Cinder crumpled up the memo and threw it in the nearest trash receptacle. Deanna shot her a look and then started laughing.
"Sounds like you're making a statement."
Cinder folded her arms.
"Rules like this are ridiculous as if the DA has any right to tell us who we can and can't fuck. As long as we don't do it at work, what's the problem?"
"You know Calvin's a control freak and we both know he's screwing one of his supervisors that works underneath him."
Cinder had heard all the rumors but what was good for the gander clearly wasn't going to be good for anyone else.
"So did you see your boyfriend Chad yet?"
Cinder shook her head.
"I'm not looking for him either," she said, "Not until I have to see him which will be in court."
"He's pretty hot looking though," she said, "You sure you want to rethink what happened?"
Cinder just shot her that look.
"No that ship's already sailed," he said, "and beneath that three piece, he's an arrogant jerk."
"Yeah heard you there…but you can't let that keep you from going out and getting some action…even if the boss is the only one who can do freely."
Typical really, Cinder thought but she wasn't about to kiss and tell what she'd been doing lest it get all over the office by the lunch recess.
"I'm just lying low and focusing on my work."
There, that sounded much better. Deanna didn't go fishing for details and Cinder headed to her cubicle. She sat at her desk and pulled up her calendar on her computer. Damn, she had a full load of arraignments including the ones she was subbing on. She'd better get her color coded files and get on over to the courthouse.
Then her phone buzzed and she saw a text from Jared.
"Good luck on your case…seeing you later…"
She just tucked her phone away having to put on her game face now. But she looked forward to later.
Jared put his phone away after texting her. He'd been thinking a lot about how good it had felt to have her mouth wrapped around his cock, giving him a thrilling ride until she'd gotten dressed and walked out on him.
Saying something about having to get up early and rush to the office in the morning. So did he, but he thought it'd be nice if they could have spent the night in his bed.
"Hey Jared…you going to handle the Tyler arraignment…?"
He looked up and saw Phil standing there with stack of files.
"Yeah…it shouldn't take long," he said, "I think he's going to take a plea."
"And do the whole 10 years?"
"Beats 25 to life, because he wouldn't win at trial…no way not with the forensics coming back against him…"
"If you're lucky…but he might drag it out thinking he's going to get a better deal."
"Won't happen," Jared said, "This is as good as it's going to get. After today, he doesn't take it, all offers are off the table."
Phil's eyes widened at his pronouncement but Jared didn't play at his job. He prosecuted hard, even though he often suckered in more than a few defendants with his easy going even laid back demeanor. But he could be ruthless too but he had to be while working hard core murder cases.
"Okay then good luck…it doesn't sound like you need it."
Jared had confidence in his abilities but a little bit of luck never hurt.
"If I can close this case out by noon, I'll consider myself lucky…"
He left his colleague and headed on down to the courthouse to handle the first case on his docket.
"Cinder, I thought I'd run into you down here."
She turned around to see a smiling Chad walking towards her. Putting one hand on a hip, she turned around to face him.
"Well, duh Chad I work here."
He tried to fake acting self-effacing, but it never worked.
"I'm just trying to be friendly," he said, "We're going to be facing off in court on Dylan's case."
She didn't bother smiling back, not wanting to fake anything with him, including orgasms.
"Yeah well I guess you're going to lose then because Dylan is guilty and he's not going to be able to buy his way out of this one."
Chad folded his arms and smirked. Dressed in his pinstriped business suit, he cast quite an image for some women. She'd been fooled herself by him but she'd gotten smart. Betrayal had a way of doing that to her.
"He's innocent until proven guilty and that's not going to happen," he said, "In fact, I think the judge will dismiss the case today for lack of evidence."
"How much are you willing to bet Cinder that this is exactly what will happen?"
Damn him, he sounded so smug, so sure. As if he knew something she didn't but was that just an act or was it the truth? Were he and Rex working behind the scenes to manipulate the process? It wouldn't be the first time. Then again, she knew she was damn good at her job that she had always graduated with honors at the top of her class from high school through law school. She could more than handle him even if he did cheat.
"I'm not talking about money," he said, "Got enough of that…but how about a romp?"
She narrowed her eyes.
"Like hell I'd ever do that again," she said, "You're truly disgusting Chad."
"And you're one frigid bitch…"
She just stared at him and he took advantage of it as he always did with weakness in others. He shared that in common with his client.
"Go to hell Chad and tell your client I'll see him in court."
She started to walk away and he just laughed. She knew he would because he always believed that everyone around him was weaker.
"Is that your way of conceding I'll beat you?"
She looked at him folding her arms.
"No…and there will be no deals on this case so you'd better be prepared to go to trial."
"Oh we'll go if the judge doesn't just dismiss this nonsense today," he said, "My client didn't rape Kaitlin. She wanted it but he didn't want to see her again after that night."
Cinder sighed. She'd heard the story before. That women cried rape after being dumped by rich studs like Dylan to get back at them for their rejection. But she thought more often it might be the other way around with men like Dylan feeling entitled to use women even hurt them to get what they wanted. She'd beat his ass in court even with his private lawyer, in fact she couldn't wait to get started.
"Just bring it on Chad…because I sure am bringing it."
And with that, she walked away from him.
Jared saw her walking down the hallway of the courthouse. A crowd of lawyers had walked inside ready to begin their dockets and he'd taken a phone call from a ballistics expert that he needed in one of his cases.
But after clicking his phone off he saw her walking towards him.
She smiled at him.
"Come here…I have to conference."
She tilted her face.
"That is so weak."
"I need to see you."
She looked around her.
"We can't…we're not supposed to you know, fraternize."
He gave her a heated look that simmered her insides in the most delicious ways.
"Just come here or I'll tie you up again."
She arched a brow.
"Wouldn't that attract a crowd?"
But he moved closer to her and pulled her into a clinch, which she couldn't complain about since they had gotten some privacy. He opened a door to a conference room and flipped on the light, closing the door behind them. Their stuff on the floor.
His mouth lowered on hers softly at first, his hands running over her body. She felt the pressure of his lips work against hers and murmured beneath them. Her own arms wrapped around him pulling him closer to her. They nearly stumbled over someone's briefcase. That brought her to her senses.
He was still too close to her.
"Why not…there's no one to watch."
"There doesn't have to be…did you get the memo?"
"Yeah I got it," he said, "And I tossed it. They can't tell me what to do in my personal life."
She furrowed her brow.
"I guess they can…I just can't believe our union didn't say anything when Calvin sprung it."
"What'd you expect Cinder," Jared said, "They probably got exemptions."
That wouldn't surprise her considering how Calvin ran his office giving some people favors and others having to work much harder. But maybe during the next election cycle someone would challenge him for his seat and they'd land a new boss.
Who might bring in his own set of rules.
Jared reached for her again and she relaxed this time because she had missed him. He kissed her harder and she ran her hands up and down his back, reaching underneath his jacket to fill his silk shirt underneath, to rub it against his skin.
"Yeah Jared…you like that don't you?"
He must have because his tongue started tracing the outline of her mouth, in ways that stirred her deep inside, making her want so much more than they could do get away with doing in the conference room just before the arraignment calendar started its new day.
"Oh god…," she groaned in between his explorations of her mouth and then his tongue separated her lips so deftly. God, the man had talents outside the courtroom with his mouth. His tongue was merciless tracing a fiery trail inside her mouth, almost making her gasp. She felt her hands reach down to unzip his pants but she stopped them.
Damn him for knowing that.
"Hey we've got a few minutes…"
"No we don't…Jared; I'm going against Chad in a few minutes…"
That sobered him up quickly and he stopped with his tongue but he stroked some tendrils off of her face instead.
"You're going to beat him Cinder," he said, "because you're better and Dylan's a rapist."
She knew more than that but she didn't say anything.
"He belongs in prison."
"I know that too but Chad's going to try to get it all dismissed."
Jared looked directly at her in a way that warmed her insides in a different way.
"The judge won't let him because you'll convince him otherwise."
She smiled at him. He'd always had confidence in her legal skills. Always reminded her to trust them and in her judgment. She straightened out her suit and bent to pick up her things.
"I guess I'd better be going," she said, "We really have to be careful…at least where people can see us."
He nodded, though he didn't seem to agree.
"I'll see you later then…at the ranch…you can bring your work…"
"If I do, I won't get any of it done and neither will you."
"I know but I had a hell of a good time with you last night and I want to see you again."
She narrowed her eyes.
"We see each other all the time…"
"Not like that and you know it. I'll make dinner and you bring dessert okay?"
She looked at him for a long moment as if she were fully considering it and then she smiled again.
"Yes I'll be there."
Before she slipped out of the conference room.
