23 Sep 2021 - Sonnet

Night’s neon tan the only light she knows -
third shift is when the plastic river flows.
Both kids and babysitter fast asleep,
she heads downtown, appointed rounds to keep.
She knows herself a shepherd to her flock,
the hungry fear that haunts each face. They mock -
at least they try to - all their tender needs
she’s found so easy to decode and read.
She squats there on the stage and each draws near
like little boys - God bless the simple dears!
So awful to be born a man these days,
when lust is their one authorized escape!
She wants to hug them all, each little man,
although she knows they wouldn’t understand.
