Chapter-

Nora and Jacob began to spend more and more time with him as time continued to pass.

They brought him books. Coached him in his reading and writing until he was able to speak easily and in lengthy conversation.

Nora often commented on Brandon’s intelligence…..saying that he was far too smart for his own good. And even though she did this in a joking manner….Brandon could sense that she was perhaps disturbed by this truth….as was Jacob.

Both he and Nora seemed too feel disquiet when he finished off one extensive volume only to pick up another, even longer, and more complex novel and begin reading it.

Brandon felt an odd hunger to learn. And yet…may of the things that he learned seemed more like Deja-vu then first time knowledge gained….

Still because this was the only thing that Brandon was allowed to be besides going to the Procedures….he tried to derive joy from every moment that he spent in the library. Weather it was with Jacob or Nora.

Today Brandon was with Nora.

His small care taker was sitting in one of the large high backed chairs, sitting next to him. The tall bookshelf’s packed with books stood like sentinels in the Library guarding silence and knowledge.

Brandon was sitting on the floor with a stack of books laid out all around him. HE was gazing at one particular picture in a nature book that made him fascinated….when an unfamiliar baritone cut through the silence making Brandon glance up from his books

“Acolyte….” The voice called form the glass door. When Brandon, looked he saw that there was a single male alchemist standing there in white robes with his hood up, covering most of his nameless face, except for his lips and chin…which were the color of wheat. “The Grand Master has requested you to appear before him tomorrow morning.” The nameless man called.

Nora who was focusing on her work, glanced up at the Alchemists only for a second before she looked back down.  “Message received.” Nora softly replied before turning her face back to her papers and continuing to write in the books. “Tell the Grand Master that I will report as instructed.”

The nameless Man in White robe nodded his head, before turning and disappearing back, possibly to report to his father….or do whatever the alchemists did in their spare time.

Once the man was gone the silent scratch of pen to paper filled the library, but a niggling question suddenly rose up in Brandon’s mind. So Brandon stood up from the floor, walked to the table and tapped Nora’s arm, sliding in beside her chairs so that he could stare at her face.

“Nora… what is an acolyte?” he softly asked her.

“Well, you see the men in the White robes are Alchemists….” Nora swiftly outlined, but her words were almost mumbled as she continued to write in her book, with intent. “Your father Hovel is the head of this Organization. Our Grand Master is the most learned in the ways of Alchemy and anyone that learns Alchemy ears the right to be an Alchemist…I am still a student.”

Nora stopped and then started again. “Now Lil One, I’m very busy….please go back to your studies and let me work.” Nora softly told him, even though her face remained turned towards the book the entire time that she spoke.

Unable to obey her as her words only made him more curious Brandon opened his mouth and spit out the next question. Which rose up with no control or hesitation. “What’s Alchemy, Nora?”

A small smile touched Nora’s face as if she knew he would not leave her in peace and without looking up she took a moment to answer his second question. “The most basic wat to explain it to you would be the conversion of something into another form. Nora softly explained, before scribbling a few lines of script and then looking up at Brandon directly.

“So is it like when water turns to steam?” Brandon asked her next. He had learned about water changing forms from watching Nora prepare his food…and form reading a few simple science books.

“No…. What an Alchemist does is change the very fundamentals of what an item is and can be.” Nora explained in a short manner that left Brandon lost.

“I don’t understand.” he told her simply. Then he tilted his head to the side and watched a small understanding look cross her face, before Nora leaned on the best and started speaking again.

“Well….lets me explain it this way.” Nora slowly told him. Her small mouth curled up into a happy smile as she spoke. “All thigs on this planet are a part of energy….or created by different energy’s putting pressure on each other.”

“Okay….” Brandon said, still feeling lost, but choosing not to dwell on it. “But if you’re a part of the Organization like the other Alchemists, why don’t you dress in White Robes? Why do they call you an Acolyte?” Nora said rounding back to the original topic.

With a flick of wrist Nora dashed her braid across her shoulder and released a deep and it wistful sigh. “I am not good with the Alchemic part. I can’t use Alchemy on even half the scale that your father can. So I am an Acolyte. Something like a scribe or foot solider. I have basic tools at my disposal. I’m good with animals and nature, but I can’t do much else.”

It was the first time that Brandon had ever seen Nora’s hands glowing with the black lights that were used to dismember him in his daily procedures.

Without any further words Brandon jumped up from the table and walked to a corner, where he cracked open one of the many books that were stacked there

A few long moment of silence passed, then Brandon looked up from the picture book in his lap.

“Nora, Can we see some of these?”

“One of what?”  Nora sked his softly, glancing up from her

“Plants…” Brandon replied. “But I’ve never seen one. In fact I’ve never even seen the sky. I know one exists because I’ve read about it, but….” Brandon trailed off as he lowered the book and turned it about so that he could look at the picture he was showing her.

It was simple image of a large field of yellow Sun flowers, beneath a blue and orange sky.

It was generic, but to Brandon it was the single most fascinating thing he had ever seen.

Brandon didn’t have to  look up to feel Nora’s eyes on him. She watched him silently for a long moment before she put down her own book, stood up and crossed to Brandon’s corner. With a small exhale she kneeled down in front of him before reaching out and gently taking the book in his hands from him.  She glanced at the picture before closing the book and capturing Brandon’s eyes with her own.

“Do you want to?” She softly asked after silently watching Brandon for a moment. “Do you want to see the sky Brandon?”

The answer jumped strait from Brandon’s heart to his lips. “Yes.” He answered softly.

Nora smiled a big kind excited smile and put out her hand to him saying. “Let’s go.”

Brandon took her hand and Nora began to walk out of the room. She stopped only long enough to put in a code that made the white wall crack open and slid back revealing the hallway. “There is a place where you can see the sky for real.” Nora softly explained, then she was pulling Brandon behind her down a new hallway that he had never seen before.

The walls were still featureless and white, but the way that the halls twisted and turned beneath his feet, were something new and exciting.

Brandon was dashing behind Nora when they hit a sudden left turn and nearly run down a single female in White robes, who was also dashing in the opposite direction with an arm full of papers.

It wasn’t odd to see such a sight.

Brandon was used to seeing Alchemists in White Robes running about the Hallways of his father home at all hours of the day.

“Acolyte…” The female Alchemists asked, with a swish of White robes and long blond hair, she spun around in the hall and locked mean black eyes on Brandon and Nora….as if she saw something she both feared and detested. “Where are you going? Does the Grand Master know what you’re doing with that thing outside of its room?

With a cold glare and a steel command in her voice that Brandon had never seen Nora affect she pulled Brandon closer to her side and said. “Leave us be. The boy needs some air. I will be sure to return him. The Grand Master has permitted this. Now leave.”

Nora didn’t wait for the blond hair’d Alchemist to respond, she simply pulled Brandon down the hall….

Once the angry face of the female Alchemist was far behind them Brandon softly asked.  “Nora….My father doesn’t know that you’re taking me to see the sky does he?”

“Nope.” Nora simply replied, not looking back or stopping.

As her response registered Brandon felt a sharp shiver of apprehension and glee swirl down inside of him. It was an odd mix, but even knowing that he was doing something that Hovel didn’t know about…Brandon had the odd urge to laugh.
