"You look beautiful" Eva put the last pin in my hair and turned me around "you look like a princess"
"Thank you" she had chosen one of my best gowns for tonight. She insisted that I had to look my best so Mr. Harris would be pleased, knowing the fortune he had paid for me I would think he was already pleased with the way I looked "Are we the only ones having supper?"
"No, of course not. That wouldn't be proper" it was a little too late to worry about that now. I lived in his house "His daughter will be joining you both"
"He has a daughter?" God, I didn't know anything about him "I wasn't aware of that"
"Yes, he has a daughter" Eva motioned me to turn around "she is a little older than you and very shy. Her father has tried to marry her off, but she has refused all suitors"
"How do you know all these?" Eva was always informed "we just got here"
"Servants talk" she smiled at me "I'll tell you everything I learned when you retire tonight"
I nodded and walked downstairs. Everything is this house screamed money and power, it was intimidating, I was afraid to touch anything.
I walked into the waiting room and stopped when I saw a woman sitting on one of the couches reading a book, she was very pretty. She had black hair and green eyes, and for what I could tell was dressed in the latest fashion, her hair was pulled up in an elegant knot. She must have felt me staring because she looked up.
"Hello" she stood up and smiled at me "I'm Rose and you must be Arabella"
"Yes. I'm very pleased to meet you Rose" she seem nice.
"Likewise" she looked at me from head to toe and her smile widened "Father was right, you are very beautiful"
"Thank you, so are you" she sat down and patted the couch beside her, I sat down gracefully "I have to admit I didn't know of your existence until earlier today"
"That's not suprising, my father is a very private man" but not tell anyone about his daughter "he didn't tell me about you until yesterday. I didn't even know he wanted to marry again"
"And are you ok with this?"
"It doesn't matter what I think, he will do as he pleases, like he always does. Nobody in this house cares about my opinion"
"Well, I would really want to know what you think"
"Is better if I don't say anything" she shook her head "I don't want to upset you"
"You won't upset me, please"
"I think he won't make you happy" she gave me a sad smile "he will treat you like you are his possession and throw you aside when he tires of you"
My eyes widened, I hadn't expected that answer and the worst part was that I could tell she wasn't trying to be mean, she actually believed what she was saying. I stood up, gave her a shaky smile and walked out of the house.
It wasn't completely dark yet, but I could tell it wouldn't be long now. There was a stone path that led away from the house and I followed it. My mind was in chaos, I wanted to go home. I kept walking without a destination in mind, I finally stopped when I noticed I had wondered too far away from the house, I had reached the stables.
I walked around them and stopped dead in my tracks, behind the stables there was a big tank filled with water and there was a half-naked man running a soaked rag over his face, neck, arms and chest. I must have made some kind of noise because he turned around and I found myself looking into the greenest eyes I'd ever seen.
