Chapter--

Mantilo, Nate, Drin and Lander were sitting in the meeting room when Ezekiel arrived.

The room was large, part library, part meeting hall, it was the second largest room in the Leopards Mansion next to the Sparing Center on the other side of the home. The tall ceiling was perhaps the single oldest piece of the Mansion that had been built nearly two hundred years ago. A mosaic was painted across the roof, depicting thousands of skirmishes and slices of the Leopards Clans history.

Tragedies such as the Orange Plague that stole the lives of hundreds and nearly destroyed his Clan in its infancy.

Battles such as the Ancient war of the North. When Nathaniel; The once Great Clan Chief of long extinct Bear Clan attempted to invade the Leopard Lands and wipe out the competition for resources.

And Climatic Events such as the earth quake that shattered the Leopards Clan Lands and created the basin in the Northern Forests that later became known as the Grand Lake.

Beyond the stylized and historic art on the roof the walls were covered end to end with books. A giant hard wood mahogany table large enough around to seat at least fifteen people dominated the center of the room.

Three large windows to the far left, high backed chairs with cream colored cushions and a large chandelier finished off the room. The Chandelier glowed bright with electric light instead of candles. Seeing as the flame would have damaged the mosaic above, Ezekiel and his brothers had had the Chandelier installed as a means of preserving the murals on the ceiling.

The first thing Ezekiel noticed besides the fact that Jacob was standing and that all of his family members were sitting was the fact that  Jacob and Mantilo were deep in conversation when he arrived.

When Ezekiel walked in every one of his family members except for his father nodded at him

The Guardians sat back silently allowing the two men to converse with relative ease.. Mantilo was too busy with Jacob to speak to him, but that was fine with Ezekiel who quietly moved into the meeting room, stopped inside of the door way, and just listened.

The truth was Ezekiel and his siblings were not there to speak, but to listen and support their father.

He was the one that held all of the power. The only one whose authority Jacob had to respect….or pay with his life.

So as Ezekiel stood back from the table, slightly behind Jacob he clocked into on the tail end of something that Jacob was saying to his father.

…when you do this….you go against the Laws!!” Jacob was nearly shouting at Mantilo. The Lion was still dressed in the clothes he had worn the day of the attack. Rugged Jeans and a white tank top that left his arms bare. The dirt smearing his pants from the attack, made it apparent that even though Jacob was guest he was not welcome in any way and had probably not been permitted in any other part of the home except from the meeting room.

A part of Ezekiel realized that the Lion had gone the last three days without any food or water either. But as the thought summoned nothing but a vindictive joy in his heart, Ezekiel focused on the conversation and not on Jacob.

Mantilo nearly shouted right back at the Lion. His hair was out of its braid this morning. Long dark black hair hell free around his large shoulders and chest and he was dressed in casual jeans and a black shirt. His eyes flared with anger as he said “By law I am within my right to provide sanctuary!”

At this point Jacob cursed and pushed away from the table. “This is going nowhere!” He snarled at Mantilo.

“Well then! Let’s talk about something else besides the Law?” Nate suddenly inserted perhaps sensing that Jacob and Mantilo needed a small break from the intense argument they must have been engaging in for some time before Ezekiel had arrived.

With a glance at Mantilo Nate flashed a smile filled with fangs at the Lion. It was achingly apparent that his brother disliked the Lion intensely as he stared at the Lion the way a Wolf looked at a deer. “Tell us about the Ghouls….Jacob.”

“Excuse me….? What Ghouls?” Jacob coyly replied with a blank smirking expression that made it quite clear that he was simply being difficult. “Be specific.”

With a tilt of his chin and a cold glare that Ezekiel was shocked to see on Nates face his brother paused and then growled in expiration at Jacob across the table. “The Ghouls!? The Giant fucking beasts that you sent after Brandon!?”

“Ah…those Ghouls...” Jacob smirked harder than shrugged as Nate smiled back at him, but his wolfish smile was just a little bit darker then even Jacob could match. Soon enough Jacob broke eye contact with Nate before speaking further.

“The Ghouls actually belong to the Alchemists. They belong to Hovel. I had no hand in them being sent here….and more importantly the Ghouls have nothing to do with what we are here to discuss today.” He said.

Mantilo hissed softly jumping back into the conversation as Jacob tried to smoothly move away from the topic of the Ghouls. “How can it not?” His father asked the Lion.  “Those….beastly abominations are a hostile force that was released on my Lands and wreaked havoc for nearly two months!”

“Clan Head…you are familiar with the term Allied Clan’s…are you not?” Jacob shot back, dusting a hand across his shoulder before crossing his scared arms across his chest. Making his arms flex with lean muscle and cause the old scars on his arms to whiten and stand out. Standing this way should have made Jacobs seem more relaxed, but all it did was draw attention to the extensive damage that had been dove from countless battles.

With a cool air Jacob continued to speak to Mantilo completely disregarding the rest of the Guardians. “The Alchemists and my own Clan have united, we are allies in battle and against common threats….but by stipulation of this very same pact between our Clans I am prevented from speaking in any negative fashion about my Ally or their actions.”

Jacob explained needlessly since everyone assembled already knew this information. Still Jacob continued to explain and Mantilo allowed him. “To speak on the Ghouls or on anything except Brandon would be a gross breach of my Clans pact with the Alchemists.” Jacob finished softly.

With a rumbled and short chuckle Mantilo tilted his head at Jacob and replied “Those are old words Lion. You speak as though we are still in the times of the wars and the famines. The tradition of Allied Clans is old and out dated. As are you’re reasons for deny to speak about the Ghouls. “

Jacob laughed slightly. “Well, let me be more present with my response then.” Jacob replied with a smooth wave of his hand and a dry tone. “Snitches….get stiches.” He snipped. “I can’t say more on the issue of the Ghouls because it was not my Clan that sent them to your home.”

Jacob took a breath and shrugged before continuing. “Besides for me to go against not only an ally to my Clan, but a powerful group such as the Alchemists….would be extremely stupid. Considering that the act would bring the ire of the Alchemists down onto my own head and my people. I do not have the authority to make this decision and tell you anything, but what I came here to speak on and that is Brandon.”

Lander let loose a hiss and locked openly glowing slit eyes on Jacob. Every inch of his brother’s body was tight, speaking to open aggression and little patience.  “Those fucking abominations killed my father’s men and desecrated our Annual Celebration!” Lander sharply retorted to Jacobs excuses. “Our home was invaded. A Child died in a skirmish…!”

“Well, they are nothing if not wild animals.” Jacob suddenly interrupted Landers tight words. Jacob glanced at his brother, then away in a dismissive fashion. “Their function is simply to hunt and retrieve. Nothing more. What happens while they do this is not my fault. ” Jacob sighed seemingly unconcerned with the fact that people had died when he and the Alchemists had sent the Ghouls out to retrieve the runaway Brandon.

How many other people had fallen victim to the mindless dogs in the twilight hours of the last three years as Brandon desperately tried to avoid capture?

Ezekiel couldn’t help but wonder.

Would Jacob even care if the number of deaths was known to him?

“Bastard!” Lander cursed Jacob suddenly with a snarl, but rather then raise to the occasion Jacob simply sent Lander a cold smile. Before he turned towards Mantilo and sighed.

“Alright now that were past the Ghouls, if I can be allowed to sit…” Jacob .maybe we can all come to an understanding. Something that will negate any further bloodshed…or animosity.

“No.” Ezekiel found himself unable to squelch that one small denial. Ezekiel knew that he was too involved with Brandon to be objective once he spoke….he found himself talking more and more. “You’re a traitor….in every sense of the word you don’t get to fucking sit.” Ezekiel sharply debased with only a mild sense of restraint keeping him from roaring. “You’re….Your just disgusting Jacob….” Ezekiel laughed unkindly and with a bitter edge. “How can you live with yourself after what you’ve done?”

“Ezekiel….” Nate warned, his light voice mixed with a canines whimper as he tried to struggle up from his seat and step into Ezekiel path, was like a lash that stopped Ezekiel just short of launching across the small space that separated him from Jacob and ripping out his throat.

With a small tsk of air through his teeth Jacob turned from the table to regard Ezekiel with a nonchalant air and a tilt to his head. “Traitor? Is that what the Lil One called me? Or is it simply what you think about me? How dare you judge me….simply because Brandon weaved you a pretty tale about our past together?” Jacob asked him.

“But that’s exactly what you are.” Ezekiel pointed out with sharp venom in his words. “Traitor. You were his friend, His caretaker…..He loved you.” These things weren’t hard for Ezekiel to say….or even to acknowledge.

Jacob was and would always be someone who had been an integral figure in Brandon’s life.  Not lovers. Or friends. Something more and less. Something deep. Something broken. A part of Ezekiel knew that it would be childish to ignore these fact.

And another part of Ezekiel wanted to say these things because he simply wanted to hurt Jacob with the truth. Make the Lion understand just how tragic his loss was, because Brandon was lost to him. Because of Jacobs actions Brandon would never belong with him again. And something in Ezekiel sensed that at the core of everything…..Jacobs care for Brandon had been real.

Twisted….but real.

These truths Ezekiel wanted to drive home….as well as illicit answers from the Lion to a lot of the questions that Ezekiel had.

“You act like you care about him….” Ezekiel told the Lion slowly locking gazes with him as he spoke. “But I don’t think you comprehend how much he loved you and you let them hurt him! Repeatedly! For what?” Ezekiel yelled at the Lion with a glare. “A taste of his power!? For some stupid fucking experiment!? You got Nora killed. You let everything that happened happen and you didn’t try to stop it!”

The accusation seemed to peak Jacobs cold interests, because with a small smile that melted into a sneering grimace Jacob softly growled at him and said “Little puss….you have no fucking idea of the things that are in motion here. The things surrounding Brandon’s….”

Jacob paused, seemed to suddenly catch himself, before standing taller, and tightening his fists slightly at his sides. “So what if Brandon told you about Nora….and the Experiment!? You don’t understand the things that happened then! And now TERRIBLE things are going to happen if you don’t back the hell off!” Jacob threated openly, but Ezekiel was completely unmoved.

“Things like what?” He challenged Jacob ignoring the itch of his fangs behind his lips as the inner beast yearned to climb to the surface of his mind and maul the man standing across from him. “Things like allowing a child to be tortured for….years!! For YEARS Jacob!?” Ezekiel shouted. “You were his everything, but you still ignored what was happening to him! So what things are you gonna do to him now?”

“Fuck you!” Jacob barked with little hesitation on restraint. His ire bleeding across his cocky features making him appear at once outraged and much older. “I took care of him! He was never supposed to…!” Jacob snarled back at Ezekiel, seeming agitated at being reprimanded like a child. But just as quickly as his cool and cocky façade cracked, Jacob stopped himself and appeared to withdraw slightly. A small shadow of hesitation lit in his gaze as he swallowed down his next words.

Of course Ezekiel sensed his withdrawal and tried to force the Lion to slip up once more.  “He wasn’t supposed to what!? What the hell sis you people do to him?” Ezekiel hissed at Jacob but instead of answer his question. Jacob simply laughed again. The mocking tone of his voice literally made Ezekiels blood boil.

The unquenchable thirst he felt to rip the Lion apart in that moment escalated to new heights, but both Mantilo’s presence….and Jacobs’s dark gaze held Ezekiel at bay.  The Lion was play with him. Ezekiel sensed that perhaps Jacob was talking in circles just to get a rise out of him. But if Jacob was doing that…..it also meant that he had something he was hiding.

“Jacob finish what you were saying before about Brandon!?” Ezekiel demanded snuffing down the snarl that he wanted to release as he glared over at the Lion. Feeling confused and anxious wanting to get to

But once more Jacob seemed to withdraw into himself.  A strange light graced his eyes as he glanced down and away from Ezekiel. And suddenly he was speaking again, but this time it was clear that Jacob was speaking to himself and not to the Shifters watching him. “He was never there. He isn’t the one…I know that….I know…” he seemed to mumble softly.

Intensely driven to make the Lion speak openly Ezekiel steeped closer and snarled in his face.“What are you trying to say!?”

When Jacob looked back at him…the strange light was still there in Jacobs gaze. IT was blazing….Ezekiel feared that the light in the Lions gaze was the spark of insanity.

“I’m trying to tell you what I should have known from the beginning.” Jacob softly imparted with a sharp sneer. But the cocky smile on his face seemed wooden as he spoke. Jacob stalked close to Ezekiel, pointed up to the ceiling, his hand between their faces and said.

“That man upstairs….He’s the key…and that’s all he’ll ever be boy.” Jacob dropped his hand, but didn’t stop speaking. “He is not just Brandon. He is not my Lil One. He is definitely not you’re….lover.” Jacob sneered harder after stating these things as if he were affirming them within his own heart instead of simply trying to convince Ezekiel of their truths.

“Brandon has a purpose….A destiny, which I will be helping him to achieve along with the Alchemists!” Jacob growled now. His breathing starting to become ragged as he spoke at a more elevated tone.  “His power….belongs to us. We cultivated it! We sacrificed to obtain it! He must return so that we can….”Jacob suddenly and quickly snarled, took a deep breath, shook his head…..and just grew silent.

Ezekiel blinked and blinked again….

Then he hissed in rage as he realized that he had been hopelessly hanging on to Jacobs every word. He had been hanging on and hoping that in the Lions strange ramblings that there would be some kind of explanation as to why Jacob had betrayed Brandon for so many years. “So?” Ezekiel found himself urging as Jacob continued to drag out the silence that had followed his outburst. “So that you can what!?” Ezekiel asked him directly.

But Jacob didn’t respond. The spark in his gaze had yet to flee. He still seemed withdrawn. Speaking in broken sentences that for some reason he refused to finish. What was he hiding? What sacrifice? What destiny!?......Was anything that Jacob said true…..Or was he just wild and unpredictable….and maybe insane?

Tired of being played with….and sensing a distinct and disturbing silence in Jacobs eyes as they glared at each other Ezekiel choose to end the games.

“Well whatever it is you think you have planned for Brandon.” Ezekiel softly growled, feeling his fangs growing to a grotesque degree as rage built inside of him. He flashed his canines, knowing that his visage was both terrifying and hateful. “You won’t get the chance to do it to him. In fact you’re never going to see him again if I have anything to say about it Jacob.”

These words more than anything else seemed to snap Jacob back from abyss of his own mind. With a passionate snarl of his own Jacob stood taller and a deadly rage melted across the spark in his gaze, snapping him back to the moment in an almost frightening display as the Lion went from withdrawn to downright homicidal.

“As if you have any say in this matter….Guardian.” Jacob laughed the cocky smirk returning with a good dose of open aggression and possessiveness. “In the end….Brandon will be returned. The Lil One does not belong here with you. You can’t stop destiny boy.”

A coldness took over Ezekiels thoughts as Jacob pushed his words aside. “I can always kill you; You and all of the other sick fucks that are trying to hurt him.” He breathed. “And if you fucking call me “Boy” One more time Jacob….I’m going to rip that lying tongue out of your fucking mouth”  And he knew he meant it to the core of his soul.

“Oh….” Jacob nearly purred in happiness at the idea of bloodshed. “I would so like to see you try LITTLE BOY!” Jacob snarled. His teeth and nails lengthening suddenly as he took a step toward Ezekiel. Seconds from leaping at his throat.

Ezekiel went to lunge right back at the man. He welcomed the challenge. Nothing would have made him happier in that moment then the chance to return the broken bones that Jacob had gifted him with only a  day or two ago.

But he never got the chance to even curl a lip back at the lion before his brothers were stepping in front of him.

A wall of hisses and wolfish snarls. Drin, Lander, Nate and Walter began to crowd the lion. Daring the Jacob to test them all. Eyes glowing with malice.
