CHAPTER FIFTY – Escape

Flawless victory in sight, Kirk tried not to draw too much attention to himself.  He walked with a brisk gait on the lower floor of the busy convention center heading in the direction of the loading dock.  In his arms, he carried the prize; the one woman, who dared defy him.  Michelle Cartwright belonged to him in his arms at long last.

The naughty girl remained the sole focus of his depraved desires for weeks in missing her like he did, craving the taste of her, hearing her screams as he conquered her body and bent her to his will.  Weeks Kirk intended for them to make up in every way that suited him, using her every hole and making it his own as soon as he could get out of this place!

Once hitting the road, Michelle and he would disappear where no one might find them.  Dense in forests protected by the government, Oregon still boasted some remote areas untouched by man.  An avid hunter taught by his father since a young boy; Kirk mastered the less traveled trails leading to these unpopulated areas.  Further, he knew how to survive off the land.  Michelle would be all his away from civilization, and there would be nothing that she or anyone could do about it.

“You’re all mine now,” Kirk breathed with his smug smile.

Since that incredible night of her punishment for her insolence in believing that anything was over between them, all he wanted was a repeat performance.  Holding her now, Kirk comprehended that his patience would grant him everything he wanted.  Now he would prove to Michelle how good it could be between them if she would only comply.  However, at every turn, that damned bodyguard of hers ruined any chance of him getting near her except today.

Since finding out about the masquerade gala put on by Michelle’s charity, Kirk planned well for any contingency and especially that bastard who followed her like a shadow.  The bodyguard proved quick but not quick enough.  From the last altercation with the man, Kirk could not underestimate the bodyguard.  The man failed to avoid his stun gun or the stab of his switchblade that followed to make sure he stayed down.

The shocked look in the bodyguard’s eyes was priceless and so fucking worth it!  Kirk wished that he had more time to gut the pig properly for all his interference.  Regardless, the bodyguard finally understood who he dealt with was no amateur and learned well from his previous mistakes at their engagement.

A few people glared at him with concern.  Kirk clutched his prize protectively to him.  None came after him.  None would dare!  Michelle was his!  He would die to keep her.

“Kirk!” Hunter yelled from far down the wide corridor while avoiding foot traffic gawking at him.

So, one of Michelle’s meddling brothers pursued after all.  Damn!  Kirk should have guessed as much.  He did not acknowledge who called him but moved all the faster toward the back of the loading area where his car waited.  On his key fob, he pressed the remote start to get it running.  It would be close as he could hear the pounding footsteps gaining on his position.

Kirk kicked the back door open in his haste and panted hard.  His eyes widened in alarm when he saw a big black man in a suit holding a semi-automatic handgun on him.  Without hesitation in his forward momentum, he kicked the gun out of the bodyguard’s hand.  Kirk gave the big man a taste of his stun gun as well.

This only seemed to piss the black man off though as he grunted alone unfazed otherwise.  Yavin moved forward with an angry sneer and growl.  Worried dark eyebrows knit in disbelief while Kirk triggered the taser three more times, which finally put the black man down on his knees shaking without control from the heightened voltage shocking his body.

Kirk dashed to his car near and shoved Michelle in the back seat.  Running to the driver’s seat, he reached the handle of the door and opened it when he heard his name called.  The man from before caught up with them as he burst through the back door.  In a full sprint, the same man slid across the front of the hood of Kirk’s unmarked Charger.  The man kicked the driver’s door out of Kirk’s stunned hands before he could climb in.

“You’re not going anywhere with my sister!” Michelle’s brother roared and immediately flung a punch at Kirk but missed.

Kirk sidestepped the attack but struck the elder Cartwright brother to the stomach.  Hunter grunted at the blow by the bigger man but managed to grab him by the lapels of his tuxedo jacket.  Kirk twisted away from his assailant’s hold but countered by catching his thick bicep around Hunter’s throat in a chokehold.

Kirk's muscular arm flexed to close off any hope of air reaching Hunter's lungs.  Acting fast while gasping for breath, he stepped behind Kirk’s leg.  Hunter kicked the bigger man behind the knee, causing it to buckle, grabbed the elbow of the choking arm, and twisted Kirk’s wrist of the same arm away from him in one smooth motion.  With a shout, Kirk toppled to his knee when Michelle’s brother jabbed him twice to the side of his face with his free fist.  Kirk jumped up to his feet in an open palm strike under his assailant’s chin, which jarred Hunter back.

The bigger man caught him in the stomach but with his knee delivering the blow.  Hunter grunted but aimed new jabs at Kirk’s kidneys and shoved the bigger man against the taupe Charger in a tackle and shout.  Kirk reached for his switchblade from his pocket still stained with the blood of his last victim.  He swung it in a fierce arc at Hunter who leaped away from his each subsequent adept swipe.

“There!  The douche’s over there!” the other Cartwright brother shouted as he rushed through the back door with Michelle's bodyguard Scully and best friend Sophie in tow.

Scully snatched opened the car door and pulled Miss Cartwright’s limp body from it.  When the door opened, it distracted Kirk enough to stare in that direction.  Hunter took full advantage and attacked the man’s knife hand.  He forced it against the car once and then twice more before Kirk released the weapon with an enraged shout.

The bigger man hooked a punch to Hunter's kidneys before kneeing him to the crotch, which forced the older brother to kneel with a grunt.  Kirk pulled a 9 mm gun from behind him and aimed it at the pesky bodyguard he stabbed earlier who dared to carry Michelle away from him.  Dammit, he should have finished the job when he had the chance, but only sought to get away as fast as he could with his woman.

“Stop, you ass!  Bring her back!  Now!” Kirk roared in his wrath.  He fired off a round above the bodyguard’s head.

With his hands up, the other Cartwright brother Evan crept to the other side of the Charger where Hunter and Kirk stood.  Looking enraged at the bigger man before him with unruly dark hair, Evan spat at Kirk’s feet.  His azure eyes met the pale green of his brother who breathed laboriously but gave the big man a good fight so far.  Hunter slowly straightened on his feet with deadly intent in his pale green eyes.

“Stop, I said!  She’s mine!” Kirk roared with spittle flying from his mouth toward Scully who ignored him and continued walking away.

Evan shook his head at his brother and glared at their armed opponent.  He leaped for Kirk to Hunter’s disbelief at how fast his brother moved.  Kirk shifted his attention from Scully who escaped with his prize back inside the convention center to the more immediate threat.  Kirk’s gun went off before Evan could deflect the gun hand that aimed the weapon at him away from his body.

“Evan!” Sophie, who peeked around the car once the gun was produced, yelled in her anxiousness over her boyfriend's stupidly brave actions.  In her shock and worry, she stood trying to reach him.  She stopped short with bulging eyes and a jump when the second shot rang off.

Hunter lunged at Kirk a second later just as the bigger man whipped around to face him while aiming.  The older brother tackled the bigger man to the ground when Kirk fired a third shot.  It struck its target tearing through flesh, but full of adrenaline Hunter still managed to slam the gun out of Kirk’s hand.

"You'll never hurt her again!" Michelle’s brother proceeded to bash Kirk’s head into the ground while pressing his thumbs into Kirk’s eyes.

“Ahhh!  Fucking bastard!” The bigger man bellowed at Hunter while he attempted to break the man’s hold from inside his arms.  Kirk couldn’t for it felt like two bands of steel.  He struggled to get his legs wrapped around Hunter’s arms instead.  He rolled to break the hold, managing with success to pin Hunter to the ground.

Michelle's older brother growled, "Is that all you've got?"

Hunter punched Kirk's groin exposed to him.  This loosened the bigger man’s hold enough for Hunter to scissor his own powerful legs around Kirk’s throat.  He squeezed with a grunt, watching Michelle’s ex flay and flush red in his toil to breathe no matter which way he turned.  Hunter moved with him but refused to release his devastating hold.

“Hunter, no!” Sophie cried as she hurried toward him since the fight in Kirk died.  The bigger man turned a bruised red to purple with his brown eyes rolling to the back of his head.  “Please!  Stop!” she begged in horror when Hunter stared back at her with ferocity in his pale eyes.

After a moment to contemplate his actions, Hunter released Kirk and struggled to his feet.  Sophie gave aid by grabbing one of his arms and pulled him up with relief.  In standing the oldest Cartwright sibling to his feet, she released her hold with a nod of pride at him actually curbing his temper.

His infuriated eyes remained fixed down at the asswipe who thought to hurt his sister and offered one last brutal kick to Kirk's ribs.  Hunter tried his best to slow the breath that rushed from him when his eye strayed to where Sophie leaped to next.  She kneeled before Evan who managed to lean himself beside the back tire of the Charger.  Concern filled her eyes with tears.  His brother blanched as he stared at Sophie with his blood staining his abdomen and spreading across his white dress shirt.  Hunter stumbled to her side with the bombshell knowledge.

“No, no, no!” she babbled in trying to catch the blood with her hands when she looked helplessly at Hunter in her fear.

Hunter joined her hands to help slow the blood flow.  Evan cried out in the pain it caused him.  Hunter stroked his curly hair out of his pasty sweating face as tears stood in his own eyes.  “Be still,” he ordered hoarsely.

Evan grabbed Sophie and then Hunter’s arm.  “Sorry,” he breathed with a grimace.

Sophie shook her head in the finality of that one word.  “No, me.  I’m so sorry.”

“Me, too,” Hunter said gruffly, “But, you gotta give me time to make it up to you, lil bro.”

Evan shook his head when the tears slipped from his azure eyes when he blinked.  He could hear the ambulance and police cars coming, but they sounded far off.  He stared beyond them at Kirk who rose up with what looked to be a gun in his hand again.  Evan’s eyes widened with fear at the menace on the bigger man’s face.

Two shots rang out sounding like one, but they seemed to come from two different directions.  Both struck their mark.  One for the head, which caused Kirk to jerk to the left side and the other for the heart, rocked him back.  He collapsed on the ground without further movement save the blood oozing from his wounds, puddling beneath him, as the police moved in on the scene.

“Stay with me, E!” Hunter ordered his younger brother.  He stared into his azure eyes that glossed over.

“Put the guns on the ground!” commanded a uniformed Seapoint police officer when he and his partner entered the docking area with their guns at the ready.  Sophie looked up startled to see Yavin with a gun holding the handle by this thumb and index finger.  As slow as possible, the black man placed the weapon on the ground with his hands up in the same moment Scully also made similar movements with his own handgun.  She stared wide-eyed for she had no idea the security detail Hunter hired as drivers carried firearms.

The police came and took the security guards roughly where they were cuffed.  In calm tones the bodyguards explained the situation and the reason behind their use of deadly force.  Other police officers entered the scene to assist.

“Help!  Please help us!” Sophie shouted in a panic before she stared back down at the curly haired Cartwright brother.  “Evan!  Open your eyes!”

For a second he did, but his eyes fluttered closed again.

Hunter shouted and looked around at all the officers swarming the area, “We need a medic here!”

One officer approached Kirk and kicked his gun away from him as he tested for a pulse at his neck before he moved forward to Sophie, Hunter, and Evan.  “Clear!” the uniformed officer yelled.  Another called dispatch over his radio for the paramedics to come.
