Rian Deveraux licked her dry, cracked lips.

How long had she been in this nightmare? A week? A month? She couldn't tell. The days and nights seemed to overlap; without the sun she couldn't tell what time it was, let alone what day.

Her mind was foggy and she could not say for sure is it was the fear or the drugs that had her head swimming. Probably both.

Rian tried to move, to ease the agonizing pain in her muscles, but when she did her shoulders screamed in protest , feeling as if someone had doused them in kerosene and lit them ablaze. Without even realizing it, she let out what should have been an ear piercing scream, but instead came out more like a muffled grunt. She was too hoarse to talk, too dehydrated to cry, suspended by a hook that held the chain that kept her wrists fettered together; the balls of her feet just barely able to touch the ground.

A dry sob heaved in her chest and for the first time since they had locked her in here, naked and terrified, she lost all hope, praying death would claim her.

"Do you need water?" the familiar voice growled unkindly.

She nodded weakly, barely able to manage that small gesture. The man next to her scooped a ladle full of tepid water out of the dirty bucket and brought it to her lips. It took tremendous effort, but she swallowed the liquid, dribbling most of it down her chin and exposed breasts. When he pulled the ladle away, she protested.

"More" she croaked. "Please,"

"I'll give you more, but it will cost you." he said finally.

She knew what the price was and her body shuddered with revoltion at the thought.

"Fuck you!" She spat, knowing the consequences for her insolence. She just hoped she could make him mad enough to kill her quickly.

"Fuck me?" he hissed, his ire rising quickly. He spun and grabbed his switch off of the wall.

Rian's heart thundered in her ears and her breathing quickened because she knew what was coming; but she almost welcomed the punishment because she also knew that her weakened body couldn't take much more and the end was near.

"Do it." she taunted hoarsely, hoping to goad him into losing control.

The maniacal gleam in his eyes sparked brighter and he licked his lips.

"Fucking do it!" she yelled with a strength that was fueled by pure adrenaline. " Hit me you cock sucking shrimp dick motherfucker!"

With an amazing effort she kicked out with her legs, then screamed in pain as she felt both of her shoulders pop loudly and dislocate.

"Bitch!" he bellowed, wrenching her battered body from the hook and slamming her onto the cold hard ground.

Before Rian could even attempt to move, he kicked her hard in the ribs, making her dry heave and cry out.

"You stupid cunt!"

Then the sharp pain of the switch came, tearing and slicing her flesh as he snapped it repeatedly over her back, butt and legs.

She wasn't able to deflect the blows let alone move. She vaguely heard the string of profanities he spit at her and the pain was lessening. The edges of her vision blurred and she smiled as a blissful, dream like quality took over her body.

Rian went to her happy place then. She imagined a sunny field full of wildflowers; a warm breeze. She could see herself in a white sundress enjoying the gentle wind caressing her face.

"It's beautiful." She murmured, looking around.

A gorgeous man stood just a few yards away, bathed in a golden light. She admired him though

he had no specific features. She tentatively took a step toward him, almost being pulled to him by an unseen force. Then he spoke to her. Actually, it was more like yelling.

"FBI, freeze!"

Rian blinked several times in confusion, unsure of what she had just heard.

"I said freeze!" the voice boomed.

Then the dream disappeared as a deafening blast rang in her ears.

Three times.

Opening her eyes, she realized she was, once again, in the rank darkness.

No field. No sun. Only pain.

Rian could hear a commotion around her. The atmosphere of the room had changed somehow. Rough hands touched her and she groaned in agony, the pain so bad she was screaming inside.

"I need a medic!" a deep voice commanded.

The hands turned her onto her side and cupped her face.

"Miss? Can you hear me?" the same voice asked. It was a nice voice that flowed over her like warm honey.

"Yes." she whispered painfully, not sure he'd even heard her.

"Open your eyes." he ordered in a soft clear voice.

Feeling lethargic and slow she forced her eyelids up. They felt like they weighed a thousand pounds each. She couldn't focus, it was too hard.

"Can you tell me your name?"

She closed her eyes again and barely shook her head.

"Let me die." she pleaded.

"That's not gonna happen darlin'. You're safe now."

She couldn't understand what he was talking about.

"Your name?" he coaxed again.

She felt him carefully sweep her hair form her face.

"Well Rian, we've been looking for you."

"Don't hurt me anymore. Please."

"Nobody's gonna hurt you honey. We're the good guys. Just keep talking to me. Stay with me."

"I'm so.....tired."

"I know. You'll be alright."

He stopped talking for a second and it scared her. She reached for him with a weak shaky hand, afraid she'd imagined him. As if he could read her mind he touched her hand and said,

"I'm still here sweetheart."

She could tell he he had turned his head as he shouted again for a medic. Rian chuckled feebly.

"Somethin' funny?" he asked with a smile in his voice.

"I have to laugh to keep from crying."

He stroked her hair until she heard others come into the room. There were whispers, about her she was sure.

"Rian, I know this is going to hurt like hell, but the medics are going to relocate your shoulders before they move you." the man said in a soft comforting voice.

She trembled, but nodded. Half dozen pairs of hands moved over her, holding her up and twisting her body

"On the count of three sweetie. One...Two...Three."

Rian felt a tug and pain seared clear into her brain as one shoulder popped back into place. She heard screams and wondered where they came from before she realized they were her own.

"It's okay Rian. One down."

"Oh God." she moaned, feeling like she was going to vomit.

"One more time, on three. One...Two...Three."

That was the last thing she heard before sweet oblivion and darkness took her away.
