Chapter--

“Put on the Gloves.” Nora was saying to Brandon about Half an hour later.

They were both standing in front of his bedroom door.

Why?” Brandon asked even as he reached into his back pocket where he always kept the gloves safely tucked away from when they visited the Garden.

Nora grabbed his hands and helped him don the tight leather over his fingers, before she answerd him. “Because where were going…” She started to explain, releasing his hand. “You’re going to be around a lot of energy…and I don’t want you’re….powers waking up and alerting the other Alchemists to our presence in a part of the halls that we shouldn’t be in.”

Surprised Brandon asked her. “The other Alchemists can sense my power?”

Nora shrugged and said. “I can sense it almost all the time….” She explained, big beautiful eyes shining for a moment in awe as she looked at him. “You’re like this beautiful little star burning brightly at times and dim at other times, but powerful. So powerful.” Nora shook her head turned to the door and flipped her braid over the shoulder. “Now…follow me.” She commanded.

And just like that the two of them slipped out into the white washed halls.

Intensely reminded of time when Nora had taken him to the Garden for the first time, Brandon wasn’t too surprised when Nora not only led him down halls that felt unfamiliar, but hallways that seemed to go deeper and deeper into his father’s home then he had ever known was possible.

Suddenly the white hallways turned into one single hallway….and at the end of that hall, was a giant door.

IT was a door unlike any door that Brandon had ever seen before.

Where all the doors he had ever seen were made out of thick glass….this new door looked much heavier then glass.

It was silver and Brandon couldn’t see strait through it.

The only reason Brandon even realized that the door was a door at all was because Nora walked up to it….and after locating a small dialing pad beside the wall, she pressed a few buttons and the silver square in the wall, hissed, clicked and swung open on soundless hinges.

Beckoning Brandon forward with her hand, Nora pulled the silver door, backwards, and ushered Brandon forwards into a giant, pitch black room on the other side of the door.

Once Brandon walked into the darkness he couldn’t see anything.

He was forced to stand in anxious abandon just inside of the room. With no lights to see by….Brandon was stuck with this emotion….and an overwhelming sense of life burning somewhere in the room before him. He sensed the flow of it beneath his skin.

The Flame jumped to attention and instantly tried to pour down into Brandon’s hands, but with the black gloves on, Brandon was able to mostly ignore the sensation….even if his mouth watered slightly at the idea of feeding.

Slightly revolted at this realization, Brandon was caught off guard, when bright white lights flashed to life all across the celling of the gigantic room that Nora had led him too.

With a gasp Brandon looked back, just in time to see that Nora had closed the silver door, and flipped a switch.

A small hum of power shot into the silence as three long rows of lights, built into the ceiling glowed above them.

The room its self was long and wide enough that Brandon felt like he was standing in ten Gardens stacked side by side and one atop the other.

The amount of space available was….dizzying. In all of his life the biggest room that Brandon had ever been to was the library.

This room was at least three library’s combined.

And yet for all of its amazing size and width, the room was sparsely furnished.

There was the large silver door, grey carpet, some pillars that were also silver, and one single window. But this window was not small…..it was one entire wall of the room. The window reached from the floor to ceiling.

With a small chill Brandon quickly realized that the Window wasn’t a window…and that this room wasn’t just a room. There was something else in there…with them.

With a confident air Nora suddenly walked deeper into the room as if she had been inside of it a million times before.

“Come Brandon….this is what you need to see.” Nora commanded and explained as she walked over to the clear wall and gazed out into the other side. “These are the Ghoul Pits.” She said then silently waited for Brandon to join her.

Sensing that the energy was burning on the other side of the glass Brandon went to her. Nora stood back a few feet and waved him closer.

Curious, Brandon stepped up, put his face against the glass, and peered beyond.

A wide league of open filth, mud and dead sticks, stretched out before him on the other side of the glass.

Giant holes clawed and dug into the walls and earth boiled and churned with the movement of long nimble bodies.

A few of the bodies moving in the darkness seemed to  sense Nora and Brandon watching, because they came out of the darkness…and started walking towards the window.

Brandon couldn’t quite grasp what he was seeing the first time that he saw a Ghoul upclose.

The moment Brandon saw the beasts crawling across the ground on all fours an intense feeling of disquiet and fear settled in his heart.

The Ghouls possessed hyper elongated faces and arms and legs. They were also taller than any man Brandon had ever seen in his life. They had solid black eyes…skin ranging from brown to black to green and the long almost skeleton body’s that they possessed seemed to move  as gracefully as a wind, but even from a distance it was easy to see that the Ghouls were as strong as rocks.

Fascinated and repulsed by the beasts that looked like men, Brandon put his fingers against the glass, just as one particularly large and Ghoul lumbered up close to it.

Its ears were twitching back and forwards on the side of its head like it was listening to a million different things. And even though Brandon was looking right through the glass at the Beasts face and chest….the Beast didn’t seem to see him directly. At least not with its giant black soulless eyes.

Still the beast seemed to know Brandon was there….just inches away…and with a movement that made Brandon shiver, the Ghoul put up its hands and pressed them on the glass.

Its dirty black talons smearing a strange black fluid across the surface.

“What are they?” Brandon asked in revolted awe, but Nora didn’t get the chance to answer that question before with a meaty smack the Ghouls attacked. In a frenzy that seemed to start out of nowhere one Ghoul after another slammed its head into the glass with all of its might.

With a scream of horror Brandon jumped back, but this only seemed to infuriate the hideous beasts even more. Nails clanged across the glass, teeth knocked, fangs slammed and bodies lunged as nearly ten different Ghouls started attacking the glass all a once.

“As I said before those are the Ghoul Pits…..and these are Ghouls.” Nora softly told him.

“Nora!” Brandon screamed backing away from the glass, thinking that in moments the glass would shatter and the beast on the other side would pour in and kill them.

Nora didn’t share his fear….

In fact she didn’t even appear frightened as she stepped up next to Brandon and looked at the Ghouls slamming it face into the glass, over and over and over again.

“It’s okay.” She softly comforted him. “The glass is enhanced with Alchemy. Teeth and claws can’t even scratch it….much less break it. We are safe.” She slowly explained.

Brandon didn’t wholly trust that, but when he did look back at the Glass, he soon noticed that there were no chips…or cracks….or scrapes in its thick surface.

No matter how hard the Ghouls attacked it the Glass didn’t even shake.

And then suddenly, the large Ghoul that stood in front of Brandon slammed its head into the glass one last time….and with a horrifying spay of black blood across the glass, its jaw snapped at an awkward angle. Fangs, blood, black slobber….and a bone all jutted out in the wrong direction.

IT was terrible to see….and yet the Ghoul kept slamming it face into the glass. Over and Over and over.

Until another Ghoul seemed to notice all of the blood leaking onto the glass.

With a merciless swipe of its claws, the new Ghouls jumped on the Ghoul with the broken jaw…and started ripping into its chest and face with its own fangs.

Other Ghouls attacked the one with a broken jaw…and then it was a free for all. Blood and more blood.

“The Ghouls are cannibalistic.” Nora softly explained, watching the Ghouls rip and tear into each other without any hesitation or disgust. “The Alchemists are cultivating them here. Experimenting on them. They use them for various things.” Nora continued to explain as the Ghouls moved on the other side of the Glass ripping and pulling the dead Ghoul apart to share. “Alchemy. Rituals. You name it….and this is what we use the beasts for.”

“But why?”  Brandon asked her next, turning his eyes away from the horrible sight….and thanking god that he couldn’t hear what was happening on the other side of the thick glass.“This is terrible Nora. Those things are….disgusting.”

Eyes reflecting a heavy heart….a sardonic laugh fell from Nora’s lips and placing her hand to the glass Nora whispered back to Brandon.

“Do you think so Lil ONE?” She asked. “Well, the Alchemist have always believed that we must do everything in our power to gain power. To unlock every locked box and to turn over every stone in our path WE must dominate all lesser things. This world is Man’s world….All things are Mans tools.” Nora pulled away from the glass and looked down at her hands. Black lights were swirling around her hands. “This is the belief of the Alchemists. This is our divine Rite. The Grand Master has pounded this truth into us all.”

At the mention of his father, Brandon swallowed and asked Nora. “Is that what you believe Nora? Are all things tools to be used by you?”

Nora dropped her hands and the black lights stopped swirling around her fingers. A pained silence filled the room and for a long time Brandon was sure that Nora would not answer him, but then with a small scoff she spoke.

“No. Alchemists shouldn’t play god.” She replied looking at Brandon, then back at the Ghouls on the other side of the glass. “This… It’s….disgusting.” Nora claimed, raising a fist and slamming it against the wall.

“These beasts spend their time either raping their own women and children….or simply turning on the sickly and ripping them to shreds for food. Their blood line should never have been revived by us.” Nora shook her head…turned…and walked over to Brandon.  When she got close enough she reached out, took his hands and squeezed them. He didn’t feel her touch because of the gloves, but he felt the warmth as Nora continued to speak to him.

“We have been using Alchemy to breed and clone the Ghouls….then using more Alchemy to bend them to our will.” Nora softly explained. Then she stopped and looked Brandon dead in the eyes. “This is wrong….and so is what we’re doing to you.”

The fear and sadness in Nora’s eyes slapped Brandon across the face…and so did her words making him pull away from her. “Me?” He asked her. “Nora what are you talking about?”

Before Brandon could retreat any further Nora reached out and grabbed his hands again, but this time instead of the warmth….her touch made him flinch in fear.

“Lil One this place….is a Research Base.” Nora started to say. Her eyes were blown wide in fear and anxiety as if she was afraid to continue…and yet couldn’t bring herself to stop. Her words poured out like she couldn’t bear to hold them in any longer.

“This is a Base built deep in the wilderness.” She hastily pointed to the room and then to the ceiling. “This is not your home…or my home. All of this was built by Hovel. I’d like to tell you that we are out in a place called Washington. I’d like to tell you that this Base was built just a couple hundred miles away from the Puget Sound, deep within a forest where no man or Shifter dwells, but seeing as Hovel has decided to leave you ignorant of the world outside, these things would mean nothing to you.”

Enraptured by these words, but too confused too truly understand it all, Brandon shook his head. “What are you trying to say Nora?” he asked her.

Perhaps seeing that Brandon was becoming lost…Nora took a deep breath…and slowed down. “I am saying…that the procedures happen to you because you are nothing but a Ghoul to the Alchemists” Nora stopped her eyes searching Brandon’s. Then she said. “You are an experiment Brandon.”

Shock came first….followed by disbelief….then pain.

Brandon didn’t have to truly think on it too much.

He didn’t have to waste time trying to ignore the truth in Nora’s eyes. He had no reason not to believe….and all the reasons in the world to trust her.

Still….some questions tumbled from his lips. “But…” Brandon whispered, feeling weak in his body and soul. “But I thought Hovel was my father…?” He asked her.

After a small pause Nora sighed. “His is your father….but you are not his son.” Nora told him. This statement didn’t hurt Brandon because he held no love for his father, but it did make him blink in puzzlement until Nora continued to speak. “Hovel has never thought of you as anything except for a specimen to examine.”

A specimen to examine….It was a truth that Brandon had always kind of understood….and it was the main reason why he had latched onto Nora and Jacob. They had treated him with care.

Hovel may have been his father….but Brandon was nothing to him.

Nora took a deep breath.  Reached out and touched Brandon cheek as if to soften her words.

“To me…You are not a simple specimen. You are a lovely boy….” Nora softly told him, a wealth of emotion in her eyes made Brandon’s heart squeeze. Nora looked in his eyes, then down the front of his body. “But there is something inside of you, Brandon.” She said, reaching out and putting a hand over his heart and looking Brandon  in the eyes. “Something….terrible has been growing inside of you for years. Something that Hovel…and Jacob need….”

Alarmed and surprised by the sudden mention of Jacobs name, Brandon shook his head.

He called his power the Flame….but he had always known that his power had another name. That the Flame….had some hidden meaning or purpose. It was a stranger in his body. Clawing. Creeping. Flowing with unimaginable strength….and urges across his soul.

 What was the Flame?

“Nora….what is it? What’s inside of me” Brandon asked her out loud, squeezing Nora’s hands so hard he was afraid he was hurting her.

Nora flinched and pulled away from him escaping his grasping hands. But she immediately answered his question.

“I don’t know.” She slowly replied looking away and balling up her fists beside her in frustration. “Only Hovel and Jacob know that answer….and possibly the other Alchemists as well.” Nora took a breath and looked up.

“I’ve tried to find the answers, so many times but…I’m only an Acolyte and so I am unworthy of the information. “ She scoffed, then frowned and put up a finger. “But I do know that something has changed lately.”

Getting an ominous feeling from this Brandon put a hand over his heart.

 “Changed?” He asked her.

Nora nodded. “Yes.” She replied. “Jacob said that the Procedures are going to end soon….so I can only assume that this means that Hovel is thinking of extracting the power from you….They are going to take whatever is inside of you away.” Nora stopped and Brandon nearly grabbed her by the shoulders and begged her to keep talking.

At the mention of the procedures ending, Brandon had felt a small sense of joy, but at the thought of the Flame somehow getting taken out of him….Brandon felt cold to the bone.

“Why would they do that!?” Brandon started to stammer and question. “What will happen to ME if they do that?” he asked her.

Nora shook her head helplessly and that just made Brandon feel colder.

“I…..I don’t know…” She slowly answered she sounded sad. Then with a small stamp of her foot Nora raised her chin, walked to Brandon’s side and put a hand on his back offering comfort. A moment later she rose her voice and said. “But I am NOT going to sit here and wait to find out.” Nora, put a hand on his face making him look her in the eyes once more. “Lil One, I showed you and told you all that I know. Now, Brandon….we have to leave this place.”

“But…” Brandon stopped as the objection fell from his lips.

No but’s.

Why would he argue with her? What was there holding him to his Fathers home?

Brandon wanted to leave. He didn’t want to be some plaything or Tool for his father and the Alchemists.

And yet one thing did make him hesitate. Looking at Nora Brandon said. “Um…What about Jacob…Can he come with us?”

“No Lil One….” Nora breathed and blinked, a tear ran down her cheek. She looked away, dashed the moister away, and said  “Jacob is one of them! He always has been. And I know he cares for you, but he is not going to protect you.” Nora wiped at her eyes when more tears continued to fall.

Seemingly unable to stop the tears, she decided to she keep talking through them. “I’m sorry, I wish things were different, but I want to take you away from this horrible place.” She finished sniffling heavily.

“But won’t you get into trouble Nora? Wont Hovel and the others be mad at you if you take me away?”” Brandon choked on an emotion, as he watched her cry.

He may have been confused and naive, but Brandon knew that they were doing and speaking about something that was going to endanger their lives. If it wasn’t dangerous…Nora wouldn’t have been so scared and sad.

Suddenly Nora smiled through her tears. “Dear boy…you’re worried about someone like me?” She laughed slightly on a hysterical edge, then she leaned over and placed a kiss to Brandon’s cheek. When she pulled back she looked him in the eyes and said. “I’ve spent years watching you suffer. I deserve to be punished for that. But I love you. And if you’ll let me…. Please….let me help you now.”

After that there wasn’t much more to say. Nora allowed Brandon to meditate on all that he had been told. They sat in the observation room, overlooking the Ghoul pit and for a long time neither of them spoke.

And in that time….Brandon imagined a life outside of the base with her. He imagined being free. Not living in the base.

The idea of continuing with the procedures and his daily feeding is what pushed Brandon over the edge.

He didn’t want to feed on people any more. IT was wrong.

But the Flame was always getting stronger then it was before. His mind and his body were not his own….He was a tool. A specimen. A monster.

Like a ton of bricks everything came home too hard…..too fast.

HE was being used. He was a means to an end. He was nothing to anyone. His life….was not his own but some twisted experiment that he had lived like a loyal dog.

With a small cry, Brandon covered his face, the black leather gloves that Nora had given him, smearing the tears that were pouring down his cheeks.

“Nora…Help me….I don’t want to do any of this anymore.” Brandon sobbed into his hands.

Wordlessly Nora embraced him….and after that the two began to plan their getaway.
