Chapter 11: About last night
Waking up next to Keifer had relaxed me completely.
Nothing else was in my head at the moment but him. He was still sleeping, his arms around me, his head buried in the crook of my neck, my leg thrown over his.
It felt good being in his hold.
I knew he was going to be asleep for maybe another hour or so.
I looked at the clock that was on the night stand and it read ten fifteen.
Keifer's phone vibrated in his pocket.
I looked at him and then reached into his pocket. I don't think he'll be upset about me answering the phone.
I looked at it.
It was Lilly.
No doubt Rae and Marcy told what happened to me.
I opened it and answered it as I put it to my ear. "Lilly?"
"Oh my god, Kristen! I heard…what happened?"
"Trent…" She burst out crying.
I listened to her for about two minutes before she said something else. "No one saved you?"
"No one knew until he was done but Keifer came to help me and now we're at this motel."
"Where is Keifer?"
"Next to me, sleeping."
"Kristen, I can't believe this happened to you. I shouldn't have let him back into the house. What can I do?"
"Stop worrying. I'm safe with Keifer."
"When are you two coming home?"
I shrugged. "I'm very comfortable being just in the motel alone with Keifer for now. But soon, I promise."
"Call me everyday if you need to talk, Kristen."
"Bye." Just as I snapped the phone shut, Keifer shifted a little and his blue eyes were suddenly on me.
I smiled at him. "Hi."
I gave him his phone and he looked at it. "Who called?"
"Lilly." I answered.
He sighed and then looked to me. "Why do you seem so….I don't know…happy today?" He asked.
I wouldn't call it happy. "I just like waking up next to you."
He smiled slightly. "And I you. Are you hungry?"
"It's a little diner somewhere around here." He got up as I moved my leg off of him.
He looked at me. "What?"
"The only shoes I have here are heels."
"Damnit, I didn't think about that part. Well, its either heels or going barefoot."
"Fine, then I'm going barefoot."
He smiled. "Sure?"
"Alright then." He gets off the bed and I go into the bathroom and look into the mirror.
I forget about the bruises on my face.
Keifer is now behind me looking at me through the mirror.
"We don't have to go, if you don't want to." He says.
I turn to him and shake my head. "No. I don't want to be trapped in here all day." I said.
He smiles but it doesn't touch his eyes. "I'm glad."
He shakes his head. "Um…nothing. Let's just go."
He walks away from me and to the door. There's still distance.
It wasn't what Trent did that was beginning to depress me, it's Keifer's reaction to it that was.
I follow him to the door and we walk out.
"It's walking distance so we don't need the car, besides, we should just get some fresh air."
We walk side-by-side, silence overwhelming us.
I kept quiet but I felt Keifer's gaze on me.
"So what did you do?" I asked.
He looked at me and then looked around at our surroundings.
"I rather not talk about it here. Let's wait until we get to the diner, okay?"
I nod and keep quiet about the subject until we walk into a small place, The floor was checkered with black and white tiles. There were small booths and chairs and tables surrounding the place. I immediately liked the vibe it gave off.
"Lets sit in the last booth." He said. I nodded and walked down to the last booth. The seat was a light teal color and the table was black.
I sat closest to the wall and Keifer sat across from me.
A pretty blonde waitress began walking towards us.
She stops in front of us and looks to Keifer. She blushes.
"Keifer?" She asked, completely oblivious towards me.
He looks up at her. "Katie."
"Hi.. I haven't seen you since high school."
He nods, sending her a fake smile.
"So, what are you up to these days?" She asked.
Keifer's eyes meet mine. "Her." He said.
The blonde looks at me. "Hi, I'm Katie."
She bite down on her lip and then hands us our menus as if just remembering why she was here in the first place.
"I'll check with the two of you in a few minutes." She walked away from us.
My eyes met his.
"Is she on the list?"
He shook his head. "No. She was treated like shit in high school so I befriended her because I felt sorry for her. She developed a crush on me and I told her I didn't see her in that way. She got mad and stopped talking to me."
"Whoa." I suddenly felt bad with the rude question.
He sighed. "Look, Kristen, I've been with a lot of girls, but every girl that walks up to us is not someone I fucked. Okay?"
I stared at him.
I had a feeling he was hiding something, but I didn't know what.
"Okay." I whispered.
He looked down to his menu. "What are you having?" He asked, changing the subject.
I looked down at my menu.
After a few seconds, I decided on the pancakes and sausage.
"Are you in pain?" He asked.
I met his blue eyes and shook my head.
There was still a slight ache but it wasn't too bad.
"Don't downplay it."
"I'm not downplaying it."
He stared at me, giving me a doubtful look.
I heard his phone vibrate. He grabbed it out of his pocket and then flipped it open. "Morgan…………I'm at Jim's diner…….I know……Kristen's with me. She can hear the conversation…….hurry because we don't plan on staying too long……..okay." He shut his phone off and placed it on he table.
"What was that about?"
"Morgan. We have to talk about what happened last night."
My cheeks grew hot. I didn't want to talk about that.
He shook his head. "No. Me and him have to talk about what I did to Trent last night. What Trent did to you is a conversation we're going to have by ourselves soon."
I nodded and watched as the waitress come back.
Keifer gave her both of our orders and then she walked away.
I looked at him at the same time he looked at me. "I feel…like we're distant." I admitted.
He nodded. "Me too."
"I don't know what to do about it." I said.
He shakes his head. "We both know why. It's not your fault, Kristen."
"I know." I whispered.
"I love you, okay? I will never let some shit like that happen to you again. And if there is someone who does hurt you again, this time, I'm killing them." He said. His eyes locked on mine.
"Did you….kill Trent?"
He shook his head. "No, but believe me, I wanted to."
"I'm glad you didn't. You don't deserve to go to jail because of him." I said.
He nodded. "Right. That's the only reason….the only fucking reason I didn't kill him last night."
"So what did you do?"
Just as he was about to answer, I saw Morgan enter the diner.
He met eyes with me immediately and walked over to us.
He stared down at me as he got to our table. "Are you okay?" He asked.
I nodded. "Your girlfriend comforted me. You're a lucky guy."
He smiled. "Don't I know it. Me and Keifer have to talk about the little bitch. Will it bother you?"
I pursed my lips.
Yes…..but hey, they needed to talk, why not let them?
"No, its okay."
I scooted over so Morgan could sit down.
He sighed and placed his phone onto the table. "So, I don't know what's going to happen from here on out." He said.
"I don't know either."
"What happened?" I asked.
Morgan looked at me and then to Keifer. "You didn't tell her?"
"I was about to before you walked in."
Morgan looked to me. "Your boyfriend beat the shit out of Trent including breaking his nose and knocking out his teeth. And he shot him in both feet and in the dick."
My eyes grew wide as I looked to Keifer. "What?"
Morgan smiled. "Made me proud. I got in good hit too."
"What, after I left?" Keifer asked.
"Yeah….but I….think I gave him amnesia or some shit. He doesn't remember anything that happened."
"Nothing?" He asked.
Morgan shook his head. "Nothing. He doesn't remember who I am. He doesn't remember who you are. The rape, he doesn't remember. He doesn't even remember who shot off his dick."
"Off?" I asked.
Morgan nodded. "Off."
Keifer sat back as the food was served.
I grabbed my orange juice and took a few sips, trying to take this all in.
The waitress smiled at Keifer before walking off.
Keifer stared at Morgan without giving the waitress a glance. "So now what?"
"They found drugs on him and in his system. He's going to prison regardless."
"Yeah, for five fucking years tops."
"Fine then, dick shooter, you tell them what really happened and you go to jail along with him." Morgan said.
I looked at Keifer and he sighed. "Fine."
"Look, when he gets out of jail, he's not going to remember you, or her. You'll be safer without him knowing either one of you."
"It doesn't seem real." I said.
Morgan looked at me. "I know. I kind of felt like he was acting….but I don't know."
"What did you do?" Keifer asked.
"I banged his head against a table, making both his head and the table fucking crack."
Keifer raised his eyebrow. "Why?"
"For you, and the other amount of drugs I gave him that he lost, That was seventy grand worth."
"Since when do you sale?" Keifer asked.
"Selling for my dad, believe it or not."
Keifer shrugged. "Alright. So he's oblivious to me and Kristen's existence?"
Morgan nodded. "He's got nothing on you if he doesn't know you."
"They've got nothing to charge anyone with. And now you have a dickless cousin who can't walk and is going to jail and doesn't even know who you are."
"I don't know. I still feel like there's something suspicious about the whole thing. I don't think its over."
I look at him and he was purposely not looking at me. He told me it was over.
Not he's not so sure.
"Just don't think about it. He's going to suffer. Enjoy that fact," He stood up. "Well, I got to get home to Ginny. I'll see you guys on July fourth. We have to get together."
"Yeah, aren't you all gong to that carnival thing to see the fireworks?"
He nodded. "Um…I think Rylie, Damon, me, Ginny, your sister, Fae, and Gabby and Marcy is coming. You know, the regulars."
"We'll be there on Friday then."
Morgan nodded. "Cool." He waved me, bye and walked off and out of the diner.
I looked at Keifer and he looks relieved, but not entirely.
"Nothing. I'm just…glad its over. That's all."
"You don't think it is, though."
"I'm going to assume it is so I don't become paranoid."
I reach over and grab his hand. "Thank you."
He smiles. "Your welcome. Now lets finish this breakfast and then go see my mother. She's so damn worried about you."
