Chapter 2: Into the night
My life has to be normal now.
That's how it belongs.
Even after what's happen…..I have to find some humanity.
Working at Ros. LM was a good way to get my mind of stuff.
Like press for instance and the pressure my brother put on me to assure that I'm not dating any vampires.
He has grown strong hatred for them. Stronger than even before.
Since, the Alison, Christian and James incident, he's been against anything with pale skin, sharp teeth and dark eyes.
And it's kind of been the same for me.
Since that whole thing that happened at the Tankerton mall, me and Remy haven't exactly been in contact. We stay away so the press won't try to be in contact with us.
It was quite a move getting to Malison, Florida. But it was a move that had to be made.
Illinois has cleared out completely and soon, any other state would do the same.
Now that vampires are completely out in the open, people have hardly been outside. A new Bloodlust has been built. In Malison coincidentally enough and of course I plan to stay away.
The car phone rang and I pressed the button. I've been attracted to cars with phones since Alexander used the one in his car.
"Hello?" I asked as I turned onto a dark street.
"Hey, you called me earlier." Nick said.
I did? Oh yeah, I did. "Yeah, I wanted to know if anybody is outside of your house. Police officers or anything?"
"I don't think so. Maybe earlier. They know that we know the vampires that ruined Tankerton. They're not going to stop harassing us until we give up the names."
"Even if we do, what will it do? They act like they can just find James, Alison, and Christian, they'll put em' in jail forever and its done. They act like it'll be that simple."
"They don't know what the vampires of capable of, Lee. They just been discovered. Calm down."
I sighed and shook my head. "It's just fucking stupid, that's all."
"Shut up. Where's Kindle?"
"Still avoiding us."
"She can't stay mad forever."
Nick breathed out. "I hope not. I still have plans to hit that."
I rolled my eyes. "I'm about to go to her house and try to get her to forgive us."
"She was always stubborn like that."
I nodded. "She was. I'm gonna go visit her. I'll call you when I'm on my way back home."
"Okay." Nick hung up.
I bit my lip deliberately. I dialed Christian's number and waited for him to pick up. I knew he wouldn't but it was always worth a try.
I hung up as soon as I pulled into Kindle's driveway.
It's been three months since we last talked.
Damn, that girl can hold a grudge for a long time.
I turned the car off and got out of it.
I shut the door and walked up to her door and knocked on it.
I waited about two minutes before I finally got an answer. She opened the door and her face contorted in anger. She sighed and shook her head as she made way to close the door.
I stopped her. "Please." I whispered.
She opened the door back blocking me from coming in.
"Can I come in?" I asked.
She stared at me and looked pass me into the darkness of the night.
"Are you alone?"
She sucked in a breath. "Three minutes." She said and moved to let me in.
I walked into her house and my eyes roamed around elegancy of her place. She was had that about her.
I turned to look at her.
I remember she still looks the same from high school. Bright grey eyes, curly black hair that falls to her breast. And pale skin.
"I want to explain." I said.
She shakes her head.
"Don't. You lied to me, Leena."
"I didn't lie to you. I just didn't tell you everything."
"Yeah, you didn't tell me that there were…..those things. That they exist."
"I wanted to keep you away from it. I didn't want you getting wrapped up in all of it. I was doing it to protect you."
"Lying isn't protecting me, Leena."
"Only Tankerton, Illinois was supposed to know." I whispered.
"Yeah and now the whole goddamn world knows. You can tell complete strangers about it but not your best friend. You don't see how fucked up that is?"
"I'm sorry. I just didn't know how'd you react. I didn't think you'd believe me."
"If you were serious about it, I would have believed you."
"Yeah, If I come up to you and tell you, guess what, vampires exist and I dated one."
Her eyes grew wide. "You actually dated one?"
"Yes, its not as gross as it may seem."
Kindle sighed and sat down.
"So they took over Illinois, what if Florida is next?"
"How do you know?"
"I don't know but we can't just jump to conclusions just because they're out in the open."
"So outside at night time is cut off?"
Kindle laughed bitterly. "No one should have to live like that."
She shook her head and latched her fingers through her hair.
"I know. And I'm sorry. But they're out in the open now, you shouldn't blame me. They were eventually going to get out anyways."
"The second I called you, months ago before I came here, you should have told me."
"For the last damn time, you wouldn't have believed me, Kindle. Why don't you admit that?"
She narrowed her eyes at me. "It's just best to stay away." She whispered.
"From the vampires or me and Nick?" I asked.
"Both." She said indifferently.
"That is just stupid."
"How is it stupid? If I know that you socialize with those things and from what I heard, they're dangerous, so why would I stay around you?"
"That's what a friend would do."
"A smart person would stay the hell away from you and those things. You can leave now."
She got up and opened the door and looked at me.
I stared at her in complete shock. "Kindle,"
"Leave. Just go please." She said looking down at the floor.
I nodded completely dumbfounded.
I walked across her living room and glanced at her before stepping down onto the ground.
The door slammed shut behind me.
Okay, that went not as well as I expected.
I bit my lip and sighed.
I don't know if she'd ever forgive me for what I did. I kept it from her so that she'd be safe and not get involved. I didn't even want to be involved.
The only reason I was still involved was because of Remy and somewhat Christian.
Christian wanted nothing to do with me….maybe I should forget but for some reason, I couldn't. It was impossible for me to forget about him. I just didn't know why. Most likely because of the blood. It had to be the blood.
I got back into my car and laid my head back against the headrest. Goddamnit. God-fucking-damnit.
My heart started beating fast.
This is what my future holds? People getting pissed off because I didn't rat out the vampires?
I turned the car on and immediately dialed Nick as I reversed the car out of the driveway.
"Who?" He answered.
"Hey." I said.
"What's wrong with you?"
"In the middle of something."
"Ugh, Nick, that's disgusting."
"You act like we still live together. I have my apartment and you have your house and I can do what I want."
"True. I wanted to tell you that I'm going home now."
"No vamps come around?"
I shook my head. "Nope. Malison is very silent. Maybe a little too silent." I said.
Nick sighed over the phone. "So what'd she say?" He asked.
"She hates me. She hates that I didn't tell her anything. She hates it all."
"Damn, so the chances of me and her-"
"Can you stop thinking with your cock for a second?" I asked.
Nick chuckled. "Fine. I think you did the right thing from keeping it from her."
"Really?" I asked.
"Really," He answered. "You just wanted to keep her out of it and I think that's was a good thing. Maybe, eventually, she'd see that."
I nodded. "I hope so, Nick."
My driving slowed down as the street got darker.
"This street is so fucking dark." I said squinting my eyes through the darkness.
"Told you you need glasses, stupid."
"Shut the hell up." I said.
The moon was raising high above lighting the street up slightly.
It was a full moon.
As I drove in deeper, there was something lying on the ground in the middle of the street and I stopped my car and stared out there.
"Lee?" Nick asked.
"Lemme call you back." I said.
"No, what's wrong? Tell me. Your voice just got higher."
"Nothing." I whispered.
"Stay in the car."
"What makes you think I'm going to get out?"
"What are you looking at?"
"What makes you think I'm looking at something?"
"You're Leena. I know some shit is about to go down. What's happening?"
I shook my head. "Nothing. I'll call you later." I whispered.
"Lee-" I cut the phone off before Nick can say another word.
I took a deep breath.
I opened my glove compartment and got my gun out and pulled opened the door.
I put the gun in my back pocket and started walking up towards what was in the street.
As I got closer, I can see that it was a person.
I walked closer to the figure and I saw it was a boy. A man.
He looked like he was breathing. His eyes were closed.
His nose was bleeding.
I took my finger and put it under his nose to see if he was really breathing.
I felt his soft breathing.
I took my finger away and the man suddenly grabbed my arm and squeezed it.
My eyes grew wide and I stared down at the man as his eyes opened wide. They were a bright red color and they rolled to the back of his head.
I grabbed onto my gun and aimed the barrow against his chest.
He took it from me and threw it out of sight. "Let go of me." I clenched my teeth as the words harshly left my mouth.
The man growled at me and was suddenly on top of me staring deep into my eyes.
He wasn't cold. He was….hot. Literally almost fever hot. He growled at me in my ears and I whimpered in fear.
"Please." I whispered.
The man's eyes grew wide and red, to blue and then back to red. Brighter red than vampire eyes.
I gasped as the man began screaming and fell beside me and began to writhe.
His eyes were squeezed shut as he used his feet to lift himself up and he arched his back as he screamed more and blood dripped up his cheek as it seeped out of his mouth. My eyes grew wide as he began tearing his clothes off revealing his stomach and…..something was moving inside him. Pushing against his skin. "Fuck!" He screamed out and I immediately got up and ran back to my car.
I got in and quickly shut my door.
Oh shit. What the hell is happening?
I started the car back up, reversed out onto the field and whipped the car the other way as fast as I could.
Tears sprung from my eyes.
What the hell was that?
Truthfully, I didn't want to know.
I feel so confused right now.
He wasn't a vampire. He was hot. But his eyes changed. What. The. Fuck.
I quickly turned into my driveway and cut my car off.
I was breathing hard and shut my eyes. "Shit." I left the gun back….wherever he threw it. What was he?
I kept my eyes closed until my cell rung.
I opened my eyes and looked at it.
I answered it and put the phone to my ear. "Hello." I asked in a low voice.
"I'm on my way, you sound like shit."
"No. Don't." I whisper.
"I have a very heavy period this month." I said.
Nick groaned. "That's fucking nasty."
"I know. So don't come over."
"Nothing. Just saw a dead dog in the road." I lied.
"Fine. Tomorrow morning, I'm there so you can make me breakfast 'cus you know I can't cook for shit."
I nodded and smiled lightly.
"See you." I whisper.
He hung up and I put my phone into my pocket.
I cannot get mixed up in anymore drama but I can not get that image of that….man out of my head.
His eyes were……
My eyes closed again.
His skin….what was happening to him?
I shouldn't have left. Damnit. Go back. Go back.
I turned the car back on and drove back to where I saw the man before.
I don't remember the exact spot but I slowly drove by and saw small puddles of blood on the concrete.
I laid back against my seat and stared forward.
I squinted forward and I saw two red dots down the dark street.
What the hell?
Out of nowhere, they disappeared. Yep, time for me to go.
I turned the car back around. Jesus, I'm so stupid.
Just go home and you'll be fine.
Just go home, and you'll be fine.
I'm gonna go home, but I'm just not sure rather or not I'll be fine.
