My problem is my night sweats.

My problem is my night sweats. Every night I change my sheet, duvet cover, pillow cases, for fresh, bathe, go to bed. The sweats begin in the wee hours of the morning, emanating in my scalp, armholes, crotch, behind my curled-up knees. Then, insidiously, they spread, my saline body fluids accumulating, profuse damp patches in the small of my back, on the soft undersides of my breasts, the cleft between my buttocks. By dreamtime my sheet and duvet are saturated, soaking wet with sweat, my pillows full of teak from my dripping hair, my colourant.

I always have the same dream. In my dream, I go to the cinema where I am shown to my bed just as the film starts. Annoyed that there’s never a screen to watch, just a portable hi-fi speaker to listen to, I invariably complain to the usher. The usher sells virtual programmes before the show, ice cream tubs (strawberry sundae, raspberry ripple, chocolate nut n nougat) at the interval, wake-up calls in the early hours. He calls the assistant manager. The assistant manager, mind, and usher are natural pigments resembling, but darker than ochre, dark yellowish-brown in colour (raw umber usher), dark brown when roasted (burnt umber assistant manager), shadow people, figments of my twisted imagination. In dreamtime, the assistant manager’s role is to pass me a handful of faded Scrabble tiles and wheel my bed to the second cinema where the screen prompts me to wake up.

I wake at three, pouring with night sweat from every pore, thoroughly soaked, writhing in discomfort on the sodden sheet, my duvet kicked off the end of the bed, pillows on the floor, my quivering voice shaking me to my senses:

‘I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it!’

I get up, strip off my sheet, duvet, pillow cases, bathe, go to the kitchen, leaving my bed to dry. My night-time snack never changes: one-third wedge of sweating, blue-veined Danish cheese, healthy curls of unsalted butter, three rye crackers, a chocolate nut n nougat sundae, a mug of milky mint tea. At night, I change my sheet, duvet cover, pillow cases for fresh, bathe, go to bed. My problem is my night sweats!!
