Chapter---

As Mantilo broke off of his explanation to walk across the room back to the meeting table, Nate, Ezekiel, and Walter followed behind him in silence.

Each of Ezekiels siblings seemed to be digesting their father’s words, before Nate , with his two toned eyes clouded in a grim light that Ezekiel wasn’t used to seeing suddenly reignited the conversation with a question.

“So basically there isn’t a lot to be known about the Alchemists or even what it is they want form Brandon in the first place?” Nate put in suddenly.

To these words Mantilo let out a heavy sigh, and his voice grew grimmer as he replied.

“Power is always the final arena of man….Hovel and his secret little Clan seems to be using Brandon for something. And now we find out form Brandon that Hovel has a nest of Ghouls. These disgusting forgotten cannibalistic beasts, which the Alchemists have ensnared and trained to obey their commands...”

Ezekiel shook his head “But what is the point of all this? The experiments? The blood? The Ghouls? Why and how do you think they control the Ghouls at all? Those things…aren’t exactly bright.”

Mantilo rolled his shoulders, coming out of his melancholy sluggishly. He rubbed a heavy had against the side of his neck, before he finally responded to Ezekiel’s question.

“I believe Ghouls are indeed mindless.” He said. “The Alchemists must use some form of alchemy I would presume…..And now that they have the Ghouls on a leash they use them to experiment on and probably in other strange rituals.”

Mantilo stopped, sighed, and then released a hiss. He looked at his sons directly and said “Ultimately their end game is unknown, but their current objective is right in front of us.” Ezekiel and his sibling nodded as Mantilo continued to speak. “Brandon saw that they have killed people and Shifters before. Kidnapping children and Mortals. The implications of what Hovel has been doing behind closed doors is frightening….and if it ever go out it will definitely call down the scrutiny of the Elders upon him. “

Mantilo sneered slightly and said.

“In many ways Hovel and the Alchemist’s plans and motivations remain unclear…. The only thing I am positive about at this point is that Brandon was never supposed to escape.” Mantilo tapped the meeting table with his knuckle and made eyes contact with each of his sons.

“ The things that Hovels son knows….could bring destruction to the Alchemists! Hovel may not be content until he has Brandon in his hands again….or hidden dead in the ground where darkness will swallow all the secrets.”

Ezekiel growled under his breath. His blood simmered

“He showed us that they took his blood and fed it to people or other Shifters like Jacob.” Ezekiel said. “They seemed to be trying to get into his power through his blood, but the Alchemists drained Brandon dry every day….the have to have enough blood already. So why continue to chase him?” Ezekiel stopped as he saw and remembered what Brandon had seen. The bodies convulsing as they were devoured by Brandon’s power. What he called The Flame.

“Lots of people burned, except for Jacob and the alchemists and a few lucky men...Most of them just screamed and they burned when I touched them…..When I touch people, plant or animals, they either die or they heal from injury. No one can control it. MY blood…is what they used to get closer to the Flame. They used my blood to Heal, but my blood is just as bad as my touch and a lot less predictable.

Mantilo snarled breaking into Ezekiels thoughts. “In the end we don't have to know what this is all about! Not even Brandon understands this twisted plot and he’s been imprisoned by these people his entire life.” Mantilo sighed. “Hovel and Jacob are playing a dangerous dark game. He sent Ghouls into my lands, Ghouls that killed my Clans men, attacked my family. So what’s gonna stop them from trying to hurt us again so that they can get exactly what they want?"

Nate shook his head walking up beside Mantilo. “Do you think it will go that far? I mean….No matter how powerful Hovel is, he must still adhere to the Sacred Laws. We all have to obey the Sacred Law.” Nate insisted. “No Clan or Mortal Group like the Alchemists is allowed to attack another Clan in force. It’s a law that no one would dare to break….” Nate looked up to the ceiling for a second then shook his head.

“I know that the Dragons may not give a damn about us any other time, but they will not let Hovel trample around and do so as he pleases when the Sacred laws are involved." he said. He seemed assured of this truth. His dual colored eyes glowing slightly silver. “If a law is broken the Elders will come….and they will pass judgement. That is how it has always been….”

“Right.” Ezekiel said looking from Nate to his father. “I mean they only want ONE person. They wouldn't risk a Clan war and igniting the Elders wrath by attacking us directly to get at Brandon. That’s why they've been sending in small hunting packs. First the Ghouls, then the Lions that accompanied Jacob.”  Ezekiels realized. “Hovel would never risk breaking a Sacred Law and attacking us himself or with a group of Alchemists!”

If Mantilo shared this belief it wasn’t very strong, because all their father did was sigh and nod his head. “I don’t know….but we will see when I speak with Hovel tomorrow….” Mantilo said, then, he seemed to pause and think for a second. Then he suddenly turned on Ezekiel and asked him.  “Do you believe Brandon's story?”

Not knowing what he father was getting at, but also not offering any hesitation Ezekiel strongly nodded “Yes…” he said.

“Truly? You don’t think that the images…the memories that he shared with us could have been fabrications? Do you doubt any of it happened? Do you feel it was a made up story of some kind? Or the memories of a mad man?” Mantilo asked him next.

With a frown at these questions Ezekiel shook his head. “No. Never.” Ezekiel said once more without hesitation. Then he shivered as a dark shadow came over his heart. Again he saw the cuts....the blood running like a river. The screams in his mind. How long would Brandon’s memories haunt him? Forever.

“Do you think that Jacob would have shown you any mercy?” Mantilo asked him a moment later probably giving him time to recover.

“No.” Ezekiel growled in answer, balling up his fists. Feeling a blade at his pulse again. Threatening to sever his throat for good. Jacob would have done it if he hadn’t been so busy trying to escape with Brandon….Ezekiel knew he would be dead.

“Exactly my point.” Mantilo sighed. “This is going to be a fight. Whatever Brandon is? Whatever he is to them....they don’t want him in anyone else’s hands.” Mantilo shook his head slowly. “And Jacob is just a dog on someone else’s leash; Ready to kill or maim on command. Hovel is the real threat here. In actuality even though he is just a mortal he is a very powerful man. The Dragons hold the throne, but in their absence Hovel has held all the political power over the years with man. WE have to tread carefully tomorrow. Powerful and evil men....do not like the word “No”.”

"Everyone has to adapt to change.” Walter hissed darkly then smoothing over that small outburst of anger from his features, his elder brother looked to Mantilo.

“I want to come with you two." Walter said to Mantilo and Nate. "Three is faster anyways. We’ll spread the word around the villages together."

Mantilo smiled at his son, but then shook his head. "I’ll be picking up Drin and Erin from the Western Village and enlisting their help in spreading the word so I’ll have enough runners with me. I need you here Walter. I want you to keep an eye on the surrounding forests. Make sure that there aren't any surprises while were out there. Any strange sounds, or tracks I want you to report back to me ASAP. "

Walter nodded. "I’m on it." He said simply before biding them all goodbye and leaving to patrol the perimeter of the house

"Shouldn’t I be helping?" Ezekiel asked his father when he realized that all of his brothers were about to head out, but Mantilo swiftly grabbed hold of his shoulder to stop him.

"Ezekiel I want you to keep an eye on Brandon right now. He acts tough, but he knows he’s cornered. Trapped. So he’s gonna panic. But he can’t run this time and he’s got to be terrified with Jacob stalking the halls all night long. And…someone’s got to tell him that his father will be coming to see him tomorrow." Mantilo told him releasing his arm.

“God. He’s still shaken up about Jacob.” Ezekiel grimaced. “I don't know what he’s gonna do when I tell him that Hovel is gonna be here tomorrow.” He told his father.

"He’s gonna try to run off, I’d guess.” Mantilo sniffed and smiled slightly. “Just keep him calm and out of sight for the rest of the night. The safest place for him right now is in his room."

"Alright.” Ezekiel said then smiled at his father as Mantilo turned and began to walk away with Nate.

Suddenly Ezekiel felt the well of respect he already had for his father deepen within him. His father was putting so much of his energy in to Brandon's safety. This was a sticky situation to say the least, but Ezekiel knew that his father feared few things in this world. Men and Shifters were not on that very short list. Mantilo had no reason to submit and every reason to fight. Ezekiel secretly hoped that his father having grown fond of Brandon being one of those reasons.

Even though he had disliked Brandon greatly from the beginning he had never ceased to attempt to help him, or even ease his pain. Ezekiel could sense that like his mother Mantilo had come to care about Brandon deeply and Ezekiel was more grateful for that then he knew how to put into words. Ezekiel called his father back and breathed a soft “Thank you." To the man. It was all that he managed to say. It felt inadequate and childish, but it was all he had.

His father looked back at him his eyebrows raised, Ezekiels sudden somber tone possibly catching him by surprise. “No need to thank me.” Mantilo told him with a chuckle after a small pause. “All this excitement is nice after the last few decades of planting crops and chopping down trees. Besides...I enjoyed pissing the Lion off."
