Shades of Black

From yellows in a crayon box, I drew a

Waning sun. Then distant fields of golden,

Wheat and variegated serpents. Who dreamed

In black and drank, the souls of fathers lost

In war, and waited in the knee-high rye

To watch the mother's babe. So fast upon

Those swollen breasts that sigh it could not hear,

Nor sense its mother's taffeta dress nor

Feel her scorn, her maker.  And yearn again,

So hard she clung to Sappho's ancient cliffs,

And dove into the blinding spray to sink

Beneath Aegean waves.
