When Sindy woke the next morning, Nick wasn’t in the bed next to her. The house was silent. She glanced at the bedside clock. “Oh, crap.” She muttered; it was 2.15pm. She’d never slept that late before. Scanning the bedroom for her clothes, she couldn’t see them. Swinging her legs off the bed, she slipped on Nick’s dressing gown and ran downstairs.

As she entered the living room, she noticed her clothes folded up on the sofa with a note from Nick saying he’d gone to work, and he’d be back home about half seven.

Sindy dressed, made herself a coffee, and turned her mobile on.  She sat on the sofa with her head in her hands feeling confused about the past few days. Ever since she had known Nick, she’d always thought he was good-looking but disliked him because of how arrogant he was. Sindy’s heart sunk, she couldn’t believe how stupid she’d been with fucking him, then staying overnight at his house. She wished she could turn the clock back; she didn’t want to be another notch on his bedpost.

Taking a sip of her coffee, she gazed around the room, wondering what to do next. Her mobile began bleeping, alerting her to text messages. Sindy scrolled through her texts, they were just from her friends. There were none from her family, they hadn’t noticed that she wasn’t home last night.

Tears welled in her eyes, she’d had enough of being used and feeling unwanted. She wanted to phone her probation officer to ask if he could find her a hostel somewhere out of the city to live so she could have a fresh start, but she didn’t have any credit on her mobile.

Slipping her jacket on, Sindy decided to walk into the city and go to Roger's office to ask him about the hostel when she noticed Nick had a landline. When she phoned the probation office, Roger’s assistant told her that he was off for the rest of the week.

Feeling downhearted, Sindy left Nick’s house and began the hour walk home. It was freezing outside. Holding her jacket tight around her neck, it felt like it was taking forever to get home. Wearing a short skirt, vest t-shirt, and a summer jacket while everyone walking past her were wearing thick winter coats, boots, and jeans, Sindy began to feel even lower about her life. She couldn’t afford things like that.

When Sindy finally arrived home, she made herself a coffee and stood shivering in front of the small electric fire, trying to get warm. She thought no one was home until she heard someone running down the stairs.

Her brother Kev barged into the living room. “Where’ve you been!” He cried, glaring at her.

“I was at an all-night party.” She lied. “Why?”

“We needed you last night!” Kev growled slamming the door behind him.

“What for?” She mumbled glaring at her tall dark-haired brother. She hated him with a passion.

“Chris phoned, he needed you to take Dave Kristin’s gear to him, your gonna have to take it tonight now.”

Sindy suddenly felt sick as she plonked herself on the sofa. Dave Kristin was a perv who always tried to touch her up whenever she saw him. “I’m not doing it.” She mumbled, knowing Kev wouldn’t be happy with what she’d just said, but she didn’t care.

“You fucking are!” Kev hissed slapping her around her head, making her spill her coffee over her. “You know Dave prefers you to deliver his gear, not Chris.”

Sindy watched the coffee trickle down her legs. Her bottom lip began to tremble. She didn’t want to cry in front of her brother. She had to stay tough. Sindy jumped up off the sofa. “I’m not doing it!” She cried punching him in the chest. “You go and get ya arse felt for a change!”

Kev slapped her hard around the face. Sindy fell back on the sofa holding her face. She glared at him as she licked the blood off her split lip. Kev leaned over her. “You will do as your fucking told bitch.” He snarled poking his finger in her face.

Sindy slyly smiled. “Ok.” She sweetly said bending her leg, then swiftly kicked him in the balls.

Kev let out a loud groan as he doubled over in pain with his hands between his legs. Sindy’s heart thudded in her chest as she scrambled off the sofa and ran upstairs to her bedroom. All she could hear was Kev screaming and swearing at her. Sindy ran into her small bedroom and pushed her wardrobe in front of the bedroom door, then wedged her bed between the wall and the wardrobe. Kev thundered up the stairs screaming obscenities at her. Sindy curled up on her bed with her hands over her ears as Kev tried to smash his way into her bedroom.

Eventually, Kev realized, she’d barricaded herself in. “Chris is coming home tomorrow!” He bellowed hammering the door with his fist. “I’ll let him deal with you!” He laughed walking away.

Sindy was terrified, she had no choice now but to run. Chris would not be happy that she’d refused to deliver the drugs to Dave Kristen; he was Chris’s best customer. Changing into her jeans and trainers, she slipped on her only jumper and found her old school bag. Managing to put a few t-shirts, her makeup, and underwear in it, Sindy tied her hair back and sat by the bedroom window waiting for it to go dark.

At just gone seven o clock, all Sindy’s brothers and her parents were downstairs. All afternoon she’d heard their conversation. They’d purposely left the living room door open and spoke loudly so she could hear them. They were slagging her off for not doing the drugs run and laughing about Chris returning home the next day. Many times Sindy had planned to run away but she’d never gone through with it, but now, she’d never felt as scared as what she did right then. It made her more determined to run.

Sindy’s heart thudded in her chest as she threw her quilt out of her bedroom window onto the porch roof to muffle the sound of her landing on it. Climbing backward out of her bedroom window, she hung from the sill and dropped herself onto the porch roof, then jumped off it onto the grass.

Sindy had never run so fast in her life as she made her way out of the street, she thought her lungs were going to explode.

Finally making her way to the city, Sindy sat on a bench by the local park and shivered. The sweat on her body from running had begun to go cold. Bringing her knees up to her chest, she pulled her jumper over them to try and keep a little warmer. Tears streamed down her face, she couldn’t believe that the first time she’d ever phoned her probation officer to ask for help, he wasn’t in. Until he returned to work the next week, she had no one that could help her. She didn’t know how she was going to survive sleeping outside, the weather was freezing. She couldn’t stay at any of her friend’s houses because her family would find her. Sindy dropped her head onto her knees and began to sob, she had never felt so low in her life.

Her mobile began to ring, she took it out of her pocket, no name was showing it was an unknown number.

“Hello,” Sindy answered.

“Where are you?” Nick’s deep voice rumbled in her ear.

“How did you get my number?” She mumbled.

“I got it off your mobile this morning before I went to work.” He answered.

“What do you want Nick?” She coldly asked.

“I was wondering if you were coming here again tonight. I’ve got.”

“Don’t worry.” Sindy interrupted. “I won’t be coming to your house, so the coast is clear for you and your new fuck.” She snapped, cutting the call.

Nick rang her back straight away. “What was that about?” He cried when she answered her mobile.

“It’s ok Nick, you don’t have to check on me to see where I am. I won’t be coming yours again so you can get on with your life now can’t you!”

“What!” Nick gasped. “I was phoning to ask if you were coming here tonight because I’ve got something for you.”

Sindy went silent, she didn’t know what to say.

“Where are you?” Nick asked.

Sindy didn’t answer.

“Sin where are you?”

Tears began to trickle down her cheeks. “I’m nowhere.”

Nick sensed there was something wrong. “Sin, tell me where you are, and I’ll come and get you.”

Sindy didn’t answer.

“Tell me where you are now!” He ordered.

Sindy huffed a little laugh. “Calm down Nick, anyone would think you care about me.” She sniffled.

“Sin, tell me where you are.” He paused for a second. “Please.”

Sindy sighed. “I’m on the bench by the main entrance to the city park.” She cut the call and curled up on the bench shivering. She began to feel lightheaded; she hadn’t eaten all day. Tears trickled down Sindy’s face as she gazed at the Christmas lights hung across the street brightly twinkling against the night sky, they looked so pretty.

A few minutes later, a black Corsa parked in front of her. The large figure of Nick climbed out of his car. Sindy’s heart began to race as he walked towards her; she was too weak to move. Nick didn’t speak, he just picked her up, carried her to his car, lay her on the back seat, and drove away. With the warmth of the car and the gentle rocking motion, Sindy slowly fell asleep.

Sindy woke up a couple of hours later on Nick’s sofa. She tried to sit up but felt dizzy and flopped backward, holding onto her head.

Nick came out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a small towel. “At last your awake. Would you like a drink?”

Sindy nodded. “Coffee with loads of sugar in please, I need something to boost my energy.”

“I’ll make you a sandwich.” He said walking back into the kitchen.

Sindy stared at the ceiling. Tears welled in her eyes as she stressed over her situation. Maybe she had been a bit too hasty running away. Chris had hit her before, and she’d survived. She should have waited for her probation officer to return; it was only a few days away.

“Hey.” Nick’s voice snapped Sindy out of her thoughts as he placed a sandwich and mug of coffee on the small table in front of her. “Do you feel better now you’ve slept?” He asked, helping her to sit up.

“A little.” She sighed taking one of the sandwiches off the plate.

Nick sat on the sofa next to her watching her devour her sandwich. “Did you go home when you left here today?” He asked.

Sindy nodded as she gulped her coffee. “Yeah.”

“Who gave you the split lip?” He curiously asked.

Sindy stopped eating and stared across the room. “Kev.” She whispered.

Nick’s jaw clenched. He despised Kev; he was the nastiest one in her family. “Why?”

“It doesn’t matter.” She mumbled.

Nick thought it best to drop the subject. It didn’t matter how bad Sindy’s family were to her, he knew she would never tell on them. He reached over the sofa and picked up a brown paper bag off the floor. “I got these for you today.”

Sindy side glanced the bag. “What is it?”

“Look inside and you’ll find out.” He placed the bag next to her. Nick choked a little laugh when he noticed Sindy frown as she took another bite of her sandwich. Any other girl would have been excited if a man bought her gifts. Nick knew from the many conversations he’d had with Roger that Sindy had never been treated right in her life and didn’t know how to accept a kind gesture. “Aren’t you going to take a look at what I’ve got for you?”

Sindy puffed her cheeks as she placed the bag on her knees. Her eyes widened as she took out a small hanger. It was a white bra with a matching thong, she looked in the bag there was a black set and a red set too.

Nick laughed at the look on her face. “I think they are the right size, if not I’ll change them tomorrow.”

Sindy ran her fingers over the soft lace of the bra, then checked the size. “Why have you got these for me?”

“You told me last night you couldn’t afford a bra, so I thought I’d buy you some. Are they the right size?”

Sindy nodded and turned away, she felt like crying, she’d never had underwear as fine as that before. “Thank you.” She whispered. “I’ll pay you back when I find a job.”

Nick moved to the edge of the sofa and tilted his head to try and look at her, but she turned away from him. “Sin,” He quietly spoke. “They’re a gift. You don’t pay people back for gifts.”

“Can I go and try them on?” She mumbled still not looking at him.

“Of course, you can.” He gently stroked his hand up and down her back. “You know where the bathroom is.”

Nick watched Sindy walk out of the living room, he took her plate and mug into the kitchen, then went upstairs to his bedroom to hang his uniform in the wardrobe.

Sindy stood in front of the large bathroom mirror, she had chosen to try on the red bra and thong. Tears welled in her eyes as she smiled. Running her hands over the bra and turning around to see how the thong cut down her backside, she felt like one of the models that she had seen in catalogs.

Hearing Nick moving around in his bedroom, she pulled the band out of her hair letting it fall loose over her shoulders, then ruffled it. She couldn’t believe how sexy she felt. Opening the bathroom door, her heart raced as she walked across the landing and stood in Nick’s bedroom doorway.

Nick pulled his t-shirt over his head and noticed Sindy standing in the doorway, she looked stunning. He bit his bottom lip as he felt a sudden flow of blood rush to his cock. “Come here.” He growled.
