Chapter 5: Will
I knocked on the door and waited for my half brother to answer it. I don't know how he'll react once we he sees me.
The door opens and Danny locks eyes with me. "The hell are you doing here?"
"I need to talk to you." I walked in the house and turned to look at him.
Danny sighed and shut the door. "You look like shit. Make it quick."
"First off, I want to thank you for saving me."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Skip to the point."
I narrowed my eyes at him. Danny always resented me and I wanted to know why.
"What did I do wrong?" I asked.
Danny smirked. "Oh you did a hell of a lot wrong. The only reason I saved you is because I knew my mom would have wanted me to. And yours also. You did deserve what you got."
Wow. Is that really how he felt?
I turned and lifted my shirt to show him the non-fading whips on my back. "I deserved that?" I asked.
"Yeah, I think you did."
I pulled my shirt down and turned back to him.
"You know how Tomas is about secrets and you should have known he'd go ape shit once he found out what you told your grandfather."
"He had a right to know. It was his daughter after all….my mother. She died and nobody gave a shit…nobody." I said.
Danny just stood there and watched me.
I was looking down at the floor. My thoughts all screwed up.
"So what's your plan?" He asked.
I shrugged. "I don't know yet." I said.
"Not that I give a damn, really, but don't do anything stupid. Okay? I don't want to come save you out of another hole." He said.
"You're a dick."
"I'm not the one who sold out Tomas's secret. That was you and for now on, I don't give a shit about what happens to you, Kat."
"You don't have to. I can take care of myself now."
He nodded. "I bet that you think you can but the sad reality is that you won't be able to. Once Tomas and Harper find out you're alive, you're going back in that hole."
"Oh and once they figure out you're the one who dug me out in the first place, where do you think you're going?"
Danny stayed quiet.
His expression of anger changed to something else. Regret.
"I never did it for you, Kat."
"They don't care about that. Think about it, you helped me escape, they wanted me to suffer and you helped me. You're as dead as I am."
Danny looked to the floor but then walked over and grabbed his phone from off the coffee table and dialed a number.
"Who are you calling?"
He didn't answer me. "Will, I need you over here and bring the equipment."
There was a pause and he sighed. "Anything you can. Get over here, now."
He snapped his phone shut and sighed. "I never thought about that shit." He said and paced around the room.
He leaned against the back of the couch.
"I never wanted you to get in trouble."
"Them finding out, I'm in more than trouble."
Someone knocked on the door and Danny went to open it. "Thanks, man." He said and grabbed a big olive green bag from someone and placed it on the couch.
A guy, looked to be around my age walked in the house. He had dark hair, bluish greenish eyes, pale skin and a muscular figure.
He looked at me at the same time my eyes caught his.
"Whose she?" He asked as he looked to Danny.
"My half sister."
"You didn't tell me you had one."
"She doesn't act much like one." Danny said as he glared at me. I looked down at my shoes.
But looked up as the guy walked to me and held out his hand. I looked up at him.
He smiled. "I'm Will."
"You were just on the phone with Danny. You got here fast."
"I live across the street from him. What's your name?"
"Kat." I said shaking his hand. He looked down and noticed the scar on my wrist and I snatched my hand away and pulled my sleeve down and cleared my throat. Then I looked over at Danny. "I wanna know where they are." I said.
"How the hell am I supposed to know?" Danny asked as he placed the bag in his lap.
"Because Tomas lets you know where he is in case you need more money. He always tells you."
"Actually, smart ass, I don't know where he is right now. Only Harper."
My blood boiled at the mention of his name.
"Where is he?" I asked.
Danny didn't say anything as he unzipped the bag and pulled out a black pistol.
I looked to Will and then back to Danny. "Guns?"
"He told me he'd need them one day." Will said and then looked to me.
"I need a gun."
"No." Danny got to his feet and placed the bag on the table. "You can't kill them. What the hell is your problem?"
"You weren't there, Danny. You don't know what Harper did to me!"
"And I don't give a fuck either."
"Whoa…whoa." Will went up to Danny and held him back just as Danny was walking towards me.
"Calm down." Will said and then looked to me. "You need a gun?"
"What for?" He asked.
I shook my head. "I can't say." I said.
He narrowed his eyes. "How old are you?"
"Sixteen but that's beside the point."
"Please…please…just give me the gun and I swear I'll pay you back."
Will stared at me. "You need it for the same reason Danny needs it?"
"No." Danny shook his head. "I want them for protection, she wants them for revenge."
"Revenge." Will said as if it's a weird word.
"Some stupid shit happened to her a month ago and now she's all 'Beatrix Kiddo' about it." He glared at me.
I said nothing and stood there quietly. "You know what, forget about it." I walked to the door, forced it open and slammed it shut.
I sighed as I leaned against the door and walked off the stairs.
I heard the door open behind me and I turned to see Will walking out.
I stared at him as he descended the stairs.
I watched him as he stopped beside me. "Come with me." He said and then walked through the grass onto the street. Hesitantly, I followed him.
"Where are we going?" I asked.
I stopped walking immediately and froze in the street. "What?"
"I want to give you something."
I stared at him. "Just…bring whatever it is you need to show me out here." I said.
"It'll only take a minute, can you please come with me?" He asked.
I sighed and looked both ways before crossing over with him to get to his house.
He opened the door and the room was slowly getting dark.
"Close the door." He said.
I did as he said and followed him across the wooden floorboards. "Why are we here?" I asked.
He came over to be with something in his hand.
"Hold out your hand." He said.
I did as he said. And he placed cold metal in my hand.
"What's this?" I asked.
I looked up at his face. "You're giving this to me?"
"Yeah. Whatever happened to you, you seem to be really passionate about getting revenge on it and I can't stop you."
"If only you knew."
"Maybe someday you'll tell me?" He said. His breathing was uneven and mine was too.
"Maybe." I said and looked down at the gun. Wow, I didn't even know this guy and he just gave me a…. "Why are you helping me?" I asked.
He shrugged. "You're my best friend's sister. I help anyone who needs it but I should just ask you…."
"What is it?"
"Whatever it is you're planning to do, you could go to jail for it."
I shrugged. "I'm willing to take that risk."
"And keep running from the law…..at your age?"
I shrugged. "Whatever happens…happens." I said.
He stared at me and nodded once. "You're very brave." He said.
I was about to put the gun in my pocket but he stopped me. "Turn on the safety." He said.
He chuckled. "If you don't know how to do it, you shouldn't be handling guns."
"I need it, though." I said.
He grabbed it from me. "I don't know."
"You have no clue what happened to me. No clue and maybe I might sound insane and naïve but…I have to do this. I just have to." I said.
I didn't want him to take this opportunity from me.
He turned on the safety and handed the gun to me. I put it into my pants and pulled my shirt down.
"I'll be on my way now and thank you…for this."
He stared at me and nodded. "It was nice meeting you, Kat."
I nodded. "You too."
I made my way to the door and placed my hand on the knob.
I turned to look at him and he smiled.
I smiled back, the first time I gave a genuine smile in a while. I opened the door and walked into his yard.
I made it on the street.
"Kat!" Will called.
I turned to look at him.
"I'm coming with you."
