Chapter 5: Halloween Party
"I don't like this." I said looking in the mirror.
Nick stared at me and smiled. "You look hot, Lee. Maybe you'll get a normal, human man at the party."
I glared at him. "I don't want any man, Nick. I kind of just want to be alone."
I adjusted the corset and shook my head in the mirror. "I'm sure the Devil wouldn't wear a corset. Why'd you buy this?"
"Because it's hot, Lee. And I'm sure that if the Devil was a bitch, she'd wear a blood red corset."
"I look like a hooker." I said.
"The devil horns, tail and standing stick thing says differently."
"It's called a Trident." I said.
"Whatever." Nick said. I looked back at him. "Who are you supposed to be?" I asked.
"Vampire." He whispered.
I gave him a look. "Really, Nick? A vampire? Seriously?"
He shrugged. "Seriously. Now I can have girls lining up offering themselves to me asking me to bite them."
"Talk about Bloodlust." I said nonchalantly. I turned back to the mirror. Yeah, this corset will fall at any second.
There was a knock at the door and I looked at Nick. "Can you get that?" I asked.
He nodded. "Sure because I'm the fucking maid."
I nodded and smiled at him. "Exactly."
Nick walked out of my room and ran downstairs. I adjusted my black wig and took a deep breath. These red contacts really hurt.
But it made me really look evil. More like a vampire than a Devil though.
"Leena!" Nick called.
I walked out of my room, through the hallway and down the stairs.
Nick was in front of the door blocking the view of someone.
"Who is it?" I asked.
Nick moved aside and the guy from yesterday was standing in the doorway.
"Can you give us a second?" I asked Nick.
He nodded with a smile on his face. I guess he thought that me and this guy was together and he was normal. The exact opposite big bro.
Nick ran up the stairs as the guy came in. He scanned my outfit and his eyes widened. "Um…nice..outfit."
"What do you want?" I asked.
He reached into his back pocket and had the gun.
"I decided to look for it." He shrugged.
I looked into his eyes. "Thank you." I said.
He placed it in my hand. Our skin brushed up against each others. "Why didn't you go to the hospital so they could get the fever down?"
"I can't afford a hospital. Okay? I'm homeless as far as I know."
"Homeless? That's why you were on my couch?"
He sighed. "I don't know how the hell it happened, okay? I just came to return your gun. Not to have you act like my mother."
"Where are you gonna go?" I asked.
"You're a prick, I know but if you need somewhere to stay….then….."
"You really think I would trust you?"
"I'm not the one who can read thoughts." I said.
He glared at me. "I don't want to talk about it. I'm just trying to forget it."
"But you can't turn it off can you?"
He shook his head. "Which is why I can't stay here. Which is why I rather be alone. Okay?"
I stared at him. Why was he being so stubborn?
"Because I don't know you and I don't want fucking pity. That's why I'm being stubborn." He answered.
"Then leave. And don't come back." I said.
He nodded. "Sounds like a fan-fucking-tastic idea." He walked out the door and slammed it shut.
Yeah, I'm sick and tired of him.
"You ready, Lee?" Nick called from upstairs.
"Yeah. don't get embarrassed if my boobs fall out of this thing." I said adjusting it.
Nick came downstairs in a dramatic cape and I had to roll my eyes.
"You're going to be made fun of."
"It's a Halloween party."
"I thought you hated vampires."
"I do. But they get a lot of pussy. Got to respect them for that."
Oh, that's disgusting.
"Whatever, can we go now?"
He shrugged and went to the door to open it. I walked out and he followed me out and locked the door.
"So who was that uh…freak at your door?"
"Just some guy."
"You fucking him?"
"What's it to you?" I asked as I unlocked the door to my car.
"Better than fucking a dead man." Nick shrugged.
"Thanks Nick." I said as I got in and slammed the door shut.
He got in with me. "Hey, I'm sorry. It's just……I don't want you getting involved with any more vampires. They fuck, eat, and then leave."
"Just like human men. Weird." I said sarcastically as I started the car up.
Nick sighed and rolled down his window.
Nick dragged me to this party because he claimed I had no life. I obviously did. I have my own house, a job that I was good at it, my favorite show comes on every Monday that I look forward to and oh my god…I'm a loser.
I sigh at the realization.
Nick looks over to me. "What?" He asked.
"I'm a loser." I said.
He chuckled. "Yeah, It's about time you realized it."
I scoffed. "You have your moments too, Nick."
He raised his eyebrow. "Uh…no...can't think of any." He looked back out of the window.
"In second grade, everyone made fun of you."
"My ears were bigger than my head at that time, that wasn't my fault. So it doesn't count. Plus I'm sexy now."
"And cocky. Some things never change."
"Shut up and drive." He said pushing his seat back. "This car is stupid."
"No it's not. Just because it's not your stupid sedan doesn't mean its not awesome. It's a classic."
"A Toyota is not a classic." he said.
I pulled up into a parking lot of the biggest hotel in Malison, Florida.
It was so huge. And looked expensive. Red lights circled the trees. And the entrance into the building.
There was a huge poster in the front that read in big black letters 'Welcome to the Halloween Ball. BEWARE.'
"Nick, please don't leave me alone at this party like you did at Alan Taylor's party."
"He was into you. You liked him too didn't you?"
"I regret it. He was my first." I said.
Nick looked over at me. "Alan was your first? He's a player, girl. The hell is wrong with you?"
I shrugged. "I was sixteen and stupid. Plus I thought he was unbelievably cute at the time." I said as I swerved the car around the corner. There were cars on both sides of the street.
"Damn there's a shit load of people here." Nick said shaking his head.
I looked out of the window and turned the car onto another street. It was much darker and had a negative feeling oozing all over it.
"I'll kick your ass if you park down here. You're better off in the grass on that other street."
"That's like four blocks away, Nick. I'm not parking down there."
He sighed and sat back as I pulled onto the curb on the street and turned the car off. We both got out and started walking.
Nick looked to me. "If a monster come after you, don't look to me."
"Fine." I said and then continued walking down the street.
"You think any vampires will be here?" I asked.
Nick shrugged. "I mean….I don't think so. I'm sure they have better things to do than go to a Halloween party."
As we turned the corner, we got closer to the entrance.
Nick looked over and smiled to a girl in a 'Bride of Frankenstein' costume. She winked at him and he smiled.
"I'm so gonna work the hell out of this vampire costume." He said.
I rolled my eyes as we got to the entrance. It was cold.
A lot of people were dressed up. It seemed like this might just be okay. "I think this will be fun N-" I looked over. Nick was gone. "Nick?" I asked.
Damn…he left me again.
I made my way inside and fell into awe as the decorations awed me. Beautiful orange and black and red and white.
Food tables and pumpkins covered the place. Holy damn.
It was beautiful. Why did I wait so long to come here? Probably because I'm sick of being stubborn and staying home alone.
I went to the food table and chowed down.
I eventually turned to look for Nick but he was nowhere to be found. I decided to let him have his fun alone.
I walked around and carefully assessed the place.
"Excuse me." I turned to see a pretty brunette woman with hip length hair and piercing blue eyes staring at me. She wasn't in a costume.
"Yes?" I asked.
She stepped closer to me. Almost as if she was going to kiss me. "I'm Svetlana." She said in a low voice. My eyes grew wide.
Damn….Alexander. Does she know what happened?
"You know of me." She said smirking.
I nodded. "Alexander's girlfriend." I breathed.
"Ex. He's dead. I'm sure you knew of that too."
I nodded. "I'm so sorry about your lost. I honestly liked him. He was a good man." I said.
"How did he die? Little birdies told me he was last seen with you. Question is, how did he end up dead?" She asked.
I stared into her eyes. I could have ratted Christian out but I decided to take another route. I'm going to hate myself for this.
"There was so much going on, I don't know what happened." I said.
She stared into my eyes. "You're lucky that I'm weaker than usual at the moment or else I'd constrain you."
I swallowed and kept my eyes on hers. "I honestly liked him. He was very loyal." I said.
"I know he was." she whispered.
Svetlana looked around us and then shrugged. "Think I'll stick around and keep an eye on you. Just to be sure." She purred in my ear and it made me a little more than uncomfortable.
"O-okay." I stuttered.
She walked away from me, swinging her hair as she went. I turned back to the food table and grabbed a breadstick and dipped it in some mozzarella sauce. Yeah, I was eating to cure my boredom but for some reason, no matter how much I eat, I never get fat.
I glanced to the left and Svetlana was talking to someone and glanced at me. I turned back to the table.
I'm being stalked….at a party.
I gulped and looked to my right. Nick is still no where. Damnit…where's your big brother when you need him?
How did she even find me?
She had to have seen Christian and he must have…..
He probably told her I had something to do with Alexander's death. Oh…..
Talk about being a traitor.
"Miss?" Asked someone behind me.
Really...what is it with the formalities?
Why do people keep talking to me?
I turned around and I came face to face with a man in a formal suit and black mask.
Damn was he sexy.
"Hi." I said.
"You don't remember me?" He asked.
I shook my head. "That mask isn't helping with my memory." I shrugged.
He smiled. "Jackson." He said.
"Jackson?" My breath caught in my throat. Christian killed that bastard didn't he?
"Jackson Aims? We met at the library a while ago and you said you were going to call me but you…uh…you never did."
I stared at him. Oh yeah, because that night changed my life. That's the night Christian came back into my life.
"I'm sorry, this guy I cared about came back in the picture and I guess he threw off my train of thought."
"Is he still in your life?' He asked as he stepped closer to me.
'Uh," I laughed nervously.
"What?" He asked.
"Nothing, it's just…It's complicated."
"Complicated. I can keep up. Want to go talk in private?" He asked.
"What so you can take advantage of me?" I asked.
He shrugged. "No. I would just like to talk to you, that's all."
"Well, I don't know you. How do I know you're not a psycho?"
He shrugged. "You don't know. Sometimes you just need to take a chance. Have you ever taken a chance with a vampire?"
"Yeah, because I trusted him at the time."
"He's the ex boyfriend?"
I nodded. "Yeah."
"What happened to him?"
I shrugged. "It just got complicated. But what about you?"
He shrugged. "No offense but I can't be with something that's dead."
I stared at him. He has a point but I looked pass the fact that Christian was dead.
He scanned my outfit. "Can you tell me your name again?" He asked.
I nodded. "Leena Phillips." I said.
He stared at me. "You were on the news. Weren't you?"
"Yeah, A little…Incident that happened in Tankerton."
"You know who did it, don't you?"
I nodded. "I can't disclose the information." I said.
He tilted his head. "You're protecting some one." He said.
"How do you figure that?"
"You won't tell the public their names. Only that there were three of them."
"What will the public do when I say the names? Nothing. They can't. The three people were vampires." I shrugged.
Jackson bit his lip.
"Don't you find it weird though, that we both just so happen to move to Malison, Florida?" I asked.
He smiled. "I don't find it weird. I rather call it fate." He said.
I laugh nervously as goose bumps rise on my skin.
"Can we go talk in private?"
"Let me guess…in a room, right? I'm not that kind of girl." I said.
"I know. Just wait here, okay?"
Jackson disappeared almost immediately when a crowd of people came his way.
I brought out my phone and since I knew Nick wasn't going to answer his cell, I just left him a voicemail saying to call me when he's ready to go.
I glanced to my left where I last saw Svetlana before but she wasn't there anymore.
She made me nervous. And not in a good way. I felt like she'd tear my throat out at any moment.
She resembled Emily Blunt.
Jackson came back and had a card. "I won't try anything. I promise. We should just go talk in a more quiet place. Okay?"
I shrug. "Sure." I said.
Some part of me could smell trouble but he somehow drew me in.
I grabbed my hand firmly and led me up the stairs and into the elevator.
He pressed the number 5 and then looked at me.
He smiled sweetly but I knew it was fake but I smiled back anyway.
When the doors open, he dragged me along with him and to a door.
He used the card and slid it in the slot and then turned the knob.
The door opened and we both walked in. It looked better than my house altogether. He didn't hesitate as he brought me through the dark hallway without turning the lights on.
He led me straight to the bedroom and closed the door.
"Is that really necessary?" I asked.
He shrugged. "Privacy." He said.
I sat down on the edge and then looked up at him.
His hand touched my cheek softly and then his hand went to his face and then he took the mask off.
Ah, the face. I remember.
He sat next to me, Our sides were touching.
"You look really good tonight, Leena."
"Thanks. You don't look so bad yourself." I said.
He chuckled. "Thanks."
I looked down at the carpet and I could feel his eyes on me. He started playing with my hair. "So beautiful." He whispered.
I looked to him.
He slowly leaned over and I don't know why but I didn't move.
He kissed me softly and then placed his hand on my leg.
I pull away first and smile and look back down to the carpet.
He lean back over and then started kissing my neck.
Damnit this is wrong. I wished he was Christian. If this was Christian, our clothes would be off by now.
"Who ruined Tankerton," He whispered in my ear which sent me out of my reverie. "Tell me the names." He whispered.
"I want the names, Leena."
"I'm not telling you." I said.
He chuckled and then suddenly grabbed me tightly by my arms and bent me over the bed.
Whoa. What the fuck?
I gasped as he ripped my head back by pulling hard at my hair.
"Tell me the fucking names, Leena." He growled in my ear.
"I don't know." I cried.
"You don't know? I'll fucking make you remember." He said as he grinded against me.
"No." I begged.
"Don't think so?" I heard the sound of his zipper and I started to fight him as he lifted my skirt up.
"Leena." Another voice called and I was almost in relief as I heard it.
"Remy," I breathed and the guy's grip on me disappeared. And so did he.
I turned around and Remy had the guy by his neck. He squeezed his hand around the guy's neck until blood spilled out of him and Remy let him crumble down to the ground.
I got to my feet and pulled my skirt back in place.
"He was a vampire hunter." Remy said.
"How do you know?" I asked.
"The tattoo." He said,
He grabbed the guy's lifeless body and pulled him over to me and turned him over so he was face down on the floor.
In the back of his head was a tattoo showing some odd symbol.
"It means 'hunter' in an unknown language. Svetlana told me Alexander had one on his arm."
"Thank you. But I thought we had to stay away because of the press."
"Fuck the press. Let's just get the hell out of here."
