Karis shuffled backward on her seat trying to get comfortable. Sitting on a small wooden box in the back of a cold van for the past two weeks was not something she was happy about. For the first week in October, her friends were full of enthusiasm staking out Leah’s house, but they’d soon lost interest. Shivering as she blew warm breath against her hands, she was beginning to doubt her prediction that Leah and the devil were returning; surely they would have arrived by now?

A gentle knock on the side of the van snapped her out of her thoughts.

“I thought you’d have been here sooner,” she grumbled as she swung the back door open and saw the tall dark-haired figure of her boyfriend.

“I’m sorry,” Brad grimaced holding up two large white styrene cups full of hot coffee. “I did try to get to you earlier but I was trying to convince the other two to return but they don’t believe the devil is coming so have definitely backed out.”

“What!” Karis gasped slumping in her seat with disbelief. “What about Clarissa. Have you spoken to her too?” she asked moving aside as Brad stepped into the van.

“She’s on her way now,” he grinned passing Karis her drink. “She apologized for not helping but she has got her own business to deal with.”

“Ok,” Karis mumbled taking the lid off her drink and blowing it. “Rick and Damian are here.”

“I thought it was them,” Brad glanced across the dark street and nodded an acknowledgment to Kari’s brother and his friend sitting in the red Corsa. “How long have they been here?”

“Four hours,” Karis answered taking a sip of her coffee and grimaced at the bitter taste. “They’ve set the trap but there’s one problem,” she paused slipping her hand into her coat pocket and took out a small round plastic box. “They can’t get the trip to work so if or when Leah and the devil arrive someone’s got to get inside the house to trigger it.”

“Shit!” Brad hissed rubbing his forehead with frustration. “I guess Rick or Damian are gonna do it; they are the professionals?”

“No,” Karis shook her head. “I’m doing it.”

“Are you fucking crazy?” Brad cried throwing his arms in the air. “If Leah or especially the devil get an inkling of what’s going on; your life will be in danger!”

“I’ll be ok, I’m going to wait for Leah to be on her own,” Karis reassured him as she reached across the van and held his hands. “If I introduce myself, she should know who I am because I’ve been taking care of the house. I’ll tell her I’ve left something and ask if I can get it.”

Brad slowly shook his head staring at her in disbelief. He knew once Karis had made her mind up about something, he wouldn’t be able to change it. “Ok, but promise me you’ll only attempt to trap her if you are one hundred percent sure you are safe to do it.”

“Don’t worry about me, I have one of these to help.” She grinned taking a Taser out of her pocket. “And the high-tech demon trap invented by Rick and Damion.” She proudly stated. “You do know they are the best demon hunters in the world.”

“I know, I know,” he groaned rubbing his face; he’d heard her say that so many times. “Do you think the trap will hold her? After a hundred years of living with him, who knows how powerful she can be now.”

“Brad, we are in the twenty-second century.” Karis laughed shaking her head. “You need to stop reading those history books. Technology is now the finest it’s ever been.” She placed her hands on his knees and excitedly squeezed them. “Now stop worrying and imagine us living together for eternity. You still want that, don’t you?”

“You know I do,” Brad sighed gently stroking her cheek. “I just don’t want you to put your life in danger for us.”

“I told you, don’t worry. I can do this,” she smiled reaching for her ringing mobile, and glanced at it. “It’s Rick.” She said as she answered it. “Hi, what’s up?”

Brad sat in silence as Karis listened to Rick. Her eyes widened with excitement as she stared across the van at him. “They’re here.” She grinned cutting the call and rushed across the van. Scrambling onto the driver’s seat she grabbed her binoculars and looked through them. Her heart thudded in her chest as she watched the driver’s door of the black limo open. A well-built man dressed in a smart black suit stepped out and opened the back door. A tall athletic man with long dark hair exited the car followed by the slender figure of Leah wearing a white fur coat. Jewels around her neck glistened under the street lights as she slipped her coat from her shoulders and threw it into the back of the car. Karis’s heart thumped so hard in her chest, she felt like it was going to explode; from the photo she’d found in the house, she knew the woman was Leah.

“Is it them?” Brad eagerly asked.

“It certainly is,” Karis answered passing him the binoculars. “It’s the girl in the photograph.”

Brad held the binoculars to his eyes watching the devil wrap his arm around Leah’s waist as they walked towards the house laughing. “They look happy about something,” he muttered.

“Don’t they just,” Karis muttered reaching for her mobile. “I’m going to phone Clarissa to let her know they’ve arrived.

“Oh my!” Leah gasped entering the house staring at the marble flooring in the hallway and dark oak stairway. “This isn’t how I remember it. It’s beautiful!”

“Only the best for you my love,” the devil beamed holding her hand and led her into the living room.

Leah’s eyes widened as she stared around the small living room. With the white painted walls, plush red carpets, cream sofa with red velvet cushions, and matching curtains; she’d never seen her home looking so fancy. She shook her head in amazement as she took a step back noticing how the furniture was placed. “It’s also set out how it was when I lived here.”

“It has to be,” the devil laughed. “You don’t want to be tripping over anything, do you?”

“I don’t understand what you mean by that,” she quizzically looked up at him.

“When you’re ready to see your family again you will also see the house as it used to be.” He answered glancing at his watch.

A huge grin spread across her face. “Are they here?”

“They certainly are my love,” he smiled gently stroking her face. “I have to go now.”

Leah gazed up at him with puppy dog eyes; she didn’t like being on her own. “Do you have to?”

“You know I have business to attend to,” he sighed placing his hands on her hips and gently swayed her body. “It’s only for three days. Just think of all the fun you’re going to have tormenting your family while I’m away.”

“I know,” Leah giggled.

“That’s my girl,” The devil wrapped his arms around her and nuzzled his face against her neck. “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Leah blissfully sighed breathing in the scent of his strong musk cologne.

“I have to go now,” the devil cupped her face with both hands. He gazed lovingly into her eyes, leaned forward, gently kissed her on the lips, and stood back. “I’ll see you soon.” He smiled and turned to walk away.

“Aidan,” Leah quietly spoke.

“Yes, my love?” He asked turning to face her.

“When we return home, please could we try for a baby?” She sweetly smiled. “It’s been a hundred years since we met. I thought by now we’d have had a huge family.”

“That would be great.” He smiled holding his arms out to her. “Do I get another kiss?”

“Oh yes,” Leah shuddered with excitement imagining how grand her baby’s nursery would be as she threw her arms around him. The devil's strong arms held her tight around her waist holding her close to him as their lips crashed into a heated kiss. Feeling dizzy and unable to breathe, her weakened body slumped against him.

The devil broke the kiss, he moved back before she could faint and held her arm while she found her bearings. “I’ll see you soon, yes.”

“Ok,” Leah nodded catching her breath. “Aidan,” she mumbled feeling confused scratching her head. “What were we just talking about?”

“The fun you’re going to have tormenting your family,” he grinned opening the door.

“Oh yeah,” she laughed shaking her head still feeling confused. “I don’t know what happened then, my mind went blank.”

“It must be all the excitement of returning home,” he laughed stepping into the porch.  “I’ll see you in three days,” he said walking away.

Leah stood by the living room window and sighed, her heart had begun to ache for him already. He did say she could go with him but she didn’t see the point in going. Women weren’t allowed to go in conference rooms, so she chose to return home. When his car was out of sight she closed the curtains. “Right you fuckers,” she slyly smiled as she closed her eyes to concentrate.

Taking deep breaths she slowly opened her eyes. “Oh my god!” she laughed scanning the dimly lit shabby living room. Her father was slumped in the cozy chair in the corner with a glass of whiskey in his hand watching the TV. Noticing movement in her peripheral vision, she turned and saw her two sisters standing in the living room doorway glaring at her.

“Who the hell do you think you are locking me in the cupboard?” Kimberly snarled storming towards her.

For a split second Leah was confused, her sister was talking like she’d locked her in the cupboard that day, then she realized her family didn‘t know they’d been trapped in the house for a hundred years. Taking a step back as her sister, red faced with anger rushed towards her. Leah held her hands up and laughed at the terrified look on Kimberley’s face as her power flung her backward across the room.

Anna held her head screaming in horror.

“What the fuck’s going on!” Their father slurred clenching his fist as he tried to get up from his chair then fell to the floor screaming in agony waving his hands in the air. “Help get it off me!” he screamed. In his mind, his truck was crushing him.

Leah rolled her head back laughing as the doorbell rang.

“Help us!” Kimberley and Anna screamed running towards the door and tried to open it but couldn’t.

Leah closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The doorbell rang again. Feeling annoyed that her fun had been interrupted she opened her eyes and nodded with approval at her cushy living room; she couldn’t see her family. “I’m coming!” she snapped making her way to the door wondering who it could be.

Leah opened the door, standing in front of her was a tall, slim, blonde-haired woman in an oversized tartan coat. “What do you want?” she curiously asked.

“You don’t know me but my name’s Karis.” She sweetly smiled. “I’ve been taking care of your house while you’ve been away.”

“Ok,” Leah shrugged. “Why are you here?”

“I’m so sorry to disturb you, but I’ve left my laptop here,” Karis clasped her hands looking at Leah with pleading eyes.  “I’m in university studying for my final exam to become a nurse and all my notes are on the laptop.”

Leah puffed her cheeks wishing the woman would shut up. “Do you know where it is?”

It’s in the secure drawer in the cabinet,” Karis held a key up.

“I haven’t had a proper look around the house yet,” Leah took the key and moved aside to let Karis in. “Which room is it in?”

“The dining room,” Karis answered taking a step into the hallway.

“Follow me,” Leah ordered making her way along the hallway towards the dining room.

Karis’s heart thudded in her chest, she couldn’t believe her luck; Leah had her back to her. Slipping her hand in her pocket she held onto the Taser. All she had to do was wait until they were in the dining room then she would have Leah where she needed her to be.
