Chapter 1

A pain stretched across my face as I started to feel again. “WAKE UP WENCH!” Another pain across my other cheek causing my head to shift to the other shoulder. I tried to raise my hands to my burning cheeks, but they were bound by rope. I tugged and pulled at the rope around my wrists, but that just made them burn now.

A rough hand grabbed a handful of my hair, and violently jerked my head up. I opened my eyes to a dark menacing man standing before me. He had a cruel smile on his face as he licked his lips. His brown hair was unkept and he smelled of sweat, fish, and dirt. He was a pirate. A nasty one at that.

“The Captain has given you to me and you will satisfy me.” His other hand went down my body and groped. Crawling at my skin and garments. A tear fell when I finally understood what he meant. He was going to rape me. They first kidnaped me right off the ship’s plank when we got to a port, then this one is going to rape me!

His hands left from me as I closed my eyes. Suddenly I felt my skirt ripping and being torn away from me. I tried to struggle against the ropes and tried to scream. I was gagged so my screams were muffled. There was more ripping as now there was nothing really left of my skirt. He had full access to my more precious area on my body for his satisfaction. Which he intended to take no matter what I try to do.

“ALL HANDS! Prepare for a fight!” The pirate in front of me sighed and grunted in distaste. He looked at me and punched me across my jaw. I guess he thought that would knock me out, but I just pretended to be out. I felt a trickle of blood down the corner of my mouth from his blow. He had most likely busted my lip open.

The ship rocked and shook from multiple poundings from both sides of the ship. There was not one, but two ships attacking this one. “Damn! Its the Tylers!” Men were shouting and I heard the clashing of swords. “Kill the woman!” My heart froze as I heard that command from someone. I heard a gasp from someone near me, and then a body pressed firmly in front of me. My head was on his shoulder as he shielded me from death at these bloody pirates’ hands.

I opened my eyes and took a deep breathe. He looked more kept and smelled so much better. I lifted my head for a better look at him. He had a grey beard that I could see whenever I could see the side of his face as he fought for me. I tugged and pulled on the ropes that bound me. No use, I couldn’t help. I wanted to fight these bastards that had kidnapped me and wanted to hurt me in the most savage way.

Suddenly the ropes snapped as a movement caught my eye to my right. The man in front of me isn’t looking that way. He can’t see this attacker. I took the rope that was still around my right wrist and used it as a whip. He never saw it coming. The attacker’s neck was now bound by the rope, I yanked catching him off balance, and he was falling to the deck. He gripped the rope and tried to get to me, but the man defending me saw him and stabbed him through the heart while I yanked the gag out of my mouth.

I turned to look behind him, and another attacker were coming. I shifted and landed a powerful side kick to his chest, then to his neck in one fluid motion, and he fell to the deck gasping for air. I grabbed the attacker’s sword from his hand and put my back against my defender’s back. I felt his chuckle as he realized where I was and what I was doing.

He wrapped one arm behind him holding me to his back as he started to move us to a ship. We fought back to back with those who dared to come at us. The closer we got to the other ship, the more attackers there seemed to be. They did not want me off their ship, nor did they want my defender to get off this ship, alive anyways.

Before I saw what happened, two attackers dropped in front of me. I fought the best I could, but one got his hand around my neck and was squeezing as he was disarmed. Everything was going blurry as his hold got tighter. I could feel my lungs demanding air. I dropped the sword and tried to punch and kick, but my hands were getting heavy the blurrier my vision got. There felt like small tremors and popping along my throat.

Soon I saw dark figures behind my attackers as I was feeling so very weak. My punches had no strength behind them any more. Thankfully the hand vanished making me slump forward, but I could breathe now. I felt my defender place my left arm around his neck and was dragging me beside him still fighting.

“Get her to the ship! We will take care of the rest.”

I heard my defender sheath his sword and felt him lift me up into his arms. My head was drape backwards and my right arm was draped toward the sea. I could not move nor did I know what was going on. All I knew was that I was safe with him. He defended me from death by their hands and I knew in my heart I could trust him.

He placed me on what I can only guess was a bed. He tenderly moved my hair from my face and I felt his hand on my neck. He was checking it. “Bastard!” He grumbled to himself. My neck was starting to burn and throb. Soon I felt a cloth on my neck making me sigh internally with the relief.

I felt one of my arms raise and move to my defender. He was untying my wrist and removing the rope. He placed a cool cloth on it and went to the other to do the same thing. He was grumbling and cursing under his breathe at my captors. He placed a sheet over me with my arms on top of the sheet.

“How is she?”

“Battered and bruised, but alive.” When he was not grumbling, my defender sounded really good. “I don’t know if they raped her. Their kind usually do, but I did not see any evidence besides her skirt torn and nearly gone. Though only a doctor and time could tell us that.”

My defender flipped the wet cloth over that was on my neck and his companion gasped. “His hold was very strong before I got there.” I heard him come closer. “We will be back to the Island in a day. Ella’s father is still there, so he could look at her Shadow.” So my defender’s name is Shadow. Funny because my name is Liana which is french for light.

“If you don’t mind Tom, I would like to look after her.” He made a short quick laugh. “She did defend me as I defended her.”

“Alright, but if you need me to watch her or Micheal, just ask.”

“I’m not going to leave her side.” Shadow seemed harsh and final.

“Alright. I’m going to see to the captives and their ship.” The man name Tom walked out of the cabin and shut the door behind him. Shadow touched my cheek that was struck earlier and barely touched me as he traced the outline of my cheekbones and jaw.

“Who are you dear beauty?” I must look terrible, yet he is calling me a beauty. My right jaw was swollen from the bastard’s punch, both cheeks were possibly crimson from his hard slaps in attempts to wake me, and my neck had a cloth on it to cover the massive bruise that was mostly there already. How could I be a beauty looking like that?
