Summary

Ten years on from the Shadow Wars peace has seen Severine thrive under the continued leadership of King Titus. Alexander Tor’al has vanished into the footnotes of history while Nathan Drison has retired to the quiet life. For Brent T’elc, Chosen of Heironeous, life has also changed. No longer adventuring beyond the next horizon he has finally found peace in one location. Commander of an army and beloved leader in Land of Zealots he continues to walk the difficult path of Chosen. Yet Brent knows all to well how fickle finding peace can be. I have used the D&D religion of Heironeous and have done so only out of deep and abiding respect and love for it. I have written added my own analects and personality, but have tried to keep as honestly to some materials found in the D&D world as I can. CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Dawn’s light slipped into the room and crept across the length of the bed. Stirring Brent yawned and opened his eyes. Held protectively within Nathan’s arms he took comfort in the countenance of his oldest friend’s sleeping face. Stretching carefully he became aware of another’s warmth against his back. Dry lips brushed the back of his neck as Patrick pressed against his back. “Morning,” the young man murmured lightly caressing his hip. “Morning,” came Brent’s hesitant reply. Sighing happily Patrick leant on his elbow and looked down at the paladin’s uncertain face. “I’m going to kiss you now,” he warned. Patrick’s smile reached his eyes when he saw Brent lift his chin in anticipation.

Tenderly their lips met. Brent felt his skin come alive and his heart increase in tempo at the gentle action. Maintaining their gaze he slowly moved back onto the bed away from Nathan. Shifting slightly so as not to break the kiss Patrick leant over him, his arm coming around to capture his lover in a warm embrace. “You are mine now you realise,” whispered Patrick cupping the side of his face in his hand. Brent flushed and nodded slightly. “If you’re-”

“I’m sure,” Patrick interrupted kissing his brow. Reaching up he threaded his fingers through Patrick’s dark locks and drew him down into a deeper kiss.

“Well it seems you two slept well,” chuckled a low voice. Breaking the kiss Brent looked guiltily across at his companion. “Sorry,” he blushed reaching out a hand in apology. Clasping it Nathan smiled kindly. “Don’t be. It’s about time you moved on.”

“Actually that’s something I wanted to ask you about,” piped up Patrick. The two paladins looked to him in unison. “Sam and Jason filled me in on the details.” The two continued to look at him without comprehension. “About your relationship,” Patrick added helpfully. Brent and Nathan shared a look.

There was a knock on the door. Brent grimaced. “You two stay here,” he said gruffly. Clambering out of bed he pulled on a shirt and went to answer it. Nathan looked back at Patrick and lay back on the pillows. “What are you doing?” Patrick asked curiously. “Getting comfortable. This could take awhile.”

“And you thought this was the best time to inform me?” retorted an irate paladin. Culin held his ground and replied, “Sir it only came to my attention this morning. If I did not think it was important I would not be interrupting you in fragatto.” Brent let out a slow breath as he thought. “You know our laws. Arrest him privately in his home and escort him to the holding cells. If anyone asks why on the way – and he has agreed to come peacefully  - say he is doing a routine inspection on behalf of the Chosen.”

“Understood.” Saluting Culin turned and departed.

Returning to the privacy of his quarters Brent grinned at the sight of the two men lying down in his bed. “You know part of me hoped to walk in on a compromising situation,” he joked sitting cross-legged on the covers. Nathan snorted while Patrick grinned wickedly and whipped off his shirt. “Stand back boys – a professional at work!” he teased throwing his discarded shirt at Brent’s head and striking a pose. Brent laughed and shook his head. Nathan looked at him appraisingly. “A real laugh,” commented Nathan at Brent’s inquiring look. Brent grinned and gazed affectionately at the shirtless man in his bed. “He has that affect on me.”

“Hey are we doing this orgy or are we gonna talk instead?” teased Patrick winking boldly at the two men. Nathan glanced at them both and chuckled. Sensing the chance to have a little dig at his friend he informed, “Vanessa gave me permission to have fun on this trip you know.” Blushing furiously Brent opened his mouth to speak and promptly closed it. Patrick trailed his fingers from Nathan’s waist to his chin. “Well I for one am curious to see how you kiss,” he admitted glancing at the tongue-tied paladin. “After all you keep him coming back to you time and time again.”

Lifting the hand off his body Nathan carefully laid it on the bed between them. “I think it’s time you told him, soldier boy,” he uttered softly. Patrick glanced between them. “Told me what?” Brent looked long at Nathan who nodded in encouragement.

“Nathan and I,” he begun slowly, “have never been a couple.” Patrick gave him a frank, unconvinced look. “Yeah. Totally believe that. Between the two of you you’ve fathered enough bastards across the face of Severine while creating the legend of your undying love for one another.”

“Patrick,” said Nathan solemnly, “remember the room we’re in.” Patrick frowned as he looked at him and sat up straighter. “So you never had an affair with Brent T’elc, hero of the Shadow Wars and Chosen of Heironeous?” Sitting cross-legged himself Nathan sat quietly and gathered his thoughts. When Patrick went to speak Brent hushed him with a small gesture.

“There has only ever been one man for me,” he began thickly. “He was -and remains- my everything.” Clearing his throat Nathan continued. “I travelled the length and breath of Severine by his side, fought monsters, took down wicked men and bedded hundreds of beautiful ladies with him.” Grey eyes caught green while a small sad smile graced his lips. “And his name?” prompted Patrick.

“Brent T’elc, Chosen of Heironeous,” Nathan replied softly.

“Aha!” Patrick exclaimed clapping his hands together loudly. “Now I know one of you is lying.” The self-righteous expression faded from his face when he saw his two companions continue to stare at him. “You’re serious?” he questioned. “But your name is-”

“Brent T’elc,” Brent answered gravely. Patrick looked at them both with confusion.

Taking Brent’s hand Nathan ran his thumb over his comfortingly. “You were warned that the Chosen has many secrets,” he murmured.

“My name wasn’t always Brent, Patrick,” the Chosen stated.

“But you are the Chosen,” confirmed Patrick.

“Aye,” Brent assured him. “I am the fifth to bare that title although history shall record me as the fourth.”

“Why?”

“I told Heironeous that if I was to pick up his burden then I would need a new name as well. He gave me his.” Nathan smiled proudly and squeezed his hand.

“He would be proud of what you have accomplished, soldier boy.” Brent flashed him a grin and released his hand. Letting out a slow breath the Chosen fixed his gaze on Patrick. “I am not what the world thinks I am. I am different to the Brent who came before me and I am utterly blessed to have Nathan in my life. Without his guidance and steady hand I would not be where I am today.”

“But I’ve seen pictures of Brent in his youth. He looks just like you,” said Patrick. Nathan grimaced at the memory. “They were similar in height and colouring but little else back then. He had to be scarred and his muscles built up to assume his new identity.”

“But why? Why not just be announced as the next Chosen?” Nathan went to answer when Brent cut him off. “That is not a secret you need to be burdened with Patrick. What you know already is dangerous enough.”

The three sat in silence while Patrick mulled over this new information. “Is that why,” he ventured at last, “he calls you ‘soldier boy’ instead of Brent?” The two paladins nodded. “So,” he theorised, “when I’ve call you ‘Brent’ or ‘Chosen’ when we’re alone it’s been a massive turn off because you remember your deceased friend?” Again Brent nodded. “Well then I just need to come up with a nickname of my own to call you,” grinned Patrick rubbing his hands together. “How about ‘Buckets’?”

“’Buckets’?” questioned Nathan. Patrick’s grin widened.

“Because he cums buckets when he’s excited!” Brent face palmed and let out a loud groan. “You cannot call me that!”

“Okay then what about ‘Wanton Sex Fiend?” From behind his hands Brent begged for Nathan’s intervention, “Help me out here Nat.”

“Slow down young man,” Nathan warned placing a hand on his shoulder and pushing him back down onto the pillows. “You can’t just ‘assign’ someone a nickname.”

“Oh yeah? What’s yours?”

“Nat,” grinned Nathan toothily. “Just Nat.”

“That’s not true,” murmured Brent. Lowering his hands he smiled lovingly at his best friend. “Hero. Saviour. My best friend.” Nathan beamed back and pulled him into an embrace. Nestled against his chest Brent felt warm and safe from the hazards of the world. Above his head Nathan looked at Patrick and tilted his head in invitation. Moments later his arms encompassed his friends cementing their new bond.
