Chapter 10: Behind the mask
Florence couldn't come with me to the charity function because she has trouble in big crowds but Justin was with me and he brought along a date and one of his friends. His name was Ben and for whatever reason, Justin thought I needed a date.
And Ben was okay. He just seemed a little too excited about the
"So what do you do?" He asked me.
My dad got us a limo. Me and Ben were sitting to the right of Justin and his blonde date.
"I'm about to become an editor at Clearwater Publishing
He smiles. "Good. I'm thinking of going to law school."
"That's great." I tried to be interested but I honestly couldn't care less. I glared at Justin for doing this to me.
There's a reason I don't bring dates whenever my dad use to have his own events.
"So, you and Justin use to be a thing, huh?" He was way to close,
exactly two inches from his lips to my ear.
I nod. "Yeah, in college."
He smiled. "Cool. Why'd ya'll break up?"
"Uh…that's kind of personal."
He nods. "Understandable. So-"
"Oh look, we're here." I said rolling down the window.
"Finally." Justin sighed.
The limo stopped and the limo driver came around and let us out.
I got out first and Ben got out after me. He grabbed my hand and I looked at him. I had the natural urge to pull away.
Justin got out with his date. I think her name was Dana. He smiled as a few cameras snapped pictures of him, then of me and Ben.
I avoided the snaps and we walked into the building. It led to a long hallway. The carpet was a dark red velvet along with walls and the hall led straight to a gold elevator.
Me, Ben, Dana, and Justin all piled in with three other people and the elevator carried us up.
I looked to Ben and he had a huge grin on his face as he looked
down at me.
I smiled back.
I guess he wasn't use to this life and it was a big deal for him.
The doors opened and we all stepped out over taken by the
elegance of the place. It was nicer than the building
There were pearl white columns lined up against the walls. The huge floor-to-ceiling windows were covered with golden lace curtains and the floor was a glossy golden color.
I liked the vibe of the place and so far, I didn't see
Justin grinned as he looked to the left of us. "All you can eat buffet. I love places like this."
Dana's browss furrowed. "Don't eat to much, Justice. You don't want to get fat."
My eyebrows raised high. Justin hates his government name,
Justice Wesley Maxwell. Boy was this girl clueless.
Justin sighed in irritation.
"Justin couldn't give a damn about his weight. Besides, his
metabolism is through the roof." I said.
He smiled. "Learn from the girl who knows everything about me." he winked at me and then went to the table.
Dana looked at me and I shrugged.
I wasn't going to feel bad for knowing Justin so well.
I needed to find my dad.
I began to walk away but I could hear footsteps falling behind me. I turned. Ben was right behind me.
I turned back around and continued to walk through the
I finally spotted my dad talking to a man.
I walked over and my dad smiled and hugged me. He kissed my hair. "Hi, hon." He released me and he looked to the man he was talking to. "This is Jacob Miles. He's one of the executive technicians for the Element."
I hold out my hand and he smiles and shakes it. "Nice to meet
you, young lady. Peyton. I've heard about you."
My smile disappeared. That reminded me.
I give him a fake smile and then look to my dad. "I have to talk to you, alone."
He nods. "Excuse us, Jacob." he said.
Jacob nods and walks away from us.
My dad looked over to Ben whom I forgot was still on my ass.
I looked to Ben who looked more than a little excited at the setup of the place.
"Oh, dad, Ben, Ben, dad. Ben, can you give us a little time alone?"
He nods. "Sure, babe."
He leaned over and kissed my cheek before walking away.
I watched after him, confused.
"Well," My dad looked surprised.
I looked to him. "He's someone Justin brought along for me. Anyway, the other night, I ran into Daniel's son."
He squinted his eyes. "Really?"
"I haven't seen Jamie in years."
"Dad, he tried to attack me."
My dad looked beyond angry. He turned bright red but managed to contain his outburst. "I'm going to handle it okay? I promise."
Ben walks back over to us. "Care to dance?" He asked.
I looked to my dad who shrugged and then I looked to Ben. "Sure."
He smiled and led me to the dance floor.
I did this all at the last event. Will they all be the same like this?
He grabbed my hands and we turned.
"Can I tell you something, Peyton?"
I nod. "Sure."
"I like you."
Oh shit. "How? We knew each other for thirty minutes, Ben."
"I don't care. I like what I see in you. You're pretty,
charismatic and I think you have the hottest tits I ever
Great. It would have been sweet until the last part. "Um…thank you. Look, Ben, I'm not going to lie to you but its not you. I just can't get involved right now."
"You look like you're hung up on someone else. I see it."
It was like the perfect moment.
Just as he said the words, I couldn't miss the man entering the party from the elevator and a prissy brunette on his arm.
Lukas walked in wearing a smoothly tailored black suit with a white button down underneath and a burgundy tie. His chocolate brown hair framed his face and his eyes were bright, yet distracted. And next to him was a short brunette girl with a beige dress and beige heels. She was pretty. Very pretty. But if there was a competition between me and her, the girl would lose.
I looked away from them, a deflating feeling in my heart.
I chuckled without humor.
"You all right?" Ben asked.
I nod. "I'm fine. I just need a drink. Or three."
Ben chuckled. "Okay."
I walked around looking for the wine table but instead I found the waiter carrying it a platter of wine.
He smiled an offer the platter of glasses to me.
Ben grabbed two glasses for me and him.
"You like red wine?" He asks.
"She prefers white." Said that smooth sexy voice that gave my
body chills every time I heard it.
I turned and met eyes with Lukas and his brunette date.
I ignored him and gave her a smile. "Hi. Peyton Moyer." I shake
She smiles. "I know. You're Victor's daughter. I heard about you."
Seems like everyone has these days.
My eyes fall to Lukas. I grab Ben's arm. "This is my date,
Lukas glances at Ben and gives him a nod before his eyes fall back to mine. "You two look great together."
Ouch. As if this moment couldn't make me any angrier, he had to say that.
Ben grabs my hand and pulls me closer to him. "I agree."
I take a sip of my red wine to distract me. Ugh.
Lukas smiles and it makes me feel what I felt that night when he
was on top of me….inside of me.
I close my eyes. God, am I the only one feeling the charge?
I open my eyes and I could tell from the look in his eyes, he was feeling what I was. So why was he here with her?
I'm a very jealous person and I didn't like that about myself but
I couldn't control it. So I decided to just remove myself from
the altercation this will turn into. "Excuse me. I'm going to go
find Justin." I say before walking away from them. It was going
to be impossible. But it was okay. I just wanted to get
I stopped and joined in a few conversations with some people from my dad's and Kary's company.
I soon spotted Justin and saw he was flirting with every girl in the building. That guy is just a full blown smooth talker.
I removed myself from the conversation to go to the rest
I stared at myself in the mirror and tucked a curl of auburn hair behind my ear.
I added a bit of gloss to my lips and tucked it back into my clutch that matched my cream colored floor-length gown that had lace covering the back.
Florence picked it out for me and it went great with my hair rolled up into a bun.
After I was done, I opened the door to leave the bathroom and
Lukas was standing across from me against the wall, looking at me
I stared at him, not knowing what to say.
"Why'd you leave?"
"Why were you ignoring my calls?" I asked.
Lukas looked questioningly at me. "Why were you calling
"To apologize for running out like that."
"And why'd you run?"
"Forget it. I have work soon and I don't want any stress on me.
Especially not from you."
"What, I put stress on you and you're the one that left?"
I shrugged. "Anyway, you should find your way back to your date and I'll find my way back to mine." I push myself from the wall and began to step away but Lukas grabs me and brings me back to where I was with him exactly an inch from me. We're looking into each others eyes and I feel the chills spreading through my body, down to my cunt.
"What?" I whisper.
"She's not my date. She's my friend's little sister and she always wanted to come to a charity function so I'm escorting her."
"Good to know." I say dryly. Yet my heart no longer feels heavy
and like metal.
Lukas grabbed my chin with his thumb and index finger to make me look into his green seductive eyes. "Don't run from me anymore, Peyton."
"Can't promise that."
"Come home with me."
I shake my head.
His gaze faltered a bit. "Why?"
"I can't spend the night and go through that again."
He sighs. "What, you think I was irritated or weirded out that you had a nightmare? Everyone has them, Peyton."
"But mine are sick and I don't want to share them."
"Then don't. But don't run out like I don't care about it."
"You don't. And I don't expect you to."
Lukas sighs. "Can we talk about this more at my place?"
"What, I'm going to leave my date for you?"
Lukas grabs my hand and opens the female restroom.
"What are you doing?"
He doesn't answer as he pulls me into the room with him and locks the door.
The room is silent, blocking out the music of the party and the conversations.
"Don't you have a speech to make?"
"Soon." He answers.
I lean against the wall, staring at him. In this room, the
tension is as sexual as ever the longer we stay silent.
"I have to get back to my date, Lukas."
He shakes his head, an unreadable expression on his face. "I didn't think I'd get mad that he was touching you."
"Jealous?" I asked.
Lukas chuckles softly and it made my heart flutter a little. "I wasn't jealous. I didn't like him touching what's mine."
"I don't belong to you." I said backing up against the
Lukas follows me, until he's in front of me, his green eyes full of fire, and stuck on mine. His hands slides my dress up my thighs. "Sure about that?" He asks.
The dress bunches up at my hips. Lukas's eyes stay on mine as he
slides his hands beneath my thighs and lifts me onto the sink. He
steps between my legs, his body close to mine.
His lifts my chin so I'll keep my eyes stuck on his. "Are you sure you don't belong to me?"
I couldn't answer.
I wanted to belong to him. I felt it deep in my body.
"I don't know. I hear you're always running around with other
"What did I tell you before? Do not believe the shit you hear in the media."
"Kind of can't help it. Everyone talks about you. Everyone wants
Lukas nods. "I'm starting to see that but there's only one person I want right now."
"We left our escorts out there and we're in here."
"I know." Lukas's hands snakes to my hips and he pulls me towards him. My lips part as my eyes go down both seeing and feeling that's he's hard.
I meet his eyes again and without hesitation, his lips go to
mine. His hands come up to frame my face as my eyes close.
My hands go to his hips as I slide my tongue into his mouth. I toy and caress and lick his tongue gently, and I moan, loving how warm and inviting his tongue felt.
I'm losing my breath, yet too deep in to make him stop.
Lukas's breath is as uneven as mine is.
His warm hands leave my face to slide down my dress, to my hips and to my thighs. He rises the dress up more, his fingers sliding into the slides of my thong.
He breaks away for a second so that his lips were just brushing against mine. "I want to fuck you." He whispered.
I shake my head. "Not here."
I nod. "Come to my apartment with me."
Someone knocks on the door.
I sigh. Looks like our moment is over.
Lukas kisses my lips and then my jaw as he slid his hands down my thighs.
There's another knock but neither of us seem to care.
We're too lost in lust to care.
But I know he has a responsibility. I gently push him away. "You
have a speech to give."
Lukas releases me but offers me his hand.
I take it and slide off of the sink. I pull my dress back down and he leads me to the door.
He unlocks it and two women are standing in the doorway, gaping at him.
Oh god. Here we go.
"Hi, Lukas." One of the love-sick women said.
He sends her a smile before leading me out of the bathroom and back to the party.
I see Ben in a crowd and he spots me. "Peyton."
I expected Lukas to drop our hands but he doesn't.
Ben walks to us, his eyes on our hands as he stops in front of us. "Um…I'm guessing this was the guy you were talking about."
I felt bad. What made it worst was the fact that Ben admitted not even twenty minutes ago that he likes me.
Before I could say anything, my dad came over to us and looked to
Lukas. "It's time, Kary." He says.
He looks down to me and kisses my forehead before releasing my hand and walking off with my dad.
My eyes go to Ben.
"I guess this is over, huh?"
I shrugged. "I'm sorry. You're a good guy, Ben."
"Yet I'm just not Lukas Kary."
I look down to my heels.
I hear Lukas's voice over the microphone trying to get everyone's attention and everyone immediately stops and turns toward him.
He looked good on the stage, looking confident
I was ashamed I didn't know the whole time what kind of charity him and dad were sponsoring. It's Kary's charity for the abused.
While he was talking on the stage, I could swear my eyes watered up because I can see that there was some experience of it in his eyes, in his past.
Those green eyes, normally filled with lust whenever I saw him, were now filled with pain. He met eyes with me as he spoke and an understanding seemed to go between us. I knew something about him now. His past may have just been as shitty as mine…..maybe worst.
