Welcome Sebastian Kyle Madsen
Christian sped through Downtown Salt Lake City and I grabbing the car seat every time my contraction starts. Oh God, this fucking hurts. “Did you call my mom and your parents?” I cried out and he grabbed his cell phone and he began to talk in Danish, must be his mother. He hung up and called my mom. “Maggie, Amy’s water broke, heading to the hospital now. Baby, how far apart are the contractions?” Christian asked me and I gritted my teeth, trying to ride it out right now. When it went away, I looked at Christian with tears in my eyes. “F-fifteen minutes apart, they last about three minutes,” I said and he repeated it to my mom.
“Maggie said you have to be around four to five centimeters if the contractions are that close,” Christian said and I closed my eyes. I didn’t feel like talking right now. He got off the phone and he grabbed my hand and squeezed it.
“I love you, Amy. You are a strong woman, we are almost there.”
“I want an epidural, this hurts too much!” I cried out and he just nodded. When we made it to Salt Lake Regional, Annelise and Maggie is at the front entrance, shit how did they get here so fast? Christian let Maggie park our car and Annelise helped me out of the car.
“Mother, where is Papa?” Christian asked her.
“He is cancelling our flight as we speak. He will be here in a few minutes. Amy, just breath in through your nose, out your mouth…” Annelise said and I done just that. Christian wheeled me though the entrance and he admitted me. We got on the elevator and as the door closed, another contraction. “AHHHH!” I screamed and grabbed Christian’s hand and squeezed it.
“In through your nose, out though your mouth,” Annelise said as she rubbed my belly. I cried out in pain, so much pain. The contraction ended when we made it to the sixth floor, the maternity ward. “Mrs. Madsen is in room 612, Dr. Whitson is here and ready to check her,” The nurse said and Christian rushed me to the room and help me get into my gown. The nurse came in and wrapped the monitor on my lower stomach and I can hear the heartbeat. “He has a very strong heart,” The nurse said and smiled.
Dr. Whitson came in as my contraction started. “When did the contractions start?” Dr. Whitson asked Christian.
“She said she felt crampy this morning, and then her water broke about fifty minutes ago,” Christian said and he sounds nervous. When the contraction ended, I looked at Christian then at the doctor.
“The cramping started probably around three this morning, so about nine hours ago,” I said and the doctor nodded. He checked how far I am dilated and he smiled.
“You are at five centimeters already. You are dilating pretty quick. Do you want an epidural?” He asked and I nodded fast.
“Please!” I cried out and he used his cell phone to call the anesthesiologist. About fifteen minutes later, a red headed woman came in with a kit and she asked me to sit up.
“I am Glenda and I am going to administer your epidural,” Glenda said and Christian held me in his arms as each mother held my hands. She put some pain medication on my back and then, I can feel the pressure of the needle going into my back. “Now, you’re not allowed to get up by yourself and go to the restroom. This will not take long to take effect, understand?” Glenda said and I nodded. Another contraction started and it didn’t feel as strong, maybe the epidural is taking effect already.
The feeling in my legs went as the epidural washed through my lower body. I called Dana and Abby and told them that I am in labor. Abby said she will be up here in a few hours, she has to find Whitney a baby sitter. Dana said that she will be up there before I know it. Right after Dr. Whitson checked me, which I am not at seven centimeters and fully effaced (meaning my cervix is thinned out and ready for Sebastian), Dana walked in. “She is seven, she may deliver within the next two hours,” Dr. Whitson said and Dana grabbed my hand. “I am so excited!” Dana said and I smiled.
“Me too, I think I will take me a small nap,” I said and Christian agreed with that. I have already been in the hospital for two hours and I am almost delivery ready. I think I need to gain my strength so I can give birth to my son.
“Mrs. Madsen, we need to prep you. You are ten centimeters and I can see the head,” Dr. Whitson said and the nurse set the bed up and asked Christian and my mom to hold my feet. Dr. Whitson gowned up and the nurse got the warmer bed ready. This is going so fast for my brain. I took a three hour nap and now Sebastian is fixing to be born. “When I tell you to push, you bare down and push with all your might….PUSH!” Dr. Whitson said and I bare down with all my might and I heard Christian and the nurse count to ten and then I relaxed. “Good job, Amy, PUSH!” I pushed some more and then I screamed from the pressure I am feeling between my legs. “He is crowing, daddy, come see!” The nurse said and Christian leaned forward then looked up at me with tears in his eyes. “He has dark hair,” Christian said and the doctor told me to push again. I pushed and pushed and after three more pushes…I hear a cry. “Here he is Madsen’s, Sebastian Kyle!” Dr. Whitson said and he put my son on my chest and the nurse is cleaning him off. I touched one of his dark curls and he opened his eyes and looked straight at me. He has the bluest eyes I have ever seen, just like Christian, his daddy. “Christian, cut the cord!” The nurse said and Christian grabbed the scissors and he cut where the nurse showed him. The nurse grabbed my son and carried him to the warmer and Christian followed her. He grabbed his cell phone and began to take pictures. My mom is right behind him, with tears in her eyes.
“My first grand baby, he is so beautiful, Amy!” Mom said and I began to cry. My son is here, he is here!
About an hour later, after they took Sebastian to the nursery to weigh him and do his physical, the nursery nurse came in and gave me my son, all bundled up and wearing the toboggan Aunt Dannika made him. “Here you go, he’s so precious!” The nurse said and I moved the blanket down from his face and he is sound asleep. He weighed in at nine pounds six ounces and twenty-one inches in length. I knew he will be a big baby. Annelise, Daniel, Maggie, Dana and Abby came in and immediately wanted to see him.
“He looks just like Christian right after he was born. He was a big baby too!” Annelise said and Dana just stared at him.
“Wow, look at those chubby cheeks. Cannot wait to pinch them!” Dana said and Christian laughed. I held Sebastian up and Christian grabbed him and we all smiled at them together. Father and Son. Sebastian cooed and I can hear him move his head in the blanket. “Finally got to meet you, Sebastian. Now you cannot kick me when I kiss mommy!” Christian sand and we all laughed. Abby leaned in and gave me a hug. “He weighs two pounds heavier than Whitney when she was born. She only weighted seven pounds and three ounces. She was his weight when she was six weeks old!” Abby said and I giggled. Christian is walking around the room with Sebastian in his arms. I leaned against the pillow and just watched my husband smiling down at our son. This is total bliss, I cannot be any happier!
