A heartbroken Evangeline sat at her dressing table covering the dark circles under her eyes with concealer. After having barely any sleep the previous night she was exhausted. Throughout the night she’d doze for a while then wake up sobbing. Her distress was intensified with not being able to find her mobile. Even though she knew Bradley wouldn’t have answered his phone, she would have been able to text him to tell him she loved him.

Finishing her makeup, she slipped on her jeans and T-shirt; tears welled in her eyes as she stood next to the bed staring at the suitcases on it. In the early hours of the morning, she’d packed them ready to return home. If Bradley didn’t want her anymore there was no reason to stay in Harrisea.

Making her way out of the hotel to George who was waiting for her, she climbed into the front of the car and clipped the seatbelt on. George reached over and placed his hand on her shoulder. “Are you sure you want to do this?” He half smiled feeling worried for her. “I could just take you home right now instead.”

“No,” Evangeline took a deep breath and sat up straight. “I’m not going to run home like a coward. Its time I stood up to my father and whatever happens this morning, I really don’t care.”

“Very well,” George started the engine. “Have you found your mobile?”

“No, I haven’t got a clue where it is,” She gazed out of the window. “What if Bradley’s changed his mind and has been trying to phone me, he’ll think I’m ignoring him.”

“Here,” George passed her his mobile thinking Bradley wouldn’t have done that. “Phone your network provider to have your mobile blocked just in case whoever’s got it can’t use it.”

“Thank you,” Tears welled in her eyes. “I don’t know what I’d do without you."

…………

Heather sat across the kitchen table from Bradley staring at him in disbelief; he’d just told her he’d ended it with Evangeline. Casey was sitting on her knee, sobbing. “I hear what you say but that’s no reason to finish with Evie. I don’t believe for one second that she’s bothered about where you come from.”

“I know, but I just can’t see how it would work out between us. How can I provide for someone who already has everything?” Bradley sighed rubbing his face with both hands as he stood up and leaned against the sink. “Mom, me and Marie had been together since high school. I thought we’d spend the rest of our lives together. When we got engaged, Grandma gave me this house, I worked all hour’s god gave to make it into a home for us. When Casey came along, I’d never been so happy in my life. I thought Marie was happy too, but she couldn’t wait to return to work, could she? And now we know why she wanted to return, she wanted to be with him; a man old enough to be her father who had the money to give her the life she really wanted.”

Heather held Casey, who was still crying, closer to her. She kissed the top of her head and looked up at Bradley. “I saw how heartbroken you were when Marie left. It was me and your grandma that had to pick up the pieces. Don’t you think it’s time to let go of all the anger, it’s five years since she left?” Tears welled in her eyes. “I want my son back. I want to see the kind-hearted gentle man that was happy to stay at home in the evening snuggled up on the sofa with his daughter. The man that loved taking day trips to the beach with his family. The man that didn’t have a cross word to say to anyone; I want to see you happy again. Evie may have her own business, a house, and a car, but she hasn’t got everything. She hasn’t got a mom to love her, her dads a bully and she’s been in an unhappy relationship for the past five years. Can you remember how stony-faced and cold she was when we first met her? Look at her now, she’s never got that smile off her face, she’s relaxed, she adores Casey.” She paused to wipe the tears from her eyes. “Evie’s besotted with you, you have a chance to be happy again and if you can’t see that, then you’re a bloody fool.”

Bradley didn’t know what to say, he shook his head as he turned towards the back door. “I’ve got work to do. “He mumbled walking into the garden.

Casey looked up at Heather, tears were streaming down her face. “I want Evie to come back.” She sniffled.

“I know you do, let’s go back to grandma’s and we’ll phone her,” Heather sighed moving Casey off her knee and stood up to leave.

…………

Parker was sitting next to Richard in Roland’s office when Evangeline’s mobile began to vibrate in his pocket; she’d left it on the table in the restaurant and he’d taken it. He took it out and wondered who Heather was. He was just about to answer it, but pressed reject and quickly slipped it into his pocket when he heard Evangeline’s voice in the hallway.

Roland stared at his daughter when she entered the office wondering why she was wearing jeans and t-shirt. He thought she looked a mess. “What’s going on?” He growled. “Why are you dressed like that?”

“Evangeline,” Parker said quickly standing up.

“Don’t you come anywhere near me!” She snapped turning to face her father. “I guess he’s already told you about.”

“Evangeline,” Parker interrupted reaching for her arm. He needed to get her out of the office before she said too much. He hadn’t told Roland about the previous night.

“Get away from me,” She stepped to the side bumping into Richard who was suddenly feeling uncomfortable and stood up to leave the office.

“What’s going on!” Roland growled.

“How dare you set me up last night with Parker!” Evangeline’s eyes flared with anger. “It’s over between us and.”

“Evangeline!” Parker shouted. “I haven’t told him!”

“Told me what!” Roland bellowed. “What’s going on!”

The room went silent, Evangeline stared at her father. The only sound she could hear was her heart thumping in her chest. Her stomach churned with nerves as she took a deep breath. “I’ll tell you what’s going on. Parker found out that I’ve got a new man in my life and he said he was going to tell you.”

“What!” Roland’s eye’s widened. “Who is he!”

“He’s a nobody,” Parker huffed. “He works in a flower shop in the town.”

Roland looked at Evangeline in disgust. “How long has this been going on!” He growled.

Evangeline stood up straight taking a deep breath. “For three months, and because of the stupid stunt you and Parker pulled last night, I’ve lost him now!”

“Three months!” Parker cried stepping towards her.

Richard thought Parker was going to try and grab her, he quickly moved his arm between them. “Oh no, you don’t.” He sternly spoke.

Roland glared at his daughter, he couldn’t believe she would stoop so low as to date someone who worked in a flower shop. “Well, now your sordid little fling’s over, you and Parker can work on your relationship!”

“Sordid!” Evangeline screeched throwing her arms in the air. “It wasn’t a sordid fling. I’m in love with Bradley and I’m going to do whatever it takes to win him back!”

“So that’s his name,” Parker laughed noticing George in the hallway. “George, could you come in here.” He called.

“Yes?” George stood in the doorway staring at Parker.

“You obviously knew what was going on,” Parker huffed, he’d never liked George. “Why didn’t you report this to Roland.”

“You leave George out of this!” Evangeline cried.

“It’s ok,” George half smiled and glared at Parker. “My contract states that I should not talk about anything I see or hear while I’m chauffeuring anyone who works for this company.”

“Maybe so, but you work for Roland and Evangeline is not an employee of this company so don’t you think you should have alerted her father to what was going on,” Parker tilted his head to one side smirking. “I’ve seen the way you look at her, maybe you were having a bit of her too.”

George’s temper erupted like a volcano, he lunged at Parker, grabbed him by his shirt and slammed him against the wall, “You sick bastard.” He snarled.

Evangeline was scared. “George!” She cried.

Richard was disgusted with what Parker had just said and as much as he would have liked to have seen him get a beating, he didn’t want George to get in trouble. He rushed across the room and grabbed him by the shoulders. “Leave it George, he’s not worth it!”

Parker was struggling to get away, his shirt ripped as Richard pulled George away from him. Roland stood up. “Enough!” He bellowed banging his fist on the desk glaring at Evangeline. “Look what your stupid antics with that man have caused, you silly little girl! Now go back to the hotel, get out of those disgusting clothes and hopefully by the time you return everyone would have calmed down and we can get back to work!”

“When I leave here, I’ll be going back to the hotel but not to get changed.” Evangeline’s body shook with nerves and anger. “Because I’m going home. I’m fed up of you controlling my life. I’m not a silly little girl. I’m a twenty-five-year-old woman who has her own successful business and I will date whoever I want to!”

“You’re not leaving!” Roland growled. “I need you here!”

“I’m going and you can’t stop me!” Evangeline shrugged looking at Parker who was sitting with his head in his hands. “Get him to do your dirty work, he’ll soon learn your nasty underhand ways!” She placed her hand on George’s arm. “Come on, we’re going.”

“Not so fast lady!” Roland barked. “George works for me and that’s my car he drives. He’s not taking you anywhere!”

Evangeline stared at her father, she couldn’t believe he was being so petty. George took the car keys out of his pocket and threw them onto the desk. “Then you’d better find yourself another driver because I quit.” He said storming out of the office.

Evangeline went to follow him. “Evangeline!” Roland bellowed. “If I find out you’re back in a relationship with that man from the flower shop, I will disown you.”

“Then you’ll have to disown me,” Evangeline shrugged feeling like she’d got nothing to lose anymore. “By the way, Bradley doesn’t work in a flower shop, he’s a self-employed mechanic, he just helps his mom in the shop sometimes. And you’ll never guess where he lives.” She bit her lip to stop herself from saying Stoneleigh road, she didn’t want to cause Bradley any trouble. “He comes from a council estate.” She walked out of the office laughing at the look of disgust on Roland and Parker’s faces.

When Evangeline left the building, George was outside having a cigarette with Richard. “I can’t believe you’ve quit,” She felt guilty thinking it was her fault. “What are you going to do now?”

“Don’t worry about me, I’ve already got a new job,” George laughed. “I’m having a month off before I start though.”

“What!” Evangeline gasped. “Doing what?”

“He’s going to work for me,” Richard smiled pointing to the white BMW M3 that they were standing next to. “And my driver is going to take you both home now.”

“Thank you,” Evangeline smiled. “But what are you going to use while he takes us home?”

“You should know I always have a car and the limo with me wherever I go,” Richard wrapped his arm around her shoulder and hugged her. “Now listen to me, if you really want Bradley and you believe in your heart that he’s the one, then you go for it. It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks about him and you, especially your father. He’s too blinded by that ass kissing prick Parker, to realize he’s no good for you. You deserve to be happy.”

Tears welled in Evangeline’s eyes. “Bradley’s got an eight-year-old daughter and she’s absolutely adorable.”

“Wow, a little family,” Richard puffed his cheeks. “It’s a lot to take on, so you have to be sure that’s what you want.”

Evangeline’s heart warmed. “I’ve never been so sure about anything in my life. This is what I want.”

“I never imagined you wanting children,” Richard moved away and opened the car door. “Will you keep in touch and let me know how you get on?”

“I will,” Evangeline nodded. “It’s my birthday in three weeks and I’m having a BBQ party at my house. You are more than welcome to come. Me and Bradley will be back together by then, then you can meet him and Casey.”

“Just let me know the date and time and I’ll be there,” Richard sighed as he watched Evangeline climb into the car thinking she was strong, beautiful and positive, just like Rana, her mother. He turned to walk back into the building when he noticed Roland standing by the window watching his daughter drive away. He thought Roland was a cold bastard and knew he wouldn’t contact Evangeline to try and make things right with her. He glanced down the road at his car thinking maybe now the time was right for Evangeline to know who her mother was. If it didn’t work out with Bradley, then she would have no one.
