Today was Daniel Hart's ninetieth birthday. He was a still a handsome man to whom the years had been kind, even though his back was stooped, his glasses were thick, and he kept his teeth in a glass by the bed at night.

His hair was as thick and lustrous as it always had been, but it was now a pearly white and not the yellow-gold he had been blessed with for a large part of his life.

He had always been kind, thoughtful, respectful of others, always optimistic, with a smile for everyone and never a bad word to say about anyone. He was a good man, and it showed.

Daniel had been a sportsman for most of his adult life, had loved most sports, had even continued playing rugby into his forties, stopping only when he broke his arm for a second time.

It had been a good day. A lot of his old friends, team mates, and relatives, or at least, those who were left, had come to visit, and they'd swapped stories and memories until late into the evening. He had no children, had never been married, had been a confirmed bachelor. He had nevertheless enjoyed a wonderful and satisfying love life, had loved many women, just could never commit to anyone for life. He had retained his ever-present sense of humor, had never forgotten his friends and relations, and in return, they'd showered him with their respect and love.

They'd all been here today, of course, had talked with him, laughed with him, brought him all manner of gifts and, as he lay in his bed at the end of a long, wonderful day, his heart was as full of happiness as it had ever been in his life. If I don't wake up in the morning, he thought to himself, I will have seen it all, done it all, known more love than anyone has a right to expect. There's nothing left, and I can die happy.

Nonetheless, as he drifted happily off to sleep, a smile on his wrinkled face, his very last thought of the day was, wouldn't it be lovely to do it all again!
