Chapter—

During the time following….Brandon focused on nothing but escape.

He hated himself. He hated what he was….he wished he could die.

And….Brandon’s wish for death came in the form of one lonely night almost three years after his escape.

The night when he somehow found his way onto the Leopards Clan Lands.

He had evaded the Alchemists for years.

He had taught himself how to fight. How to scavenge for food.

He had taught himself how to hold down the power of the Flame and lock it away from the world.

He would only feed it scraps of energy. The energy from a tree or a rabbit. He only gave it small tastes of the life it craved then Brandon went back to starving it. IT was a vindictive and hateful thing that he did to harm it and himself.

The power disgusted him. He found the Flame and himself repulsive.

Still over the years he had managed to survive.

He had taught himself how to kill game and how to use money and talk to people and trek from city to city. From forests to mountains.

And it was as Brandon was climbing across one particular mountain on the out skirts of an unknown and gigantic Pine forest that he sensed the vile energy of the Alchemists dogs on his trail.

The Ghouls had picked up his scent somehow three cities ago.

They always managed to close in on him. His power was like a flashing SOS sign in the night. The Alchemists could sense him….and so could the beasts that they used to hunt him.

And so Brandon had been running nonstop for weeks. He was exhausted.

He was sick.

This day would mark the seventh month he had gone without feeding the Flame….and he was in a lot of pain. The Flame was so hungry. And its pain was his pain. He grew weaker and weaker as the minutes passed by.

And then on the third day….the Ghouls surrounded Brandon as he stopped and made camp and tried to regain some strength.

***** From the shadows they emerged.

Vile, seven foot giants. With lean bodies, skin like olives, eyes black as night….and talons as long as a blades.

Hideous laughter and whooping cackles fell from their long fang filled snouts and black spittle ran down their faces. Slimy and poisonous.

Wordlessly Brandon jumped up from his fire and ran, but there was nowhere to go. He had to fight.

So….coming to a stop at the edge of a cliff, Brandon turned, pulled out his blade….and prepared to kill the beasts.

He had fought the Ghoul multiple times. He knew their weaknesses. But Brandon also knew that if one of Ghouls somehow over powered him…..that they would drag him back to his Father.

The first Ghoul fell to Brandon’s blade.

The Ghoul rushed him, surging past the camp fire that Brandon had created.

Thinking fast Brandon kicked some burning embers into the Ghouls hideous face. And as it squealed and reared back and tried to claw the embers out of its eyes….Brandon rushed in, and split its throat open from ear to ear.  The Ghoul gurgled as a fountain of blood gushed out of the gaping slash in its flesh. It quickly collapsed and died.

But Brandon didn’t get a chance to feel any joy about this, because the seconds Ghoul, came in from the side, slammed into Brandon, locked its jaws into his stomach and tackled him….strait over the edge of the Cliff.

Brandon screamed as the Ghoul tore into him with teeth as sharp as needles, but as thick as blades.

Falling, in agony, and weakened by blood loss, Brandon reared back, and slammed his hunting knife into the Ghouls lower jaw. His arm rang with numb pain as the Blade slide in, cracked across bone and the Ghoul squealed and ripped away….taking a chunk of Brandon’s body with it.

After that they fell nearly one hundred feet to their deaths.  Sheer rock cut, and sliced and broke nearly every bone in Brandon’s body as he tumbled down a vertical path….before slamming into solid rock at the bottom of the cliff. The Ghoul fell down beside him. A mashed up puddle of olive skinned hamburger. Its thick neck was bent at an awkward angel. And Brandon’s blade was embedded in the side of its crushed and lifeless jaw.

It took hours for Brandon to crawl up from the ground. IT took him thirty minutes to regain his eye sight and motor ability so that he could crawl over to the dead Ghoul and retrieve his blade.

Then Brandon ran. Deep into the darkness.

He ran for two days strait. Blind. Terrified. Hungry. Wounds turning black and odorous with infection.

Slowly broken bones healed….and his head stopped bleeding somewhat, but the bite wound in his stomach was too extensive and full of poison….and the Flame was too weak to repair the damage he had sustained.

The cold brush of water slapped Brandon in the face and the scent of pine started to slowly incase him as he ran further and further into the darkness.

He could feel the eyes of the world on him. Brandon knew that it was only a matter of time before his luck ran out….and he was forced to return to the Base.

Jacob was hunting him…The Ghouls were after him.

His father would never allow him to be free.

All Brandon could do was continue forward….even as the Flame continued to grow stronger inside of him. Every day it got more powerful. He became more powerful.

Its hunger….felt like liquid madness and ambrosia.

And the memories….the memories of Nora. The truth about the Experiment…about all of the people he killed thinking that they were only food for him to devour.

The pain of it all…..tortured his mind and heart.

“Nora….I miss you…..I miss you….” Brandon started to sob as he stumbled drunkenly into trees. The hard bark, and the sharp scent of pine making him realize that he was deep into an unknown woodland.

He had to keep going. He couldn’t stop because if the Alchemists took him back….Brandon knew that a lot more people were going to die.

If nothing else he had to prevent that. He had to find some way to atone for killing her….

****

“Please stop! No more…!” Brandon screamed suddenly tearing his hands away from Lander and Ezekiel. The darkness, the pain…..he knew that he was drowning….but he couldn’t scream for help.

Because he deserved it.
