I am what I am, no fool or beggarman,
I'm just a poet, not a scholar, just me,
at night with a pen, sometimes music,
sipping tea.

There are times when I speak to the dead,
if not ashes in a pillbox, or in an urn.
Better if I can see my midnight visitor,
even if I have cataracts, he can see me.

Often called a dyed-in-the-wool fool,
but ask who is spinning the bobbin.
I'm not Rumpelstiltskin,
just a poet, who speaks to the dead.

"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou!"
I'm just a poet, not a scholar, just me,
at night with a pen, sometimes music,
sipping tea.
