No Going Back
“Say farewell to the dark of night
I see the coming of the sun
I feel like a little child
Whose life has just begun
You came and breathed new life
Into this lonely heart of mine
You threw out the life line
Just in the Nick of Time.”
- Back At One, BRIAN MCKNIGHT
“Did you think I was kidding?” Jonah dipped the wash cloth in the bowl of warm water then wrung it out. Noble gazed silently at his handsome face, everything about the man had him mesmerized. Where did you come from? The question danced through his head as he recalled how such a short time ago he’d been set on a different path that would have led him so far away from this right here. And then suddenly, Jonah was there, disrupting his plans, his life, his beliefs, tearing everything down to its foundations. Oh but he was doing a beautiful job at building it all back up, so much stronger than before.
“I guess I should learn to take you at your word.” Noble murmured, smiling softly. His breath hitched when Jonah touched the warm wet cloth to his stomach and began to gently wash away the evidence of their recent love making. Even if they hadn’t went all the way, Noble understood that everything they did together was love making.
Jonah nodded and rinsed out the cloth then carefully wiped away the deposits that clung to Noble’s bandage. “You should, definitely.” He washed the bandage a bit more. “Sorry about that, didn’t mean to soil your bandages.”
“No real harm done.” Noble covered his hand with his own, and Jonah paused, the cloth pressed against Noble’s chest. “It was worth it anyway.”
An extended whimpering moan sifted out of Jonah and he leaned down, kissing Noble’s lips. “Please tell me you’re a fast healer.” He dropped his head to Noble’s chest and whimpered again. “If you take too long to get better, you make have a crazy man on your hands.”
Chuckling low, Noble murmured, “I think I already do.”
“True.” Jonah groaned and exhaled an agonized laugh. “So you’ll have a crazier man on your hands.”
Noble combed his fingers slowly through Jonah’s soft black hair, the ebony strands lifting and falling gently, then kissed his head. “I’ll heal as fast as I can, baby.” He whispered. “I promise.”
Lifting his head, a real agony reflected back from Jonah’s violet eyes. “I’ll do everything in my power to help you as well. You won’t have to lift a finger. You just lay here and get better, I’ll take care of all your needs.”
Noble smiled. “All of them?”
“All.” Jonah confirmed and kissed him once more. “But we should take it easy. The less exertion you put forth, the more quickly you will heal. And once you’re as good as new…we’ll make up for time lost.”
“How will we make up for it?” Noble rubbed his hands up Jonah’s arms. The man’s pants were back on, but his torso remained bare.
“You’re really not helping, you know.” Jonah chuckled then leaned down and rested on his elbows on either side of his chest and kissed him slowly, thoroughly, moaning as Noble’s tongue slipped into his mouth, wrapped around his tongue and sucked sensually.
I bet you taste so damn good, baby. Noble actually began to salivate at the thought of taking Jonah into his mouth. Being inside Jonah’s mouth was out of this world ecstasy, and he wanted to do for Jonah what the man did for him. He only hoped he could do it as well.
Jonah finally drew back and Noble panted softly, “So you want me to stop?”
“Hell no.” Jonah grinned and shook his head. “I’ll deal.” He rinsed out the cloth again and rubbed it slowly down between Noble’s thighs, washing all around his stiff erection and lower, cleansing his balls with deliberate thoroughness. He smiled when Noble’s breath went static and his hips flinched. “Feel good, baby?” he murmured.
“Yeeess.” Noble choked on a whimper and squeezed the blankets in his fists.
“And how about this?” He wrapped the warm wet cloth around Noble’s hard shaft and stroked up and down the full length. His hips jerked harder, cock jumping, hardening, stretching.
“Mm-Hmm!” His lips pressed tight, his body aching to respond, move, thrust. A hard breath escaped him and he panted unsteadily. “How am I supposed to take it easy when you do stuff like this?”
Jonah smiled. “You want me to stop?”
“Hell no.” Noble laughed low.
“That’s what I like to hear.” Jonah said quietly then bent down and kissed the tip of Noble’s cock head that peeked through the wash cloth. Noble gasped and flinched hard, then whimpered as a pain shot through his ribs. Lifting up, instant concern shadowed Jonah’s eyes. “I’m sorry, baby. I’m not being very careful, am I?”
“Don’t ever apologize for what you do to me with your mouth.” Noble smiled, but his face pinched as the pain began to creep back in, little by little.
Jonah dropped the wash cloth in the bowl and covered Noble’s nude body with the sheet and blankets. “Let me get you a glass of water and you can take your pain medication.” He left the room and returned a few minutes later with the water and set it on the night stand. He retrieved the bottle of pain killers from Noble’s jacket, read the directions on the label then opened it and gave Noble one of the pills. “These should help you sleep as well.” He slid his arm behind Noble’s shoulders and lifted him up enough for him to swallow the pill, then laid him back down gently. “Does it hurt a lot?”
“Starting to.” Noble whispered tightly. “But the medication should help.”
“This is my fault.” Jonah said quietly, regretfully. “I shouldn’t have gotten you so worked up.”
Noble smiled and shook his head. “It isn’t your fault.” He insisted and rubbed his hand along Jonah’s forearm. “It wouldn’t matter if I just laid here and did nothing, the pain would still come. It’s inevitable when you have cracked ribs. And you weren’t the one who cracked them.”
The rage seeped back into Jonah’s eyes. He caressed his fingers down Noble’s cheek. “I still want to put him in the ground for doing this to you.” He kissed him softly. “For everything he’s ever done to you.” The doorbell rang and Jonah glanced up, then dropped one more kiss on Noble’s lips. “I’ll be right back.” He smiled and winked. “Don’t go anywhere.”
“Yeah.” Noble moaned, a pained smile on his face. “I’m really going to jump up and run off.”
“Well at least I don’t have that to worry about then.” Jonah chuckled then left the bedroom.
“Dad.” Jonah was surprised to see the man back out there that same day. He had an undecipherable look on his face and Jonah asked, “Is everything okay?”
He sighed. “I guess it depends on how you look at it.”
“Excuse me?” Jonah frowned. “What do you mean?”
Mason glanced past him into the house. “I didn’t…interrupt anything, did I?”
“No.” Jonah chuckled. “Now if you had shown up just a short while ago…”
“Okay, okay.” Mason held up his hand, smiling. “No oversharing.”
Jonah stepped back, laughing softly. “Come in.”
“I’m assuming you’re taking good care of your patient?” Mason inquired when they walked into the kitchen.
“Oh yes.” Jonah smirked. “Seeing to all his…needs.”
“I bet.” Mason mumbled, then chuckled. “Just don’t…overdo anything. He needs time to heal.”
“Tell him that.” Jonah arched an eyebrow and grinned. “He isn’t the innocent boy he’s got you all duped into believing he is. Uh-uh.”
Mason laughed and shook his head. “Somehow I’m not surprised.” He sighed and gazed at Jonah warmly, lovingly. “You were the best thing for him, you know that? I’m not sure anyone else could have set him free so completely.”
“It’s amazing…seeing him this way.” Jonah smiled, real love warming his heart. “He’s funny, and witty, and cocky…open about how he feels. Such a contrast to how he was before.” He looked at his dad. “I mean, looking at him before…all I saw in his eyes was a man in torment. But now…its just…” He shrugged and pressed his lips tight, throat squeezing. “It’s beautiful, dad. He is beautiful. Everything about him. Sometimes it feels like my heart will explode, I love him so much.” He rubbed his hand over his mouth and cleared his throat. “I can’t even begin to put it into words.”
“I’m glad…that you found each other.” He said quietly. “And that you finally let someone back in again. I was starting to worry that you never would.”
Jonah sighed and swallowed thickly. “So was I.” He shook his head. “I mean, after losing Patrick…I didn’t know how bad a person could hurt. So many nights after that…” His eyes stung as he recalled too vividly the anguish of Patrick’s loss. “I just laid there in the dark and wished I had died with him.” He met his dad’s eyes. “I never thought about doing it. I would’ve never did that to you. But I still wished at times to just be…gone. Be with Patrick. It hurt so…fucking bad.”
“I know, son.” Mason voice strained with emotion. “And next to the anguish of such a loss, I think the worst thing ever is watching your child suffer and not be able to do anything to help them.”
“But you did help me, dad.” He smiled, eyes damp. “If I’d had shitty parents, who’s to say I wouldn’t have followed Patrick? But there’s no way I would have put you through that.”
“For that I’m grateful.” Mason said. “I couldn’t have handled that.”
Jonah cleared his throat and smiled, “How did we get on this subject?”
“I don’t know.” Mason chuckled and rubbed his mouth, a dampness to his eyes.
“Was there a reason you came back out here today?”
Mason nodded. “Actually there was.” He licked his lips slowly. “It’s about Rebecca.”
Uncertainty filled his eyes; he didn’t really anticipate any more trouble from Rebecca, all things considered. But one never knew. “What now?”
His lips stretching tight, Mason arched one eyebrow and smiled, “You won’t believe it.”
Huddled in the corner of the bunk of the small, dank cell, Rebecca hugged her knees to her chest, face pressed down into her arms. Her hand throbbed like crazy but she didn’t regret hitting the bitch. How could a mother turn her back on her own child? Just look away and close her ears to his cries? She tried to hold the images at bay but couldn’t seem to stop them from shoving in; Noble as young boy, abused for being…gay.
Are you any better than his dad? In your own way, didn’t you punish him too? Hurt him with your words…everything?
Tears formed and seeped into the sleeves of her shirt. You deserve to have someone like Jonah. Someone who can love you for the amazing man you are…and not expect you to be someone else. She sniffed then choked on a quiet sob. Maybe she deserved to be in jail – not for hitting Tessa…but for what she’d done to Noble. Would he even speak to her ever again? Would Jonah? His words had cut her deep and she knew they were meant to; he didn’t believe there was anything good in her anymore. And why should he? Maybe there wasn’t. Next to Keith, Jonah had been her best friend back then. She had thrown them both away. A part of her she’d kept hidden for so long…had always hoped she and Jonah could find their way back to each other. She didn’t even venture into that territory where Keith was concerned; he was gone forever. And now…Jonah was too-
“Are you sure we’re not blood related?”
Rebecca’s head jerked up as she swallowed hard. Her vision was blurry and she wiped at her eyes with a shaky hand. Jonah stood at the cell door, arms resting lazily on the crossbar, face pressed lightly against the vertical bars. A smile corked the corner of his lips. “’Cause from what I hear…we share the same vicious right hook.”
