I wake up early, but not as early as I wanted. I had aimed to wake up before most people were up and about so I could go for a ride out into the forest, by myself, in peace. However I had awoken about the same time everyone was also preparing for the day.

I dress quickly once more into my riding dress and instead of brushing my hair I just tie it in a bun. I walk towards the main entrance of the palace, deciding that if I went out the most common way – it wouldn’t look suspicious.

I had to make people believe I wasn’t up to anything. I was simply being a good, behaved and polite princess.

As I walk out the massive doors, I see Marcus on guard. Instead of avoiding him I smile.

“Good morning,” I say happily, Marcus smiles back and is about to return my good morning when we both hear a loud thump, and a huge dragon’s snarl. I run up to Marcus’ side and we both stare out to the gravel courtyard just outside the castle’s huge double doors which were both open to let people in and out easily.

Just arrived is Jordan Culling on a huge black dragon. I notice straight away the difference between Dane and this dragon. She didn’t have fangs as long as Dane’s, there was a beautiful midnight blue tinge at the end of each of her scales and her eyes – a crimson red, looked feral, wild and angry.

Sitting astride this beautiful angry dragon was one of the most handsome human males I’ve ever seen. Jordan Culling was dressed as a proper prince should be dressed. He had dark brown hair and a strong square jaw. I watch with wide eyes as he yanks on the harnesses wrapped around on the Dragon’s wings to cause her pain, and she stops her growling at the people who are gathering around to see the new arrival.

“Be calm!” Jordan commands all the workers who are heading out to their jobs, “I have her under my control,” he says this arrogantly and I watch with growing infuriation as he happily walks off her wing to the ground below him.

“That would be your fiancé,” Marcus whispers to me, and I continue to glare at Jordan as he looks around at everyone haughtily.

“Where is the escort for my dragon?”  he asks, aloud, to everyone and anyone around him.

No one responds.

But I do.

“That would be me!” I say, giving him a fake smile, I jog forward to meet him halfway and he looks down at me as I approach him. I look over my shoulder quickly to see Marcus rolling his eyes. But, to my surprise, he doesn’t intervene.

Everyone else close by starts whispering to each other excitedly. I was the tamer of angry violent dragons – and here was another angry dragon. What would happen now would make everyone’s gossip for the day. Hence no one speaks out against me or points out that I am Princess Summer.

“Take these, thank you, I’m off to finally meet my future queen,” he says, giving me the ropes of the harnesses. He probably was thoroughly confused about why a female was given the job to escort his dragon to the stalls. I could tell from the look in his eyes that he held his suspicions about me, but he was being polite about it, “Feed her only one bag of meat, I don’t want her too full. I am still training her.”

“No problem,” I say with another fake smile, taking the ropes. Jordan quickly walks towards the castle and engages Marcus in conversation. I take the opportunity to stealthily make my get away.

I wonder what Jordan would do when he found out his dragon’s escort was actually his fiancé? The thought makes me grin – hopefully this little rebellious act would be enough to make him dislike me enough to drop the engagement.

“Hello,” I greet the lady dragon, who is looking at me with suspicion, “I’ll take you to the stalls – and I’ll get you three bags of meat,” I give her a wink and I think the promise of more food is what makes her follow me willingly so I don’t have to pull on the harness; which I refused to do anyway, so I was kind of relying on her to follow me willingly.

As we make it further down the path I walk in synch with her.

Can you hear me? I ask mentally, but when I get no response I start to feel slightly sick to my stomach at the injustice done to this beautiful dragon. She must be dosed up on the frog poison.

“I’ll let you in on a little secret,” I speak to her like she is my long lost friend, “I’m not actually a dragon’s escort,” I see her red eyes focus in on me, suspicious once more, “Don’t worry, I like dragons. I don’t like Jordan Culling,” I screw up my face to make a point of disliking him, “I’m actually princess Summer, his fiancé,” I giggle to myself and raise my eyebrows at her, to see what she thinks.

She snorts loudly and it sounds like a dragon’s attempt at a laugh.

Since I couldn’t talk to her I had to name her something. I settle with Midnight. It suited her scales.

“Hey!” A guy walking angrily towards me from the stall is pointing at Midnight, “I am the dragon’s escort! What are you doing?”

“Oh,” I mutter as he comes closer, “Sorry Midnight,” I whisper to her, just as he literally snatches the ropes from me and glares down at me.

“You are banned from the stalls, Princess,” the man growls at me, “King’s orders – I’m not letting you accidentally set another dragon free. Especially one that isn’t ours. You should be back inside, where your fiancé is!”

“I’m a princess, watch what you say to me –”

“I can say whatever I like,” the escort snarls at me over his shoulder as he starts to walk away from me with Midnight, “One word to your brother about what happened here, and he’ll never let you out of the castle walls.”

I watch angrily with clenched fists as he notices Midnight coming in for an aggressive snap at him but he pulls on the harnesses too quickly and she cringes in pain instead.

“What the hell,” I mutter to myself. That horrible escort blackmailed me to get me to back off … luckily for him I didn’t want to get into the bad books with my brother any more than I already was. I was just aiming to anger Jordan Culling to the point where he broke off the engagement.

Hence, despite my raging need to order him to stop, for now I let him walk off with Midnight without causing a scene.

Instead I turn towards the horse stalls, to continue on my number one mission. Getting into contact with Dane and Goldy.

I say good morning to as many people as I can, and they all smile at me lovingly or with admiration. Ever since yesterday I was super popular with everyone.

All too happily I find my favourite horse, Sparkle, and I saddle up in no time. Before long I am trotting out towards Patter Forest, leaving the castle, my brother and Culling far behind.
