Author Chapter Note

Prelude Lilly stood gazing out of the floor to ceiling window in her father bedroom noting that the waters of Lake Ponchatrain were just as troubled as she was today. She was looking for the rain that had been threatening to give New Orleans more water to contend with and slightly annoyed by the noises that the medical machines made; her father’s bedroom mirrored an intensive care room. Lilly called to mind what her father’s Doctor had said nearly two months ago. “Ms Larue your father needs a heart transplant; it is his only option.” She had tried many of times to convince her father to get a heart transplant. Each time he had refused, saying that he was tired of this world and was ready to be with her mother. “Why want you listen to me father” she said softly to her self, as the first drops of rain began to wet the window. “I don’t want you to die father.” Justin Larue watched his eldest daughter through tear-glazed eyes. He was in agony, not from his illness, but from all the terrible things he had done to her, he needed her forgiveness. He had spent his life taking what he wanted and getting rid of the things he did not want unfortunately she was one of the things he did not want. He had realized a long time ago that his obsession with his wife was a sickness. He had even forbid his wife for caring for their daughter. His obsessions had destroyed his life and those around him. His impending death had caused him to look deeply inside of his soul. What he found there increased his need to cleanse his soul before he died. He was hoping that what he was about to do would redeem him. He felt today was his last chance to tell Lilly the truth about her little sister. Justin cleared his throat before calling out to her. “Lilly come closer I have something very important to tell you.” Lilly apprehensively moves away from the window, she was angry with her father, he was hurting her again. She had done everything she could think of to erase the resentfulness her father had shown her throughout her life. She started walking towards him, “yes father” she answered. The sadness she felt was taking its toll on her. The stress from worrying about her father had brought on symptoms of a child hood illness. What am I going to do without you father she thought as she got closer to him? He was all she had in this world, since the deaths of her mother and infant sister. When Lilly reached her father’s bedside, she sat down in the chair nearest to him. Justin pulled his self up in bed whiles thinking about what he was about to say to Margo. “Lilly you have grown into a very beautiful woman, and a dam good businesswoman I am so proud of you.” “Please forgive me for sentencing you to a life void of love and blaming you for things I know you did not do.” May God have mercy on my soul;” Lilly your sister is alive.” “I had to protect her from you and me; I did not want to destroy any more lives, like I did you and your mother. “Please forgive me; I need your forgiveness, Margo.” Lilly stood up and backed away from her father’s bed whiles displaying a look of disgust couple with anger. “You are a horrid man father I hate you.” I have spent every waking hour of my life since I left that dam hospital trying to get you to forgive me for something I obliviously did not do.” I will never forgive you father for lying to me and making me feel like I was some kind of monster.” Lilly moved closer to her father and leaned over him. When she opened her mouth to speak she was overcome by darkness and fell onto the floor. Before Justin could react she sat up and pulled herself up from the floor, by gripping onto the bed. Once again she stood over her father with horrid look on her face. “Where is she father, where did you hide your precious baby girl?” As Justin looked deeply into Lilly eyes he knew without a doubt he had made a grave mistake, he was regretting telling Lilly that her sister was alive. He believed up until that moment that she was cured of her illness. “I will never tell you where she is I will take that secret with me to my grave.” “I am not afraid of you get away from me.” Help somebody help me.” Justin tried to press the panic button on his bed, but Lilly, slap his hand away from it. “Yes you will tell me where she is father, even if I have to shake it out of you.” she reached for his shoulders, and proceeded to shake him violently. Justin gripped the tiny picture he had in his hand and moves it towards his chest. The pain spread up his neck then to his face and down his left arm, it rendered him speechless he released his last breath as he stared into the murderous eyes of his eldest daughter. Slowly Lilly withdrew her hands from her father’s shoulders and stared into his lifeless eyes. “You have finally given me my freedom father; I knew I could count on you.” “You have driven me completely out of my mind.” “Father how could you be so cruel, even in death you are punishing me.” Lilly straightened out her father pajamas and the bed linen before walking over to the intercom. In a frantic voice she called the Nurse. “Ms Charles I need you something is wrong with my father, he is not responding to me.” Nurse Charles walked quickly into Mr. Larue’s bedroom she knew that his time was near, he had exhibited all the signs of dying. She placed her fingers around Mr. Larue risk to check his pulse, than she placed her finger on his neck. “Ms Larue your father has passed on, I am very sorry for your loss.” “Ms Charles I need to let Sadie know father has died, she will know what to do next.” She hung her head down and walked out of her father’s bedroom. She called out to Fannie as she walked down the hallway leading to the sunroom; she knew Sadie would be there.
