Chapter Nine

"Hello, Meg? It's Carolyn."

"Carolyn… where are you? Are you all right?"

"Yes, I'm fine. I'm at the Waldorf... Where Sam and Dale are staying."

"At the Waldorf… what happened? Should I ask? We were worried about you."

"I'm sorry, I should have called. Nothing happened really. We went to the bridge, and then we, you know, all had something to eat. It was very late so I stayed here instead of making the trip and disturbing you guys in the middle of the night."

"Uh huh. You went to see the bridge and then you got something to eat. And then what? You don't have to say anything of you don't want to."

"No, there's nothing to say, we came back here and later… some other people came over and that's pretty much it."

Silence on the other end of the phone.

"Megan? You there?"

"Yes, I'm here. John is out right now so we can talk. I mean, I can talk. Did I ever tell you about the night I went home with two guys I met at the London Bar?"

"Well, Jean mentioned that one night you sort of disappeared with two guys she didn't know, but I don't know anymore about it than that."

"Yeah, it was after I left Jimmy and before I met John. We were all at the London, you know drinking and having a good time. We met these two guys and I danced with each of them a few times. Then they asked me to go home with them. And I did."

"You mean you went to their place? Why?"

"I don't know why. Why not? They were good looking and seemed safe enough. We went to their apartment and had some more drinks and danced some more…"

"You danced some more… and then what?"

"Well, we started kissing and stuff…"

"Wait, who started kissing? You and which one?"

"Me and both of them, actually."

"You were kissing both of them?"

"Yeah, and then one thing led to another…"

"Megan… are you serious?"

"Yes, I'm serious."

"Well, what happened?"

"Well, think about it. What can happen with one girl and two guys? Think of all the ways that could work out, ok? That's pretty much what happened."

"Oh my God, Megan, I can't believe this."

"It's true. I had a good old time. And so did they."

"But, weren't you scared?"

"A little, at first. But I was pretty sure they were ok. They weren't maniacs or anything."

"Yes, but, Megan, my god, you were taking an awful chance. I mean, they could have raped you or who knows what."

"They couldn't rape me, I was a willing participant. But, anyway, why do you think I'm telling you this?"

"I don't know," Carolyn lies. "Why are you telling me this?"

"Well, because if anything happened last night I want you to know you can talk to me about it."

"Nothing happened, Megan." Carolyn groaning inwardly: I am such a bad liar.

"You know, Carolyn, of all us sisters, you and Ann were always the most reserved about sex. I've hardly ever even seen you flirt with anyone, except Bill. Ann I think really isn't all that interested in sex, but you… I know what fires burn in you. I've always thought that you had to be so reserved because you were just barely under control. I know you and Bill have always had a very, uh, active sex life. And I know you and him have not been getting along for sometime now and that for whatever reasons you have been angry with him for a long time. Which made me think that maybe, you know, maybe you were up for something… new."

Carolyn is silent. Is that why I did this? Because I'm mad at Bill? Am I simply trying to hurt him? That may be part of it, but not all. There's more to it than that.

Tess calls in from the other room that breakfast is here. Carolyn is reminded again where she is. And why.

"Meg, I have to go. I heard what you said and I appreciate it. We'll talk later, ok? I'll call you in a little while."

"Ok, Carolyn. Should I expect you sometime today?"

"Yes, I think so. But I'll call you, ok?"

"Ok. Be careful. I love you, Carolyn."

"I love you too, Megan. Bye. Thanks."
