going to be a waste of money. It’s not like she could take the things she was going to buy with her when she leaves.

When Ralph’s car pulled up to the front of the house to take Charlotte and Lacey into the city, Evan explained to Lacey that Jim would be going with her, as would Ralphs guard with Charlotte. Lacey’s heart sunk, she had promised Evan that she would return and now she thought he didn’t trust her. What he didn’t explain was, because of who he is, it was safer for her to go out with Jim by her side.

Lacey began to feel confused when they arrived in the city.  They had drove on a road straight into it which took about fifteen minutes. When she was first taken to Evans house, it took a long time to get there driving through winding country roads. She guessed that was done to make her think that it would be harder to run away.

When they arrived in the city centre, Charlotte took Lacey to all the best stores. Lacey felt like she was in dream. Her experiences with shopping were at the local pound shop and she would still shoplift her shampoo’s and deodorants from there because she couldn’t afford them. Charlotte giggled with excitement all around the store showing her dresses worth close to five hundred pounds each that she liked and gave two of them to the assistant behind her to carry them for her. Even though the assistants treated them like royalty, Lacey hated the smug brown nosers. They were most probably the ones that had abused her and thrown her out of the back doorways when she was trying to keep warm.

Evan was right about Charlotte being a shopaholic, Lacey couldn’t keep up with what she was spending and when she saw her bill come to five and a half thousand pounds she nearly fainted. Charlottes bill was just under twelve thousand and she didn’t bat an eyelid.

When they finished shopping, Charlotte suggested that they go and have a coffee somewhere before they returned home and while they waited outside the store for their car to pick them up, they were not aware there was someone not too far away taking photographs of them. They were then followed to the to the coffee shop where more photos were taken.

In the coffee shop, Charlotte happily chatted away while Lacey gazed out of the window watching all the people walk past. For a split second she did think that if she slipped out of the door she could easily get lost in the crowd and disappear. But she knew Jim would soon find her, he was like a human bloodhound.

When they arrived back at Evan’s house, he came out of his office to greet them, the way he looked at Lacey when she walked through the door once again made her feel nervous. He looked happy to see her and it didn’t bother him when she told him how much she had spent. Lacey went up to the bedroom to hang her new dresses up and sort out which one to wear for their evening meal.

Charlotte walked into the wardrobe and sat down on the chair. “So Lacey when are you and Evan getting married?”

Lacey dropped her dress on the floor. “W what!” She stuttered. “We’re not getting married.”

“Hasn’t he asked you yet?”

“No, and he isn’t going to ask me.” Lacey couldn’t tell her that they weren’t a couple.

Charlotte stood up and gently squeezed Lacey’s shoulders. “Everyone’s talking about you, no one has seen him outside the house for a while and they know you are living here with him.” Charlotte cupped Lacey’s face with both hands. “Look at you, you’re beautiful, I’ve seen the way he looks at you, he’s like a lovesick puppy. Imagine Lacey, you, the boss’s wife.”

Lacey’s stomach fluttered, she nervously laughed and turned away. “Hasn’t he been like this before with other women he’s lived with?”

Charlotte’s eyes widened. “Oh no, Evans never lived with anyone.” She stopped talking and took a deep purple dress of the rail. “This is nice, wear this one for dinner tonight.” She passed the dress to Lacey and stood in the doorway. “Just think how much more you will be worth if you and Evan do get married.” she smiled then left the room.

Lacey’s head was spinning; she was struggling with what Charlotte had just told her. As she got herself changed for evening meal she began to feel uneasy. Was Evan ever going to let her leave his house. Knowing that Evan would be there soon to take her downstairs, she quickly brushed her hair and refreshed her makeup, she wanted to get out of the room as fast as she could. She didn’t want his compliments, she didn’t want him to hold her hand to steady her in her heels as they walked down the stairs together, she didn’t want to feel her stomach flutter anymore when he looked at her.

Lacey rushed out of the bedroom and ran straight into Evan, he caught her before she could fall backwards.

“Whoa, where’s the fire?” He laughed.

She nervously moved her hair from her face and straightened her dress, she didn’t know what he meant.

“I’ve got something for you.” He said with a big smile on his face.

Lacey’s heart raced, it took all her strength to hold herself together. She swallowed hard. “What is it?”

“Are you alright?” He gently stroked her face.

Lacey nodded and forced a smile. “I’m fine, I’m just a bit nervous for dinner with your friends.”

“Oh don’t worry about them, they’ll love you.” He moved his hand from around his back and held out a small gift wrapped box.

Lacey’s cheeks burned, she took a step back. “What is it?”

“It’s a late birthday present.” He held it closer to her. “Here take it.”

Lacey nervously licked her lips and took the box off him, she gasped when she opened it, inside was a gold necklace with small diamonds in it. Lacey couldn’t speak as Evan stood behind her and moved her hair to one side. He took the necklace and clipped it around her neck. Anger simmered inside her, was Evan taking the piss giving her necklaces just for show. She took a deep breath to calm herself, she had promised Evan that she would behave in front of his friends and she would, surely the debt was nearly paid off now.

Lacey turned to face Evan, she smiled and thanked him. He gazed into her eyes as he moved his hands around her neck, he leaned forward and kissed her gently on the lips.

Lacey just wished that it was all over, when he was like that with her, it confused her.

I figured she would see Jack while she was out. I wonder who's taking pictures of the girls. Evan needs to come to his senses and tell her that he loves her, so then she won't get so confused, upset, and think it's all for show.

You'll find out in 15 who's been taking the pictures.
Evan doesn't know how to tell her the loves her, he's never been in love before, he's making a mess of it with her. :)

She should be confused. Just what did this man really want from her? He's told her nothing about himself and seems in really no rush to, not that he has to, he is the boss after all. It would allay her confusion some if she just knew where she stood with him. In the debt...everything. Very precarious position to be in to be sure.
