CHAPTER—

Ezekiel headed to the north once more.

He jogged in bursts stopping every so often to check his surroundings. He scanned the tress often searching for the tell-tell flash of golden eyes and the intense chittering laughter of a hidden Ghoul waiting to ambush him. But the threat of attack couldn’t make him stay still, he had to locate his family. He had to assure himself that they were all still alive.

He made his way toward an open glade in the forest. The last place that he had been able to spot his brothers Nate and Lander. He located Lander first by scent as he finally broke out of the tree line and into a slightly open treeless glade, that was littered with the dead and dying. Ghouls that Lander and Nate had managed to  dispatch.

Some of the Ghouls bodies were littered with bullets, but most of them were dying from lacerations. Ezekiel quickly spotted Lander alone on the other side of the battle field sitting with his back to a tree. He was away form the bodies and blood, with his eyes closed and an arm wrapped tightly around his stomach. He also didn’t stir. Fear gripped Ezekiel.

He scanned the area for any signs of Nate but  he too was gone.

When Ezekiel had caught the scent of his brother’s blood a few leagues back. He had been anxious to find them, BUT now that he could see his brother he was gripped with fear. How badly had he been injured? And where was Nate now?

Ezekiel made his way to Landers side, cutting across the bodies of the dead, careful not to walk too close to a Ghoul that was till spitting up blood or twitching as it drew its final breaths. As he picked the best path to Landers side he began to count the Ghouls lying in his immediate line of sight. He managed to count up to 25 dead before he finally reached Landers side.

Lander had his eyes closed, but he seemed to sense Ezekiels approach, because when Ezekiel dropped down on to his hunches next to his brother’s shoulder, he coughed shallowly and open his eyes.

"Look at you! Fucking Reavers blood! That’s just nit fair!" He sighed. "I’m sitting here bruised like a banana and you’re looking like a fricking million bucks. I must be getting old!" Lander chuckled dryly.

"Lander...." Ezekiel breathed in relief looking him in the eyes to see how lucid his brother was. "Are you okay?"

"I’m fine sissy boy. Don’t worry." Lander answered with a shrugged then groaned and hissed sharply. He put his head back and closed his eyes again. "One of those fucking Ghouls got me in the stomach though."

“Let me see." Ezekiel told him anxiously. Suddenly he worried that Lander had been poisoned. He reached out to remove Landers hand from the giant hole in the torso of his shirt. Ezekiel could smell and see fresh blood staining his entire abdomen. He guessed that deep in his brothers gut was where the Ghoul must have struck him, but he didn’t get the chance to actually see the wound. As soon as his fingertips brushed the back of Landers hands Lander  snarled at him angrily.

"Leave me be!" he hissed opening his eyes again, this time they flashed with green fire for a few seconds. "I’m fine I tell you."

Ezekiel hissed back in frustration. "Lander just let me check!"

Lander rolled his eyes and closed them again. "No." he responded flatly and all Ezekiel could do was groan.

Even though Ezekiel knew that Lander couldn’t have been hurt too badly if he still had the strength to talk, he still wanted to check his wounds.

The last thig he needed was Landers stubbornness to get him killed. “Lander you know damn well that I can’t just walk away without making sure that you aren’t badly injured. Just let me see you wound....." Ezekiel got an idea. "I promise to clean the sheep pins for a year if you let me." he joked with a smile.

Lander chuckled at that, then hissed again in pain. Without another word Ezekiel reached out and gently tugged Landers hands down from the front of his stomach.

The wound was in fact very deep, blood and more blood wept out  in a continuous flow from a medium length slash in his brother’s center abdomen.

Ezekiel examined it expertly and devised that thought the cut was deep, nearly exposing his brother’s inner organs; but that it was a fairly clean slash.

Ezekiel knew for the cut to be so clean, that it had to have been inflicted by talons. Not inflicted by fangs.

Possibly the claws of a Ghouls foot seeing as no black branches radiated across Landers stomach from poison. Ezekiel could see that Landers Leopard hard started fighting to heal him and keep his heart beating while combating massive blood loss.

Ezekiel looked up at his brother and moved back. "It’s not good Lander, but I think you’ll live." he sighed. "Your body’s fighting the blood flow right now, so I don’t think I can move you."

Lander shrugged shallowly. "Told you I was fine." Was his only reply. Then he said. "Oh yeah….You had better go and find out local lassie before that Ghoul that attacked me manages to finish Nate off for good."

Ezekiel looked around for any sign of Nate, then back down at Lander. "What happed? Why did you two get separated?"

Lander shook his head. "It wasn’t by choice! I got hit hard, and then I fell. Nate decided to be a goddamn hero and lure the last two Ghouls away from me…" Lander mumbled in a tight voice, His wound was obviously hurting him. He hissed as he raised his arm and pointed to the east. "The last I saw him, his fluffy tail was disappearing past those pines and two very pissed off Ghouls were chasing him."

Ezekiel nodded. He thought for a moment before he took his sword and laid it across the ground next to his brother’s legs." I Got it. I’ll go find Nate. Keep the sword Lander, your to weak to call out your leopard’s claws or teeth anyway." Lander didn’t answer so Ezekiel stubbornly continued. "Will you be okay if I go?"

"Just go already!" Lander nearly snarled again, then subsided into a weak cough.

Ezekiel picked up his hands and placed them firmly on his wounded and gashed gut. Lander groaned in pain, but didn’t removed his hands. "Keep pressure on your stomach, it will help you heal faster and slow down the blood."

Lander, who didn’t exactly appear to be listening, had turned slightly green. He glared at Ezekiel angrily. "I hate you...”  he panted closing his eyes from the pain. “You know that right?"

Ezekiel smiled down at him. "I love you too big bro."

"FUCKING Homo..." Lander groaned in response, even though he slightly smiled to himself. Then he grew silent. His green eyes drifted shut and Ezekiel watched him fall unconscious in seconds.

After watching his brother for a little longer to make sure he was still in fact breathing. Ezekiel forced himself to move, he told himself that he couldn’t stay there. Lander was okay, injured, but alive. The rest of his family may not be so lucky

Especially Nate who was in his Shift facing two deadly Ghouls. Ezekiel took a deep breath then stood. Worry began clawing at him from all sides suddenly. Worry for his Clan. Worry for his brothers. Worry for his parents. And worry for Brandon.

Ezekiel scanned the surroundings for more Ghouls, strained his nose and ears for some hint of attack, but the woods were dead around him. Nothing moved, but the birds and the pine needles that tinkled and danced in the breeze.

Ezekiel turned on his heel, leaving his blade within his brother’s reach and sprinted off into the woods heading to the east now. Hoping that he found Nate alive.
